The authors present VAMPIRE a visual system for rapid generation of iconic programming systems. VAMPIRE uses a graphical class editor to construct a hierarchy describing an iconic language's structure. Each node in the hierarchy represents an abstraction of a group of language elements; each leaf represents an icon which can be placed into a program. Attributes are added to each 'class' in the tree to represent aspects of the language elements, including 'icons' which describe the graphical visualization of the elements and 'rules' which describe the semantics of the element. The semantics of the language are defined using attributed graphical rule. VAMPIRE has been designed so that it can create iconic systems similar to all of the major classes which have appeared to date in the literature.< >

The i-vectors with Probabilistic Linear Discriminative Analysis (PLDA) are known to be one of the latest and most advanced techniques in the field of Automatic Speaker Recognition (ASR). The paper focuses on the development of i-vector/PLDA based the ASR systems in two programming environments, namely Python and MATLAB, which are popular among machine-learning community. Comparative evaluation of system performance, in terms of accuracy and computational requirements, for both platforms is presented.

Summary form only given. AIAC algorithms (Asynchronous Iterations Asynchronous Communications) are a particular class of parallel iterative algorithms. Their asynchronous nature makes them more efficient than their synchronous counterparts in numerous cases as has already been shown in previous works. The first goal is to compare several parallel programming environments in order to see if there is one of them which is best suited to efficiently implement AIAC algorithms. The main criterion for this comparison consists in the performances achieved in a global context of grid computing for two classical scientific problems. Nevertheless, we also take into account two secondary criteria, which are the ease of programming and the ease of deployment. The second goal is to extract from this comparison the important features that a parallel programming environment must have in order to be suited for the implementation of AIAC algorithms.

The paper presents a quantitative evaluation of the temporal behavior of object oriented programs implemented using different programming environments. The main focus of the evaluation is the real time properties and the overhead caused by each layer of the underlying communication architecture, in order to verify the suitability of those environments for developing distributed real time object oriented systems. In the current state of the work, Java/RMI running over Windows 95 and AO/C++ running over QNX OS are compared. An extension of the comparison to include DCOM/Windows95, DCOM/Windows NT and ObjecTime/Windows NT is under development.

Computer consumers are the largest group of computer users, many of which are highly creative and experts in their area. Despite the fact they have no formal education in computer programming, they want to express their creativity and develop their own applications which will satisfy their needs. Nowadays, consumers can build their own personalized software artifacts using Geppeto (Widget Parallel programming Tool) by building personalized workflows and dataflows over widgets, small standalone Web applications. However, computer consumers are prone to making mistakes while programming, which results in bugs in their applications. Consumers require assistance of skilled programmers in order to build dependable and error-free applications. This paper discusses new debugging methods based on professional debugging techniques, which will be understandable to average consumer. These methods will allow consumers controlled execution of their applications in order to find and remove bugs. Methods described in this paper are suitable for debugging consumer applications in a widget-oriented consumer programming environment like Geppeto, and include animated step-by-step execution of the consumer's application, adding breakpoints within widget composition and introducing interactive backtracking in order to detect erroneous widget.

This article is chiefly concerned with multilingual programming language and system for collaboration of programming education in K-12. For a programming language to become a multilingual, it could be programmed in a manner independent on any locale. And this locale independent resource files can be easily translated into a new locale. Therefore when a multilingual programming language for K-12 is designed, it should have no keywords that have a particular meaning to the programming language. In addition, it specifies a set of characters which are based on Unicode character instead of a single character. Dolittle as a both multilingual and educational programming language has all kinds of features described above. Especially, it supports translation server for interculture collaboration between Korea and Japan to teach and learn programming education in K-12. We also conducted experimental lesson to evaluate the effectiveness of Dolittle's inflected dictionary in Korea. It was found from the result of the experimental lesson that using inflected dictionary of identifiers can decrease overall error ratio in comparison with using only one identifier.

Heterogeneous configurable computing systems containing general-purpose processors, special-purpose processors, field-programmable gate arrays (FPGAs), and application-specific integrated circuits (ASICs) present several programming and development challenges. The ADAPTERS effort is addressing these challenges by focusing on three technology areas: (1) a unified data flow programming environment, (2) hardware/software partitioning and mapping tool, along with a system level modeling tool, and (3) a dynamic reconfiguration run-time environment for FPGAs. To investigate automatic mapping techniques, a constant false alarm rate (CFAR) application has been implemented on a combined PC/WILDFORCE platform. The combined platform containing FPGAs provided a 20% improvement in the end-to-end latency compared to a software solution running on a PC. An image compression example has also been developed to explore mode-based dynamic FPGA reconfiguration. The dynamic reconfiguration technology being developed can be used to adapt the behavior of systems, such as satellites, to changing internal and external conditions.

Parallel and distributed programming and execution environments are becoming more complex. Part of the complexity arises because different tools in these environments need to share program information. The authors discuss the way in which an object-oriented database is used to integrate all the information used by such tools. Specifically, they describe how information generated by the program-monitoring tool is stored and how other tools, such as a user interface and an adaptation controller, use this information. The CHAOS and ISSOS projects, the monitoring tool, and data storage are discussed.< >

Applying the Block-Based programming Language ALICE for Developing programming Competencies in University Students

The information society is part of modern life, and algorithmic thinking and programming are relevant to everybody, regardless of educational background. Today's world needs professionals with computing competencies. Higher education programming classes usually use text-based programming languages to develop programming competencies, usually without success for all students. Traditional programming languages consider syntax barriers that complicate their adoption and usefulness for students. Block-based programming languages such as SCRATCH and ALICE permit the development of programming competencies without text coding and syntax restrictions to solve that issue. There are different research works on SCRATCH experiences, but not many experiences on how to use ALICE overall in higher education. This article aims to evaluate the effectiveness of the ALICE programming language in enhancing programming learning outcomes for university students and addressing the limited number of empirical studies of ALICE in higher education contexts. The research involved a literature review to provide a theoretical foundation, followed by an experimental phase that involved two groups: the control group, which followed the traditional programming instruction method with a text-based programming language, and the experimental group, which used the block-based ALICE environment. The experimental group achieved better results with an average score of 80, while the control group scored 65 points on a 100-point scale. The results obtained highlight the effectiveness of the ALICE environment in supporting the programming learning process for first-level Software Engineering university students.
