Increasing performance of computing systems necessitates providing solutions for improving scalability and productivity. In recent times, data-driven Program eXecution Models (PXMs) are gaining popularity due to their superior support compared to traditional von Neumann execution models. However, exposing the benefits of such PXMs within a high-level programming language remains a challenge. Although many high-level programming languages and APIs support concurrency and multi-threading (e.g., C++11, Java, OpenMP, MPI, etc.), their synchronisation models make large use of mutex and locks, generally leading to poor system performance. Conversely, one major appeal of Go programming language is the way it supports concurrency: goroutines (tagged functions) are mapped on OS threads and communicate each other through data structures buffering input data (channels). By forcing goroutines to exchange data only through channels, it is possible to enable a data-driven execution. This paper proposes a first attempt to map goroutines on a data-driven based PXM. Go compilation procedure and the run-time library are modified to exploit the execution of fine-grain threads on an abstracted parallel machine model.

In this paper I describe methods, how to use steganographic techniques to hide data in MS Office and Internet files. In the first chapter I present the idea of data hiding. Basic terms concerning steganography like steganographic data, function, key and capacity are explained here. In the second chapter I explain the object oriented construction of documents, which are created with MS Office software and with scripts included in dynamic web pages. I put the emphasis on the observation, how easy is to access wide range of files and their contents. The third chapter is dedicated to scripting programming. I draw attention to Visual Basic scripting language and its features. I include here the description of example objects and functions used to access basic data. which can be potentially used to hide secret information. Next chapter contains my conception how to estimate steganographic data capacity. Finally, in conclusion I underline the fact, that we do not really know, what documents and web pages really contain.

The paper presents two novel conceptual metrics for measuring coupling and cohesion in software systems. Our first metric, Conceptual Coupling between Object classes (CCBO), is based on the well-known CBO coupling metric, while the other metric, Conceptual Lack of Cohesion on Methods (CLCOM5), is based on the LCOM5 cohesion metric. One advantage of the proposed conceptual metrics is that they can be computed in a simpler (and in many cases, programming language independent) way as compared to some of the structural metrics. We empirically studied CCBO and CLCOM5 for predicting fault-proneness of classes in a large open-source system and compared these metrics with a host of existing structural and conceptual metrics for the same task. As the result, we found that the proposed conceptual metrics, when used in conjunction, can predict bugs nearly as precisely as the 58 structural metrics available in the Columbus source code quality framework and can be effectively combined with these metrics to improve bug prediction.

Confusion between ICT and computer science has lead to an underestimation of the latter in the schools' curricula. Students are involved to use computers rather than to create and produce. Many efforts are done toward inserting computer science in the schools' curricula;However, Computer science should be treated at an equal level with other sciences. The concepts are not more complex than other sciences. Psychologists and pedagogists prove that students are able to learn different concepts according to their intellectual age when these concepts are brought to them with an appropriate methodology.

Appearance of computing machines dates back to the 1940s and their corresponding scientific disciplines, computer science resp. informatics, have arisen in the 1960s. Nevertheless, fighting for appropriate programming and specification languages has not yet come to an end: The Java-programming language and the Abstract State Machines ASM are new and representative specimens which have arisen recently. These languages are even advancing and improving themselves: Original Java 1996, a flat language language without class nestings, towards more modern Java 2000 with nested classes, and Basic ASM resp. Evolving Algebras 1988/91 towards Turbo ASM 2003 where machines and rules show new features like naming, parameterizing, local states and recursive calls. These transitions inside Java resp. ASM remind at a much earlier transition from Fortran and Algol 58 to Algol 60 with its block concept and nested, parameterized, recursive and formal procedures. Aim of the present essay is to show that many of those new concepts incorporated in new Java and Turbo ASM were already available in Algo160.

As big software projects grow, there is an increasing need of cleaning up or restructuring the existing code. This problem can be addressed by using refactorings, which are small semantics-preserving code transformations. Many refactorings have been automated in existing development environments to help the developer in this process. Most implementations are currently based on the abstract syntax tree. Unfortunately, this model, which was first designed for the compilation process, does not provide all the abstractions that are required for complex refactorings such as extracting a method. In this paper, the FOOD model is introduced and described. Based entirely on graphs, this model is targeted to the implementation of complex code transformations by providing the necessary abstractions. The "extract method" refactoring is applied on the FOOD model as a concrete example. Then a comparison with existing models such as abstract syntax trees is made.

Direct microprogrammed execution of the intermediate text from a high-level language compiler

Microprogramming commonly executed operations can improve the computational speed of data processing systems. This paper describes how microprogramming may be used to execute directly the intermediate text generated by a high-level language compiler after syntactic and semantic analysis of the input source program. Direct microprogrammed execution of common forms of intermediate text-i.e. quadruples, triples, and duos-has been simulated. A comparison is made, in terms of storage requirements and execution time, of this direct microprogrammed system with the present methods which result in machine language representation and execution of the intermediate text. Direct generation of a microprogram from the high-level language statements is also examined. Timing assumptions for comparative purposes have been based on the IBM 360 MOD 50 system. Simulation and timing estimates for the microprograms have been carried out on a microprogram directed simulator which closely represents the architectural organization of the MOD 50. © 1975.

Designing a pipeline for a multicore processor is difficult. One major challenge is designing it such that the pipeline correctly enforces the intended memory consistency model (MCM). We have developed the PipeGen design automation tool to allow architects to start with a single core pipeline that only enforces single-threaded correctness and automatically transform it to enforce a given MCM. Our key innovation is a set of compiler-like transformations that codify three different ways of enforcing memory ordering at the pipeline. We have validated that PipeGen correctly enforces the ARMv8 and x86TSO MCMs on three distinct pipeline implementations, using litmus tests with the Murphi model checker.

Heterogeneous modelling and design tools allow the design of software systems using several computation models. The designed system is built by assembling components that obey a computation model. The internal behavior of a component is specified either in some programming language or by assembling sub-components that obey a possibly different computation model. When the same behavior is used in several computation models, it must be implemented in as many components as there are models, or, if the design platform supports it, it may be implemented as a generic component. Model-specific components require the recoding of the same core behavior several times, and generic components may not take model-specific features into account. In this paper, we introduce the notion of domain-polymorph component. Such a component is able to adapt a core behavior to the semantics of several computation models. The core behavior is implemented only once and is automatically adapted to the semantics of different computation models. Domain-polymorph components can be chosen by a system designer and integrated in a computation model: they will benefit from an appropriate execution environment and their semantics will be adapted to the host model. The designer will have the choice for several parameters of the adaptation. Contrary to generic components, such components adapt their behavior to the host model instead of letting the host model interpret their generic behavior. We also present an implementation of the concept of domain-polymorph component in the Ptolemy II framework.

In software engineering, relying on experience can render maintainability expertise into prejudice over time. For example, based on their own experience, some consider JavaScript as inelegant language and hence of lowest maintainability. Such prejudice should not guide decisions without prior empirical validation. Hence, we formulated 10 hypotheses about maintainability based on prejudices and test them in a large set of open-source projects (6,897 GitHub repositories, 402 million lines, 5 programming languages). We operationalize maintainability with five static analysis metrics. We found that JavaScript code is not worse than other code, Java code shows higher maintainability than C# code and C code has longer methods than other code. The quality of interface documentation is better in Java code than in other code. Code developed by teams is not of higher and large code bases not of lower maintainability. Projects with high maintainability are not more popular or more often forked. Overall, most hypotheses are not supported by open-source data.
