The present study introduces an Android based application that focuses on promoting students' learning experience when interacting with Lego Mindstorms Robotic Kit NXT. A thorough investigation of the current literature reveals that there are numerous applications attempting to overcome the limitations of Lego platform which, however, appear to only partially succeed in significantly improving children's engagement in fruitful learning. Their main limitations are that they either function on an elemental level or suffer from a general lack of creating effectively room for children to test their abilities and other curiosities. Aiming at confronting these limitations, the proposed android application, which is referred to as MyNXT, was created and presented. MyNXT offers direct access control along with the choice to program using simple linear logic through an easy and a user friendly environment with built in instructions for all ages. Concluding, the proposed application constitutes a stepping to an educating platform, which can facilitate the learning needs of children in contemporary times.

Creativity has long been suggested as an important factor in learning. In this paper, we present a preliminary study of creativity in an online programming learning environment. We operationalize creativity using an existing scheme for scoring it, and then measure it automatically based on the system log files. We analyze the data in order to explore the associations between creativity and personal/contextual variables. Creativity is associated with contextual variables and is not associated with personal variables. Directions for continuing this research are discussed.

This paper presents a new category that has been added to the classification of Kim and Ko (2017) for programming learning systems, namely the Online Coding Tutorial System (OCTS) category. In this current study, firstly, seven popular online coding tutorial systems have been selected to investigate how these systems taught learners and what their characteristics and features were. Secondly, from Kim and Ko's classification, one system has been selected from each category and analyzed across the identified characteristics of online coding tutorial systems to investigate whether any existing category in Kim and Ko's classification shares the same characteristics. As a result, it was found that online coding tutorial systems have adopted many of the features that have been identified in Kim and Ko's first category of interactive platforms, along with some aspects of their creative platforms and MOOCs. Therefore, online coding tutorial systems have been considered a new category of programming learning systems that includes several characteristics from other existing categories.

In recent years, Computer programming has become a critical subject, and it is a basic literacy in the digital age. However, learning programming skills is not an easy task as supported by many studies. On the other hand, many studies have concluded that student question generation has a positive effect on students' learning, but few studies have geared toward supporting its use in programming classes. Therefore, this study aimed to develop a programming learning system named Peer Interaction programming learning System based on a question generation strategy. The system was built by adding and intergrading learning assistance functions by system initiative into existing open-source Q&A system. The usability of the system was examined for an undergraduate computer science course: Introduction to Computer programming (n = 33). In this paper, we reported the design of the system and its user interface, identified several related systems, discussed our motivation and underlying teaching philosophy.

The overall goal of this research is to establish the methodology for analyzing learning history data of programming exercise in accordance with learning processes. To achieve this goal, we developed a theoretical method of sequential pattern mining specialized for learning histories in programming exercise. On the basis of this method, we designed a system for analyzing the programming learning history data. This system consists of functions that are responsible for collection of learning histories, generation of sequence from the collected learning histories, extraction of noteworthy patterns from a set of sequences, and acquisition of findings from the extracted patterns. This paper mainly describes the functions of the system and their implementation along with an overview of the sequential pattern mining method.

In programming learning, students have individual difficulties, and teachers need to grasp those difficulties and provide appropriate support for the students. However, since it is a heavy burden for teachers, a method to automatically estimate the learning situations of students is required. In this research, we developed a method that adopts the development of a machine learning model as an approach to achieve this purpose. This machine learning model outputs the estimated learning situation when the source code editing history of new students is input. As a result of evaluating the developed method, it was possible to estimate the correct learning situations with high accuracy of 98%. The applicability of this learning situation estimation method in practical lessons was shown.

This Research Full Paper presents a collection of evidences about the association between self-regulation variables and programming learning. Researchers have been investigating this thematic and despite the apparent benefits, it is necessary to summarize the published evidence and provide a new collection of them, which this study seeks to contribute. An observational investigation was performed in two countries with fifty-nine students, who had their SRL and programming learning metrics collected and correlated. Moreover, a systematic literature review was also conducted, and the existing evidence summarized. The results support an association between metacognitive and motivational regulatory strategies with programming learning but do not support for cognitive strategies. Our analysis shows a need for more studies to provide a solid body of knowledge on this thematic.

Building written feedback, pedagogically sound, standardized and flexible enough to accommodate students who may be in different stages and learning curves is a complex and laborious task In this paper, we describe a multinational case study involving diverse types of pedagogical feedback provided to Portuguese and Brazilian novice programming students. programming errors, especially logical ones, can be used as a consistent metric for assessing learning. The research done looks for an innovative form to define content of several types of feedback It also aims to create an efficient method for the discovery and mapping of students' logical programming errors. The results obtained so far using this approach are presented and analyzed.

How to foster not only Software programming Skill (SPS) but also Computational Thinking Ability (CTA) of students becomes more important. However, students cannot immediately understand learning problems and statuses in terms of SPS and CTA even though Scratch tool can facilitate the programming learning. Therefore, a scheme of Web-based learning Activity Integrated with Scratch Tool (WeLaS) is proposed to assist learners. In WeLaS, students can learn the programming concepts and knowledge by sequential learning content, hands-on practice the coding skills by embedded Scratch tool, address the task by online prompts, and reflect the learning status by diagnostic report. Consequently, WeLaS can be expected to assist students in achieving the high learning performance.

Children can learn programming using different tools. Understanding how the characteristics and features of each tool impact the learning effect will enhance learning. However, the impact of specific tools on the learning effect is unclear. In this study, we conducted a workshop to evaluate the characteristics and features of six tools on the learning effect. Our study reveals that the learning effect clearly differs between the six tools.
