Practical domain-specific debuggers using the Moldable Debugger framework

Understanding the run-time behavior of software systems can be a challenging activity. Debuggers are an essential category of tools used for this purpose as they give developers direct access to the running systems. Nevertheless, traditional debuggers rely on generic mechanisms to introspect and interact with the running systems, while developers reason about and formulate domain-specific questions using concepts and abstractions from their application domains. This mismatch creates an abstraction gap between the debugging needs and the debugging support leading to an inefficient and error-prone debugging effort, as developers need to recover concrete domain concepts using generic mechanisms. To reduce this gap, and increase the efficiency of the debugging process, we propose a framework for developing domain-specific debuggers, called the Moldable Debugger, that enables debugging at the level of the application domain. The Moldable Debugger is adapted to a domain by creating and combining domain-specific debugging operations with domain-specific debugging views, and adapts itself to a domain by selecting, at run time, appropriate debugging operations and views. To ensure the proposed model has practical applicability (i.e., can be used in practice to build real debuggers), we discuss, from both a performance and usability point of view, three implementation strategies. We further motivate the need for domain-specific debugging, identify a set of key requirements and show how our approach improves debugging by adapting the debugger to several domains. Observation is important when we teach programming. It can help identify students that struggle, concepts that are not clearly presented during lectures, poor assignments, etc. However, as development tools become more widely available or courses move off-campus and online, we lose our ability to naturally observe students. Online programming environments provide an opportunity to record how students solve assignments and the data recorded allows for in-depth analysis. For example, file activities, mouse movements, text-selections, and text caret movements provide a lot of information on when a programmer collects information and what task is currently worked on. We developed CSQUIZ to allow us to observe students on our online courses through data analysis. Based on our experience with the tool in a course, we find recorded sessions a sufficient replacement for natural observations.

Analyzing how software engineers use the Integrated Development Environment (IDE) is essential to better understanding how engineers carry out their daily tasks. SPOTTER is a code search engine for the Pharo programming language. Since its inception, SPOTTER has been rapidly and broadly adopted within the Pharo community. However, little is known about how practitioners employ SPOTTER to search and navigate within the Pharo code base. This paper evaluates how software engineers use SPOTTER in practice. To achieve this, we remotely gather user actions called events. These events are then visually rendered using an adequate navigation tool chain. Sequences of events are represented using a visual alphabet. We found a number of usage patterns and identified underused SPOTTER features. Such findings are essential for improving SPOTTER.

The term Projectional editor is commonly used for tools that can work directly with the program's abstract syntax tree. They are able to provide different views of the program, according to the specific editor used. The ability to look at the program from multiple views is often requested as a mean to simplify program comprehension. During their evolution, the Integrated Development environments were equipped with tools that provide such possibilities. Many of them already work with the parsed abstract syntax tree of the code and thus can be considered for projections. In this paper we review projections available in 6 widely used IDEs. The review categorizes existing projections and shows that significant number of IDE tools depend on the knowledge of program structure, but also that data from other integrated tools are used to enhance the projections.

The past decade's computing revolution has delivered parallel hardware to the masses. However, the ability to exploit its capabilities and ignite scientific breakthrough at a proportionate level remains a challenge due to the lack of parallel programming expertise. Although different solutions have been proposed to facilitate harvesting the seeds of parallel computing, most target seasoned programmers and ignore the special nature of a target audience like domain experts. This paper addresses the challenge of realizing a programming abstraction and implementing an integrated development framework for this audience. We present GLAF - a grid-based language and auto-parallelizing, auto-tuning framework. Its key elements are its intuitive visual programming interface, which attempts to render expressing and validating an algorithm easier for domain experts, and its ability to automatically generate efficient serial and parallel Fortran and C code, including potentially beneficial code modifications (e.g., with respect to data layout). We find that the above features assist novice programmers to avoid common programming pitfalls and provide fast implementations.

A picture tells a thousand words. We all know that. Then why are our development tools showing mainly text with so much obstinacy? Even when visualizations do make it into our tools, they typically do not make it past the periphery. Something is deeply wrong. We argue that visualizations must become pervasive in software development, and to accommodate this goal, the integrated development environments must change significantly.

Most programming environments are shipped with accurate memory profilers. Although efficient in their analyses, memory profilers traditionally output textual listing reports, thus reducing the memory profile exploration as a set of textual pattern-matching operations. Memory blueprint visually reports the memory consumption of a program execution. A number of simple visual cues are provided to identify direct and indirect object production sites, key ingredients to efficiently address memory issues. Scalability is addressed by restricting the scope of interest both in the call graph and the considered classes. Memory blueprint has been implemented in the Pharo programming language, and is available under the MIT license.

User interfaces (UIs) are advancing in every direction. The usage of touch screen devices and adaptation their UIs lives its boom. However integrated development environments (IDEs) that are used to develop the same UIs are oversleeping the time. They are directed to developing usable software, but forgot to be usable by themselves. Our goal is to design a new way of user interaction for common IDEs with the help of touch. The target group are hybrid devices formed by a physical keyboard and either an integrated, or separate, touch screen display. In this paper we describe a set of general purpose and domain-specific gestures which represents a language for working with a touch-driven IDE and provide a method their design. We performed two studies with developers from industry and university and developed a prototype of a gesture-driven IDE to evaluate the usability of the presented approach.

Data scientists often conduct exploratory data analysis in scripting environments with a read-eval-print loop (REPL), like R, IPython or MATLAB. This user experience requires diligent management of execution and generates lengthy histories of unwanted command responses. This paper explores the alternative of live programming, a user experience in which the user's edits immediately and automatically update the script results-a "ripple" effect familiar from spreadsheets. Which user experience provides better support for exploratory data analysis, REPL or ripple? We conducted a controlled lab study with 15 data-experienced professionals. Each participant explored four datasets, two in each experience. The REPL sessions left histories with both significantly more data results and significantly more errors than the live sessions. However, both experiences produced comparable numbers of data results that participants self-rated as insightful. Participants largely preferred the live experience for its responsiveness and ability to keep the script content clean, but missed the visible history that a REPL provides.
