In this paper, we present a way of expressing massively parallel algorithms associated with a programming environment for networks of processors with local memory;the aim is to provide a programming method that is independent of the network topology, and that leads to an efficient implementation for communications. Then, we illustrate these concepts using as an example a scientific algorithm: Choleski's method for a parallel factorization of sparse matrices into blocks. This work gives rise to software for a *** multiprocessor computer.

AbstractDOSE is unique among structure editor generatiors in its interpretive approach. This approach leads to very fast turn‐around time for changes and provides multi‐language facilities for no aditional effort or cost. The evolution support environment (ESE) system, which provides a framework for capturing and making available semantic information about software components of an evolving software system, is described. The goal in the design of the ESE system was to provide integrated support for management of software architecture configuration, life-cycle configuration, and version control. Software architecture configuration management allows tracking of interconnections among software components that make up a system. Life-cycle management allows traceability among specifications, design, code, and test cases during software development. Adding version control allows specific versions of software objects and their associated objects, such as specifications and test cases, to be retrieved. The authors\' experience with the use of the system is discussed.

A General User-Oriented Framework for Holonomic Redundancy Resolution in Robotic Manipulators Using Task Augmentation

Redundant robotic manipulators under kinematic control may exhibit unpredictable behaviors at the joint level. When the end effector describes a closed trajectory, the joint angles may not return to their initial values. Likewise, final configuration in the joint space may depend on the trajectory that is followed by the end effector. In this paper, a complete parameterization of holonomic redundancy resolution techniques that avoid these problems is proposed. The flexibility of the proposed approach is discussed. In particular, it is shown that the selection of the redundancy resolution criterion is totally decoupled from the implementation of a closed-loop inverse kinematics (CLIK) algorithm. Any user-defined redundancy resolution criterion can, thus, be enforced. Potentialities of this new methodology are experimentally verified on an industrial robot in a case study where functional redundancy occurs and is applied in simulation on a 7-degree-of-freedom (7-DOF) anthropomorphic manipulator.

Designing planning and control interfaces to support user collaboration with flying robots

Robots are becoming increasingly prevalent and are already providing assistance in a variety of activities, ranging from space exploration to domestic housework. Recent advances in the design of sensors, motors, and microelectromechanical systems have enabled the development of a new class of small aerial robots. These free-flying robots hold great promise in assisting humans by acting as mobile sensor platforms to collect data in areas that are difficult to access or infeasible to instrument. In this work, we explored the design of interfaces that support users in working with free-flying robots to accomplish tasks including inventory logistics and management, environmental data collection, and visual inspection. Extending prior work in control interfaces for ground robots, we conducted a formative study in order to identify key design requirements for free-flyer interfaces. We designed several realistic tasks for use in evaluating human-robot interaction within the context of indoor free-flyer operation. We implemented three prototype interfaces that each provide varying degrees of support in enabling remote users to work with a flying robot to plan, communicate goals, accomplish tasks, and respond to changes in a dynamic environment. An experimental evaluation of each interface found that the interface designed to support collaborative planning and replanning using an interactive timeline and three-dimensional spatial waypoints significantly improved users' efficiency in accomplishing tasks, their ability to intervene in response to spontaneous changes in task demands, and their ratings of the robot as a teammate compared to interfaces that support low-level teleoperation or waypoint-based supervisory control. Our results demonstrate the utility of a data-driven design process and show the need for free-flyer interfaces to consider planning phases in addition to task execution. The Interface Description Language (IDL) is a notation for describing the characteristics of data structures passed among collections of cooperating processes in a programming environment. In this paper we discuss a mapping from IDL to C data structures and macro definitions that supports the full language and is type safe and runtime efficient, but is not particularly compile-time efficient nor easy to use. This paper introduces the concept of an integrated instrumentation environment (IIE) for multiprocessors. The primary objective of such an environment is to assist the user in the process of experimentation. The emphasis in an IIE is on experiment management (including stimulus generation, monitoring, data collection and analysis), rather than on techniques for program development as in conventional programming environments. We believe the functionality of the two environments should eventually be provided in one comprehensive environment.

This workshop offers hands-on experience with a suite of interactive programming environments for teachers and students, each of them cloud-based and free. The first tool is CS50 Sandbox, via which teachers create temporary programming environments quickly and share copies of those sandboxes with students. The second tool is CS50 Lab, via which teachers can create step-by-step programming lessons, providing incremental feedback at each step, enabling students to progress from an empty file (or starter code) to working code, with hints and feedback along the way. And the third tool is CS50 IDE, via which teachers can provide students with their own cloud-based Linux environment. Each of these environments offers students a built-in file browser and code editor, along with a terminal window with shell access to their very own container. The IDE additionally provides an interactive, graphical debugger. Each tool enables students to write programs in any language for which a compiler or interpreter can be installed in the underlying container, including Java and Python. Not only will we demonstrate each tool, we'll discuss lessons learned from having deployed these tools in CS50 at Harvard to hundreds of students on campus and thousands of students online. We'll compare and contrast with commercial and open-source tools. And we'll discuss challenges encountered and best practices adopted.

The superstructure toward open bioinformatics grid

The grid design strongly depends on not only a network infrastructure but also a superstructure, that is, a social structure of virtual organizations where people trust each other, share resources and work together. Open Biomformatics Grid (OBIGrid) is a grid aimed at building a cooperative bioinformatics environment for computer sicentists and biologists. In October 2003, OBIGrid consisted of 293 nodes with 492 CPUs provided by 27 sites at Universities, laboratories and other enterprises, connected by a virtual private network over the Internet. So many organizations have participated because OBIGrid has been conscious of constructing a superstructure on a grid as well as a grid infrastructure. For the benefit of OBIGrid participants, we have developed a series of life science application services: an open bioinformatics environment (OBIEnv), a scalable genome database (OBISgd), a genome annotation system (OBITco), a biochemical network simulator (OBIYagns), and to name a few.

Pencil Code improves learners' computational thinking and computer learning attitude

In the current implementation of K-12 education, computational thinking is considered an important part of developing students' key abilities. Many studies have shown that computational thinking can be improved by programming, for example, using Scratch, App Inventor, and Python. However, different programming tools have different forms of programming that affect the development of learners' computational thinking. This study aimed to test the effects of different programming tools with the same teaching content on learners' computational thinking and computer learning attitude in real classroom teaching. Ninety-nine participants took part in an eight-week teaching intervention in the Visual Basic (text-based) and Pencil Code (block-based) programming environments. T tests showed that students learning in a mixed text-based and block-based Pencil Code programming environment not only had significantly improved computational thinking but also became more self-confident and enjoyed learning programming. Furthermore, our interviews after the eight-week teaching intervention found that students showed more communication and interaction behaviors learning with Pencil Code.
