This paper presents FITIn, a bit-error injection tool designed for evaluating software-implemented hardware fault tolerance (SIHFT) mechanisms. Like most bit-error injection tools, FITIn injects faults at run time into the binary of a program. Unlike previous bit-error injection tools, FITIn allows a software developer to control the targets of injection campaigns at the level of a higher programming language rather than assembler. FITIn is implemented as a Valgrind plugin and has been tested for C programs. We present its architecture, demonstrate its functioning using examples from three benchmarks (Dhrystone, STAMP, and CoreMark), provide performance figures, and discuss general limitations of the approach.

Top trees are a dynamic self-adjusting data structure that can be used by any tree algorithm. Actually, an arbitrary number of different tree algorithms can use a single structure. In our previous work, we have implemented top trees, but the usage still requires a detail knowledge of the structure which is quite complex. In this paper, we introduce Top Tree Friendly language (TFL) and Top Tree Query language (TQL). The TFL is a special programming language which combines declarative and procedural approaches that results in simpler and faster algorithm designing. The query language TQL provides an easy top trees administration. The implementation of top trees, the programming language TFL and the query language TQL together form a complex solution for using top trees.

Current browser-level security solutions do not provide a mechanism for information flow control (IFC) policies. As such, they need to be combined with language-based security approaches. Practical implementations for ICF enforcement remains a challenge when the full spectrum of web applications features is taken into account (i.e. JavaScript features, web APIs, DOM, portability, performance, etc.). In this work we develop GIFC, a permissive-upgrade-based inlined monitoring mechanism to detect unwanted information flow in web applications. GIFC covers a wide range of JavaScript features that give rise to implicit flows. In contrast to related work, GIFC also handles dynamic code evaluation online, and it features an API function model mechanism that enables information tracking through APIs calls. As a result, GIFC can handle information flows that use DOM nodes as channels of information. We validate GIFC by means of a benchmark suite from literature specifically designed for information flow verification, which we also extend. We compare GIFC qualitatively with respect to closest related work and show that GIFC performs better at detecting unwanted implicit flows.

Programmers need to have a wide range of skills to perform their tasks. Using programming tools is not enough for purveying full functionality and development and thus should be combined with essential abilities such as problem-solving, along with in-depth knowledge about operating systems, hardware, and software. Hence, knowledge concerning these various aspects is important. In this study, we propose an interactive programmer skills dictionary in both English and Thai called PS-Dict. Our system produces a Knowledge Graphs using with the first paragraph from a Wikipedia Infobox. The comparison results show that PS-Dict could provide useful information in terms of skill descriptions and a list of related knowledge.

Solidity, like other programming languages, is evolving with many new features being introduced and deprecated features being removed. However, not every feature benefits developers and sometimes it may do more harm than good. In the hope of knowing the actual use of language features and helping improving them, we summarize 41 common features, discuss their pros and cons, and conduct an empirical study. We design an extensible feature analysis tool to analyze their distribution in 172,645 real-world smart contracts. We further analyze the reason why some features are popular. We invite readers for a case study to understand the usage patterns and how seemingly benign features produce subtle bugs. It turns out that some features like high-level function invocations, visibility, events, and assertions are popular while developers cares little about some other features like function modifier overloading. After summarizing our findings, we give suggestions to different people in Solidity community.

This research work ascertained the effect of Visual Basic (VBasic) programming Instructional Delivery using Web-Based Tools on Students' Interest and Academic Achievement in Universities in Nigeria. The purpose of the study is to determine the effect of Visual Basic (VBasic) programming Instructional Delivery using Web-Based Tools on Students' Interest and Academic Achievement in Universities in Nigeria. The study embraced a quasi-experimental research design. The respondent for this study comprised 74 students in year two of Alex Ekwueme Federal University, Ndu-ufu Alike and Ebonyi State University, Abakaliki. For the fact that the population is small and manageable, the entire population were studied. Researchers used VBasic programming Achievement Test (VBPAT) instrument developed to collect data. Visual Basic Achievement Test contained 50-item questions with letter A to D options for each interest scale were used for data collection. The reliability was tested using Cronbach's Alpha. To ensure consistency and integrity, lecturers in the study area. The researchers trained the lecturers on how to distribute the instrument for both the experiment and control groups in order to ensure homogeneous instruction. The lecturers taught the experimental group using the utilization of a web-based approach and the control group using the conventional approach. Scores generated from the experimental test using Visual Basic programming Achievement Test (V + B + PAT), were analysed using mean and analysis of covariance (ANCOVA) for answering research questions and to test hypotheses respectively at 0.5 level of significance with the aid of statistical package for social science (SPSS) version 20. Memory leak detection for C programs is a significant while difficult research field. Based on executable formal semantics of C programming language, a new method is proposed in this paper for memory leak detection. By extending and modifying state Configuration and rules of memory manipulation and pointer manipulation in semantics, this method can employ the powerful expression and executive capacity of rewriting logic to describe both behaviors of memory operation such as malloc, free, pointer and unit of scope, and memory leak pattern of C programs in executable semantics. Because the modified state Configuration and rules are executable, the memory leak flaws can be matched and detected automatically by execution. Three typical memory leak flaws, namely unreleased allocated-memory, pointer reassigning and inconsistency between allocated space and released space, are tested with some code segments containing them to verify the method. The results and testing time show that the semantics-based method can detect memory leak flaws in C programs effectively.

Nowadays, the main advances in computational power are due to parallelism. However, most parallel languages have been designed with a focus on processors and threads. This makes dealing with data and memory in programs hard, which distances the implementation from its original algorithm. We propose a new paradigm for parallel programming, the data-autonomous paradigm, where computation is performed by autonomous data elements. Programs in this paradigm are focused on making the data collaborate in a highly parallel fashion. We furthermore present AuDaLa, the first data autonomous programming language, and include an operational semantics. programming in AuDaLa is very natural, as illustrated by examples, albeit in a style very different from sequential and contemporary parallel programming.

This paper addresses the software aspect of an integrated hardware-software scheme called LGDG for computation with ‘large-grain dataflow graph’. It will show that data flow analysis^* can be used to obtain parallel LGDG code at a cost comparable to that of an optimizing compiler. Unintentional data dependencies have been recognized to be a major obstacle for parallelizing imperative languages. In order to reduce unintentional data dependencies and ease the data flow analysis, a restricted imperative language is specified. An efficient representation of assertion sets is proposed, and rules for calculating synthesized attributes are presented. A theorem is provided to ensure function-preserving parallelization. © Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg 1990.

The paper presents two novel conceptual metrics for measuring coupling and cohesion in software systems. Our first metric, Conceptual Coupling between Object classes (CCBO), is based on the well-known CBO coupling metric, while the other metric, Conceptual Lack of Cohesion on Methods (CLCOM5), is based on the LCOM5 cohesion metric. One advantage of the proposed conceptual metrics is that they can be computed in a simpler (and in many cases, programming language independent) way as compared to some of the structural metrics. We empirically studied CCBO and CLCOM5 for predicting fault-proneness of classes in a large open-source system and compared these metrics with a host of existing structural and conceptual metrics for the same task. As the result, we found that the proposed conceptual metrics, when used in conjunction, can predict bugs nearly as precisely as the 58 structural metrics available in the Columbus source code quality framework and can be effectively combined with these metrics to improve bug prediction.
