P-graph is a popularly used framework for process network synthesis (PNS) and network topological optimization. This short communication introduces a Python interface for P-graph to serve as a linkage to modern programming ecosystems. This allows for a wider application of the fast and efficient P-graph solver, to provide structural and topological enumeration in numerous fields. The proposed framework allows for more integrative usage in Artificial Intelligence (AI), machine learning, process system engineering, chemical engineering and chemometrics. Large and repetitive topologies can also be automated using the new programming interface, saving time and effort in modelling. This short communication serves as a demonstration of the newly developed open-sourced P-graph interface. (c) 2022 The Authors. Wireless communications are evolving towards multi-standard systems. As multiple radio technologies need to be integrated into a single mobile terminal, the complexity of the transceiver increases considerably. Programmable architectures and re-use of hardware and software are good methods for tackling this complexity. A programmable hardware platform is presented that enables software-defined implementation of wideband code division multiple access (WCDMA) and orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) baseband receivers. The platform is composed of a reduced instruction set computer (RISC) core and three coprocessors. An analysis of the WCDMA and OFDM receiver algorithms shows that the algorithms employ many similar computation kernels, which can be used as functional building blocks in the dual-mode receiver implementation. The programming interface of the proposed platform does not require low-level programming or language extensions, which facilitates productive software development. SystemC-based functional simulations were carried out to find the minimum operation frequency of the platform in different modes and the power consumption was measured with gate-level simulations.

Effectively implementing scientific algorithms in distributed memory parallel applications is a difficult task for domain scientists, as evident by the large number of domain-specific languages and libraries available today attempting to facilitate the process. However, they usually provide a closed set of parallel patterns and are not open for extension without vast modifications to the underlying system. In this work, we present the AllScale API, a programming interface for developing distributed memory parallel applications with the ease of shared memory programming models. The AllScale API is closed for a modification but open for an extension, allowing new user-defined parallel patterns and data structures to be implemented based on existing core primitives and therefore fully supported in the AllScale framework. Focusing on high-level functionality directly offered to application developers, we present the design advantages of such an API design, detail some of its specifications and evaluate it using three real-world use cases. Our results show that AllScale decreases the complexity of implementing scientific applications for distributed memory while attaining comparable or higher performance compared to MPI reference implementations.

epiC: an Extensible and Scalable System for Processing Big Data

The Big Data problem is characterized by the so-called 3V features: volume - a huge amount of data, velocity - a high data ingestion rate, and variety - a mix of structured data, semi-structured data, and unstructured data. The state-of-the-art solutions to the Big Data problem are largely based on the MapReduce framework (aka its open source implementation Hadoop). Although Hadoop handles the data volume challenge successfully, it does not deal with the data variety well since the programming interfaces and its associated data processing model are inconvenient and inefficient for handling structured data and graph data. This paper presents epiC, an extensible system to tackle the Big Datas data variety challenge. epiC introduces a general Actor-like concurrent programming model, independent of the data processing models, for specifying parallel computations. Users process multi-structured datasets with appropriate epiC extensions, and the implementation of a data processing model best suited for the data type and auxiliary code for mapping that data processing model into epiCs concurrent programming model. Like Hadoop, programs written in this way can be automatically parallelized and the runtime system takes care of fault tolerance and inter-machine communications. We present the design and implementation of epiCs concurrent programming model. We also present two customized data processing models, an optimized MapReduce extension and a relational model, on top of epiC. We show how users can leverage epiC to process heterogeneous data by linking different types of operators together. To improve the performance of complex analytic jobs, epiC supports a partition-based optimization technique where data are streamed between the operators to avoid the high I/O overheads. Experiments demonstrate the effectiveness and efficiency of our proposed epiC.

Until recently, users of ESO's Very Large Telescope had to prepare Observing Blocks (OBs) with a standalone desktop tool. Tool support for automated OB mass production was mostly limited to imaging public surveys. Furthermore, there was no connection between the OB preparation software and other ancillary tools, such as Exposure Time Calculators, finding chart preparation software, and observatory schedule, meaning that users had to re-type the same information in several tools, and could design observations that would be incompatible with the Service Mode schedule. To address these shortcomings, we have implemented a new programming interface (API) and a state-of-the-art web application which provide observers with unprecedented flexibility and promote the usage of instrument and science-case specific tools, from small scripts to full-blown user interfaces. In this paper, we describe the software architecture of our solution, important design concepts and the technology stack adopted. We report on first user experience in both Visitor and Service Mode. We discuss tailored API programming examples, solving specific user requirements, and explain API usage scenarios for the next generation of ESO instruments. Finally, we describe the future evolution of our new approach.

We present an initial step towards building a system for programmers to edit code using free-form sketch annotations drawn directly onto editor and output windows. Using a working prototype system as a technical probe, an exploratory study (N = 6) examines how programmers sketch to annotate Python code to communicate edits for an AI model to perform. The results reveal personalized workflow strategies and how similar annotations vary in abstractness and intention across different scenarios and users.

This paper adopted an iterative design process to gain insights into programmers' strategies when using LLMs for programming. We proposed CoLadder, a novel system that supports programmers by facilitating hierarchical task decomposition, direct code segment manipulation, and result evaluation during prompt authoring. A user study with 12 experienced programmers showed that CoLadder is effective in helping programmers externalize their problem-solving intentions flexibly, improving their ability to evaluate and modify code across various abstraction levels, from their task's goal to final code implementation.

Visual programming environments such as Scratch have been proposed for beginners. In those environments, programming is possible by arranging function blocks expressed on two dimensions. In order to improve the browsability of many blocks, an environment for programming by arranging functional blocks with hand gesture interaction in immersive VR space has been proposed. However, the usability of the environment was low due to the error of estimation of hand gesture. Therefore, in this study, we propose an operation method using VR controller for programming in an immersive VR environment and confirm the usability of the method by comparing with a method by hand gesture. We will incorporate these results into future development.

Efficient and scalable support for RDF/OWL data storage, loading, inferencing and querying, in conjunction with already available support for enterprise level data and operations reliability requirements, can make databases suitable to act as enterprise-level RDF/OWL repository and hence become a viable platform for building semantic applications for the enterprise environments. This tutorial outlines the requirements for supporting semantic technologies in databases including bulk load and data manipulation operations, inference based on RDFS, OWL and user-defined rules, and support for SPARQL queries. It also discusses the design choices for handling issues that arise in implementing support for storage and operations on large scale RDF/OWL data, and in general, touches upon the practical aspects related to RDF/OWL support that become important in enterprise environments. Semantic technologies support in Oracle Database is used as a case study to illustrate with concrete examples the key requirements and design issues.
