This chapter provides an overview of a programming language for Genetic Engineering of Cells (GEC). A GEC program specifies a genetic circuit at a high level of abstraction through constraints on otherwise unspecified DNA parts. The GEC compiler then selects parts which satisfy the constraints from a given parts database. GEC further provides more conventional programming language constructs for abstraction, e.g., through modularity. The GEC language and compiler is available through a Web tool which also provides functionality, e.g., for simulation of designed circuits. less

Incorporating programming languages in the enhancement of the learning process for sequential logic circuit design

Logic circuits can generally be classified into two categories of combinational and sequential logic circuits. In the sequential circuit design, although it is easy to construct a state transition table from state transition diagram, creating an excitation table according to the memory type is a very laborious and time-consuming task. There are several software-based applications and hardware description languages to describe the structure and behavior of electronic circuits. This will take more time and persistence much like learning any other skill. Computer science degrees include courses focused mainly on programming languages. There is a strong case to be made for use of skills acquired in programming courses to shorten the learning curve. Thus, this work proposes a method for the implementation of the circuit incorporating only the state equations of the sequential circuit without dealing with excitation tables. This allows to model the behavior of circuit through buttonbox, checkbox, textbox, etc., which are the basic elements of the graphical user interface-based programming language. A questionnaire was utilized to assess the change in the learning activity of students and perceptions of the proposed method. The results provided that the method was an effective and engaging way of teaching the sequential circuit design. (c) 2022 Sharif University of Technology. All rights reserved.

Discrete Wavelet Transform in digital audio signal processing: A case study of programming languages performance analysis

The time spent processing the test set is a crucial factor in research projects involving audio signal transforms. The present work analyzes the performance of a set of programming languages commonly used in this type of scientific research. The results showed the C and C++ languages as faster in a test suite with 8 different programming languages implementing the discrete Wavelet transform.

This paper proposes a first comparison of different agent-oriented programming languages, including the SARL agent-programming language. The study of those tools is based upon various criteria that are defining the essential aspects of multi-agent systems. For the sake of clarity, the comparative study is presented in a tabular form, including the languages and all the criteria. For each criterion, a definition is made to understand its meaning. At the end of the article, all the languages will be described in order to define their advantages and disadvantages.

Software defect prediction is a constant challenge in industrial software engineering and represents a significant problem for quality and cost in software development worldwide . The purpose of this study is to gain a deeper understanding of the quartiles, countries, keywords, techniques, metrics, tools, platforms or languages, variables, data sources, and datasets used in software defect prediction. A comprehensive search of 45 articles from 2019 to 2023, using 5 databases (Scopus, ProQuest, ScienceDirect, EBSCOhost, and Web of Science), was conducted following the PRISMA (Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analysis) methodology. Results show that 60.00 % of the studies were carried out in 2023, and 68.89 % of journals were in the Q1 and Q2 quartiles. The most common techniques were Support Vector Machine (42.22 %) and Random Forest (35.56 %). The most commonly used evaluation metrics were Accuracy and F1-Score (68.89 %). Python was the main programming language (35.56 %), with Kilo (thousands) of lines of code (31.11 %) and Cyclomatic complexity (26.67 %) as key variables. Finally, NASA's Metrics Data Program Data Repository was the most used data source (31.11 %) with a dataset ranging from a minimum of 759 instances and 37 attributes to a maximum of 3579 instances and 38 attributes from 5 projects: CM1, MW1, PC1, PC3, and PC4. This systematic review provides scientific evidence on how machine learning algorithms aid in predicting software defects and improving development processes. In addition, it offers a detailed discussion by identifying trends, limitations, successful approaches, and areas for improvement, providing valuable recommendations for future research.

CSchema： A Downgrading Policy language for XML Access Control

The problem of regulating access to XML documents has attracted much attention from both academic and industry communities. In existing approaches, the XML elements specified by access policies axe either accessible or inaccessible according to their sensitivity. However, in some cases, the original XML elements are sensitive and inaccessible, but after being processed in some appropriate ways, the results become insensitive and thus accessible. This paper proposes a policy language to accommodate such cases, which can express the downgrading operations on sensitive data in XML documents through explicit calculations on them. The proposed policy language is called calculation-embedded schema （CSchema）, which extends the ordinary schema languages with protection type for protecting sensitive data and specifying downgrading operations. CSchema language has a type system to guarantee the type correctness of the embedded calculation expressions and moreover this type system also generates a security view after type checking a CSchema policy. Access policies specified by CSchema are enforced by a validation procedure, which produces the released documents containing only the accessible data by validating the protected documents against CSchema policies. These released documents are then ready to be accessed by, for instance, XML query engines. By incorporating this validation procedure, other XML processing technologies can use CSchema as the access control module.

Customer reviews as the measure of software quality

Open Source Software (OSS) has become ubiquitous nowadays. It is crucial for the OSS project managers as well as developers to understand users' perception of quality to remain consistent with producing good quality software. To understand users' point of view, like many studies in the commercial product/service sectors which rely upon customer reviews to understand customer behaviour, the authors' main focus is to analyse user ratings and reviews of OSS projects that may represent user satisfaction for that particular software application. We have analysed 41,428 customer reviews (obtained from ***) of 886 most popular OSS projects belonging to a specific domain and programming language. The results indicate that overall user ratings and reviews of the popular OSS projects contain a very positive sentiment and more frequent occurrence of emotions like joy, anticipation, and trust as compared to disgust, fear, and surprise. Further, we have examined that the affectiveness of customer reviews with respect to OSS popularity and quality aspects along with their programming languages and problem domains. The results show a stronger association of review affectiveness with the number of reviews than with the number of downloads of the OSS projects, and more downloads do not mean more reviews.

Passive knowledge procurement in face-to-face learning is no longer the way education is imparted in higher education these days. Instead, new and developing Information and Communication Technologies (ICT) are emerging as a promising paradigm for creating a profound change in digitizing education. It facilitates active learning with the enhancement in its delivery and how students grasp it by representing the shift from traditional desktop-as-a-platform towards the network-as-a-platform model. This paper proposes an extended Technology Acceptance Model (TAM) with ICT-based teaching and learning platform. TAM is the fundamental model to understand user perceptions and behavior towards potential acceptance or rejection of the technology. A mixed research methodology is adopted, comprising a series of survey questionnaires, evaluation of results, and the undergraduate student's performance in the collection of quantitative and qualitative data to measure the acceptance of the proposed research model. For the practical implication of the proposed research model, four groups of 300 students each or two programming courses: C++ and Java, were analyzed in two consecutive academic sessions in a controlled environment for lecture and laboratory classes. Series of statistical result analyses were performed and examined with hypothesized relationships to measure the desired outcome. It measures the impact on the following constructs: student interest, motivation, understanding, satisfaction, class attention and interaction, attendance, improve grades, and perception of pedagogical effect. Results show positive effects for identified research questions and hypotheses, helping students with the knowledge, understanding, and deep learning programming and debugging skills.
