In this paper we present a programming language for writing programs for matrices operations, such as addition, subtraction, multiplication, determinant, inverse and cofactors and so on. This language operates with any dimension matrices. The instructions of this language are simple to use and learn by mathematicians at high school and to elaborate LATEX format courses with a minimal efforts, because of its simple lexical units and syntactic rules. These instructions are similar to that used in the matrices courses. So it can be used by students and or teachers without knowledge on other high level programming languages like C, C++, Java, Matlab, Scilab or other scientific programming languages.

Student ability and difficulties with transfer from a block-based programming language into other programming languages: a case study in Colombia

Background and context: Transfer is a process where students apply their learning to different contexts. This process includes using their knowledge to solve problems with similar complexity, and in new contexts. In the context of programming, transfer also includes being able to understand and use different programming languages. Objective: This study explores: (a) student ability to transfer from a block-based programming language into another block-based programming language;(b) student ability to transfer from a block-based programming language to a text-based programming language;(d) student ability to transfer their learning within the same programming language;and (d) the difficulties students had to transfer in these contexts. Method: A group of students participating in a program called Coding For Kids explained three different programs in different programming languages during an interview protocol. The students used the programming language MakeCode, and worked on transfer activities in Scratch and Python. Findings: The results suggest that while most students are able to transfer between block-based programming languages, most of them struggle to explain a program in a text-based programming language, and to solve a new coding challenge.

An important benefit of formal methods is the ability to unambiguously describe the requirements of a program and to provide evidence of the compliance of the software code with these requirements. However, formal analysis on programs written in languages that are used today in avionics can be challenging since these languages have features, such as pointers, that complicate program verification. So, to enable formal verification, one must limit the language to a subset and/or one must endure a considerable annotation overhead. This paper presents Sim, a new high-level programming language that is designed for the development and verification of safety-critical software. The Sim language has been designed so that only a small annotation overhead is needed and one can make extensive use of automatic verification tools. We show that in Sim 4 to 5 times fewer annotations are needed compared to programs written in VeriFast-C to prove equivalent properties. We additionally demonstrate that Sim is suitable as a language for avionics software development by implementing and verifying an elementary fly-by-wire application and deploying it on an STM32 microcontroller.

In this paper, a teaching model combined with ARCS (Attention, Relevance, Confidence, and Satisfaction) model into flipped classroom is proposed to improve the learning achievement of learners. The main features of this teaching model are: using ARCS theory to design related learning content, to enhance learners learning motivation and achievement;in the flipped classroom, the learners first understand the learning goal, follow the learning steps to learn, and finally complete the learning objectives. The C# programming language is used as the learning objective of this study, and 103 students from 2 classes of college freshman in Southern Taiwan University of Science and Technology are recruited as the study participant. In the experiment, the students are divided into a control group receiving traditional learning and an experimental group that employs the flipped classroom learning. To assess the proposed system, the teaming achievement is assessed by using the t-test for pre-test and post-test. The experiment shows that the system can indeed promote the learning outcome for the learners.

Students sometimes find it hard to learn new programming languages. They often confront unfamiliar programming terms that require the visualization of the processes that occur in the computer memory. Some researchers suggest that an enjoyable approach could be adapted even when learning difficult subjects. Studies have shown that applying Gamification elements in websites engage user's attention and thinking skills. Gamification refers to the use of game elements in a non-game context to increase engagement between humans and computers. There are various methodologies for educational game development, which combining instructional design with learning theories. The objective of this paper is to discuss a comprehensive methodology for developing and validating a Gamification-Based programming Learning Framework. The framework are constructed by integrating learning theories, game elements and programming learning requirements. Both qualitative and quantitative research methods are employed. The methodology are divided into three phases namely, analysis, innovation and validation. Each phase consists of steps and evaluation which must be completed before moving to the next phase. This methodology could be adapted by other researchers to develop a learning-based or game-based learning framework.

Research in high energy physics (HEP) requires huge amounts of computing and storage, putting strong constraints on the code speed and resource usage. To meet these requirements, a compiled high-performance language is typically used;while for physicists, who focus on the application when developing the code, better research productivity pleads for a high-level programming language. A popular approach consists of combining Python, used for the high-level interface, and C++, used for the computing intensive part of the code. A more convenient and efficient approach would be to use a language that provides both high-level programming and high-performance. The Julia programming language, developed at MIT especially to allow the use of a single language in research activities, has followed this path. In this paper the applicability of using the Julia language for HEP research is explored, covering the different aspects that are important for HEP code development: runtime performance, handling of large projects, interface with legacy code, distributed computing, training, and ease of programming. The study shows that the HEP community would benefit from a large scale adoption of this programming language. The HEP-specific foundation libraries that would need to be consolidated are identified. © 2023, The Author(s).

Domain-specific languages for network packet processing applications emphasize representing domain entities, such as packet protocol headers, and emphasize program speed, due to the relentless increase in packet transmission rates. In addition to these concerns, packetC makes app reliability a major aspect of its design, not least because in a single second a silent programming error can send a million packets into oblivion or send sensitive information to inappropriate destinations. Our contributions to constructing a reliable packet processing language are: (1) overhauling C-style structure bitfields to eliminate ambiguity, (2) constraining enumeration variables to guarantee type-safe properties, (3) providing novel reference variables for databases and regex sets and doing so in a way in which they cannot be dereferenced to inappropriate objects, and (4) offering a coercive try/catch exception handling scheme to ensure that system-thrown exceptions are wrapped within a try/catch structure for exception handling. In a broad sense our contribution is making reliability a central design criterion in designing a DSL for packet processing, an application domain in which performance has gotten much more attention.

Near novice programmers face transfer challenges when learning a second or subsequent programming language (PL). Although these transfer challenges are known, minimal attention is given to developing a pedagogic model that can guide educators in improving transfer in the classroom. We therefore propose a transfer pedagogy that uses implicit, explicit, and bridging techniques which align with the Model of programming language Transfer (MPLT) predictions. To evaluate this pedagogy, we conducted a between-subject study with a total of 62 second-year undergraduate students who were transitioning from Python to Java. The study was for the duration of the first two and a half weeks of the Java course. We provide the quantitative and qualitative results on the effects of this pedagogy on learning programming concepts in the new Java language. We also report the lecturer's views on using the pedagogy. The results show that students who used the transfer pedagogy performed significantly better in the post-test than the control group in most concepts. The qualitative results showed that 88% of the students appreciated the explicit teaching interventions, with some students noting they helped with avoiding transfer mistakes and made them understand concepts better. The lecturer also appreciated the value of the pedagogy, taking it as an opportunity to help students learn deeper programming concepts. However, they reported some challenges too. These findings suggest that the transfer pedagogy is beneficial and can be of value to second programming language learning.

The effect of different usage of the educational programming language in programming education on the programming anxiety and achievement

The abstract structure, logic, negative perceptions, and anxiety of programming are seen as obstacles to novice programmers. The importance of educational programming languages is increasing day by day in overcoming these obstacles. In this study, it was aimed to investigate the effect of educational programming language integration on academic achievement and programming anxiety level. The pretest-posttest test design without control group, which is one of the experimental methods, was used in the study, which was carried out on three groups consisting of the theory, practice and integration of the course into both theory and practice part. The groups determined by random sampling method consist of 87 people, 61 boys and 26 girls. Pretest-posttest method was used to determine academic success. During the application process, five performance tests were used to determined the change in success. The scale developed by Cheung (1990) in determining computer programming anxiety was adapted to Turkish by the validity and reliability study by the researcher and was used as pre-test and post-test. Variance and covariance analyzes were used to determine anxiety about academic success and programming, and the results of Kruskal-Wallis test analyzes were used for analysis of performance tests. It is concluded that educational programming languages can be used by integrating both the theory and practice of the course in order to increase academic success and in-class performance and reduce anxiety about computer programming.
