Plugging in and into code bubbles: the code bubbles architecture

Code Bubbles is an attempt to redefine the user interface for an integrated programming environment. As it represents a whole new user interface, implementing it as a plug-in is inherently difficult. We get around this difficulty by combining two different plug-in architectures, a standard one based on registrations and callbacks and a message-based one that puts the plug-in at arm's length and defines a narrower two-way interface. This paper describes both how we have implemented Code Bubbles as a plug-in to Eclipse and how Code Bubbles itself is implemented as a set of plug-ins representing the different aspects of the environment, using both traditional and message-based plug-in architectures as appropriate. It also shows how the resultant architecture is flexible enough to support collaboration, different back ends, and a cloud-based environment. Copyright (c) 2013 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.

THIS ARTICLE PRESENTS A NEW TOOL CHAIN THAT MAPS A DOMAIN-SPECIFIC PACKET-PROCESSING LANGUAGE CALLED PX TO HIGH-PERFORMANCE RECONFIGURABLE-COMPUTING ARCHITECTURES BASED ON FPGA TECHNOLOGY. PX IS A DECLARATIVE LANGUAGE WITH OBJECT-ORIENTED SEMANTICS. A CUSTOMIZED COMPUTING ARCHITECTURE IS GENERATED TO MATCH THE EXACT REQUIREMENTS EXPRESSED IN THE PX DESCRIPTION. THIS ARCHITECTURE IS DYNAMICALLY PROGRAMMABLE VIA CUSTOM FIRMWARE UPDATES WHEN THE PACKET-PROCESSING SYSTEM IS IN OPERATION.

The first in a three-part series appearing in IEEE Annals, this article gives a historical explanation of the endemic confusion surrounding the stored-program concept. After a detailed investigation of the history of this idea, the authors propose three more precisely defined alternatives to capture specific aspects of the new approach to computing introduced in 1945 by John von Neumann and his collaborators.

Language Design with the Spoofax Language Workbench

IDEs are essential for programming language developers, and state-of-the-art IDE support is mandatory for programming languages to be successful. Although IDE features for mainstream programming languages are typically implemented manually, this often isn't feasible for programming languages that must be developed with significantly fewer resources. The Spoofax language workbench is a platform for developing textual programming languages with state-of-the-art IDE support. Spoofax is a comprehensive environment that integrates syntax definition, name binding, type analysis, program transformation, code generation, and declarative specification of IDE components. It also provides high-level languages for each of these aspects. These languages are highly declarative, abstracting over the implementation of IDE features and letting engineers focus on language design.

There is a growing literature demonstrating the importance of collaboration and teamwork in the process of learning computational thinking and the foundational aspects of computer science. While Collaborative Virtual environments are becoming widespread in the software development professional domain and in various areas of advanced learning, their use in the introductory stages of learning computing is still very limited. On the other hand, in recent years, there has been a blooming of attractive programming environments specifically designed to expose young students (e.g., middle school age) to computational thinking. Alice is a very popular introductory programming environment, focused on programming through animations and story-telling. This paper introduces a novel extension of the Alice framework that enables interaction and collaboration among students in the development of programs. In particular, the new version of Alice described in this paper provides support for virtual pair programming. The modified version of Alice allows two students to remotely share a virtual world, and interact in its construction;the system supports roles assignments, to allow teachers to control activities and contributions of the two students in the creation of a programming project.

As a trend, our everyday goods are changing to program-controlled ones from pure mechanical or electrical ones. The concept of 'coded object' was proposed for such a new generation product by Kitchin and Dooge. We propose a novel interaction method using OCR for coded objects, which is aimed at simplifying the operations on the configuration of coded objects and making the recording, sharing, and distribution of the configurations universal. We constructed a prototype for proof-of-concept using a digital SLR (single lens reflex camera). In this prototype, we utilize open-source OCR engine "tesseract" trained by handwritten character images and adding a preprocessing of projective transforms in order to cope with free angle capture by the camera. This prototype can be configured by shooting handwritten texts.

While visual programming has had success in some areas such as introductory or domain specific programming, professional developers typically still use a text editor. Designing a visual tool for professionals poses a number of challenges: visualizations must be flexible to support a variety of different tasks, interactions must be fluid to retain productivity, and the visual editing must scale to large software projects. In this paper we introduce Envision, a visual structured code editor that addresses these challenges using an architecture that supports flexible, customizable visualizations, keyboard-centric controls for fluid interaction, and optimizations to ensure good performance for large projects. Experiments with CogTool indicate that Envision's code manipulation techniques are as efficient as those of Eclipse, thus overcoming a major usability barrier for visual programming for professional developers.

In this paper, a model-based framework called 'Self Adaptive Framework for Robotic Systems (SafeRobots)' for designing robotic software architectures is proposed. With the help of an example of designing an architecture for mobile robot mapping system, it will be shown how formal domain knowledge can be used at multiple abstraction levels in a model-driven engineering approach. The solution pool for a particular problem is modeled using Solution Space Modeling Language. An eclipse based tool-suite is developed for modeling the solution space and for deriving a concrete operational model by explicitly defining the non-functional properties of the constituent components.

Replacing ANSI C language with other modern programming languages such as Python or Java may be an actual debate topic in technical universities. Researchers whose primary interests are not in programming area seem to prefer modern and higher level languages. Keeping standard language ANSI C as a primary tool for engineers and for microcontrollers programming, robotics and data acquisition courses is another strong different opinion trend. Function oriented versus object oriented languages may be another highlighted topic in actual debates.
