Children's programming environment acceptance: extending the boundary conditions to programming competition, computational thinking, and programming modality

While numerous studies have highlighted the potential benefits of programming environment (PE) use for children's learning, the boundary conditions of children's PE acceptance within the programming education context are less clear. This study fills this gap in the literature by investigating the critical determinants of children's PE use intention and extending the boundary conditions to programming competition, computational thinking, and programming modality. A total of 1527 primary students participated in this study. Using structural equation modelling (SEM) analyses, the measurement model was validated, and the configural, metric and scalar invariance of the measurement model was established. The structural model was also confirmed, with most of the hypothesized relationships were supported. Multigroup SEM analyses were conducted to compare structural path coefficient differences across different personal moderators (i.e., gender, grade, and experience), environmental moderators (i.e., both parents' education level), and PE use-relevant moderators (i.e., programming competition, computational thinking, and programming modality). The results revealed significant path differences in six group comparisons, with most of the path differences associated with perceived self-efficacy and perceived ease of use. It should be noted that no significant path differences were identified for the gender and programming competition group comparisons. This work serves as a pioneer study of a comprehensive understanding of the determinants and moderators of children's PE use intention. The findings offer important theoretical implications through accommodating essential constructs within a PE acceptance framework and recommending effective strategies to improve primary students' PE acceptance for programming learning in primary education.

This paper describes the design and the implementation of OOPE, the graphical programming environment of the prototype version of O₂, an object-oriented database system. One of the distinguishing features of this environment is that it mixes the functionalities of programming environments, of both databases and programming languages. Thus, it facilitates and fastens not only the schema design, but also the development of application programs. Another interesting characteristic is that it is being developed using as much as possible the functionalities provided by the O₂ system, namely the programming language, the database and the graphics functionalities. © Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg 1992.

Visual block-based programming is useful for various users such as novice programmers because it provides easy operations and improves the readability of programs. Also, in programming education, it is known to be effective to initially present basic language features and then gradually make more advanced features available. However, the cost of implementing such visual block-based languages remains a challenge. In this paper, we present a programming environment for providing visual block-based domain-specific languages (visual DSLs) that are translatable into various programming languages. In our environment, programs are built by combining visual blocks expressed in a natural language. Blocks represent program elements such as operations and variables. Tips represent snippets, and macro blocks represent procedures. Using Tips and macros make code more abstract, and reduce the number of blocks in code. Visual DSLs can be a front-end for various languages. It can be easily restricted and extended by adding and deleting blocks. We applied our programming environment to Processing, an educational programming language for media art. We show that the environment is useful for novice programmers who learn basic concepts of programming and the features of Processing. (C) 2015 The Authors. Published by Elsevier B.V. Some of the critical hurdles for the widespread adoption of accelerators in high performance computing are portability and programming difficulty. To be an effective HPC p latform, these systems need a high level software development environment to facilitate the porting and development of applications, so they can be portable and run efficiently on either accelerators or CPUs. In this paper we present a high level parallel programming environment for accelerator-based systems, which consists of tightly coupled compilers, tools, and libraries that can interoperate and hide the complexity of the system. Ease of use is possible with compilers making it feasible for users to write applications in Fortran, C, or C++ with OpenACC directives, tools to help users port, debug, and optimize for both accelerators and conventional multi-core CPUs, and with auto-tuned scientific libraries.

A fuzzy logic programming environment for real-time control

Expert systems based on fuzzy logic inferencing have been shown to be effective in controlling complex processes. The experiences of human operators are naturally captured as linguistic fuzzy control rules. This paper describes a programming environment being developed to facilitate the implementation of fuzzy control systems that allow a user to easily describe a set of fuzzy rules, graphically edit the fuzzy variable definitions, and verify the rules through simulation. In an actual control system, the rules will reside in and be processed by a special-purpose chip for fuzzy logic inferencing. An object-oriented approach to the programming environment naturally models this hardware architecture. Each set of rules is associated with a chip object simulated in software. The content of the chip object is changed as the rules are modified. When the simulation results are satisfactory, the content of the simulated chip can be copied directly into the hardware chip for real-time applications. A complex controller that involves multiple domains of expertise can be developed by first focusing on component chip objects and then interconnecting the components. The ability to translate linguistic rules into practical implementations is a unique and useful feature of this environment. © 1988.

Novice programmers often struggle with code understanding and debugging. Live programming environments visualize the runtime values of a program each time it is modified to provide immediate feedback, which help with tracing the program execution. This paper presents the use of a Live programming tool in a CS1 course to better understand the impact of Live programming on novices' learning metrics and their perceptions of the tool. We conducted a within-subjects study at a large public university in a CS1 course in Python (N=237) where students completed tasks in a lab setting, in some cases with a Live programming environment, and in some cases without. Through post-lab surveys and open-ended feedback, we measured how well students understood the material and how students perceived the programming environment. To understand the impact of Live programming, we compared the collected data for students who used Live programming with the data for students who did not. We found that while learning outcomes were the same regardless of whether Live programming was used or not, students who used the Live programming tool completed some code tracing tasks faster. Furthermore, students liked the Live programming environment more, and rated it as more helpful for their learning.

To make industrial control applications, many control flow diagrams are drawn using the domain graphic symbols. There are some well-known standards of control flow diagram, for example, IEC61131-3 programming languages for PLC, and ISA/SAMA functional diagram for process control. Although the integrated control systems that may cover both PLC and process control domains were launched, they had a typical problem that the most of programming environment were not integrated for each domain. For example, most of process control engineers have strong rejection reaction to IEC61131-3 programming. The authors solved this problem practically, studying the extensible custom symbol and the extended control flow diagram, and applying them to IIEC61131-3 programming environment for the true integration.

Compared with the traditional Matlab programming environment, the main features of the system are that it does not need to deploy any development environment locally, and users can write and run Matlab code through the browser of mobile phone, tablet, computer;at the same time, the system also supports standard input, parameter input, and image output. Through the research and testing of the system, the programming environment has strong feasibility, excellent user experience, good concurrency and stability.

Event-based programming has been studied little, yet recent work suggests that language paradigm can predict programming strategies and performance. A contextual inquiry of four expert programmers using the Alice 3D programming environment was performed in order to discover how event-based programming strategies might be supported in programming environments. Various programming, testing, and debugging breakdowns were extracted from observations and possible programming environment tools are suggested as aids to avoid these breakdowns. Future analyses and studies are described.
