learning programming is a difficult course because the students need to remember the various type of program's syntax, create complicated commands, and solve the errors that difficult to understand. Therefore using modern technology such as online learning, social media and educational games may support students to learn to programme. In this study, computer programming games, which are educational computer games simulating the compiler working with the scenarios of daily human life, were employed in the new approach called a blended learning digital game. The approach was designed by integrating traditional lecture-based learning model and the educational computer game. Quasi-experimental research was conducted to examine the effectiveness of the proposed approach by comparing to the traditional lecture-based learning approach. This research examined the learning achievement of male and female students who learn in different environments. This was based on the blended learning digital game approach and the traditional lecture-based learning approach. An analysis of 94 university students shows that using the game as a cognitive tool in part of the traditional lecture-based learning had significantly positive of C programming language achievement. While the new approach can support the students to learn C programming in both genders, it also supports the notion that students can achieve C programming language performance through the game, mainly when using the traditional lecture-based learning environment.

programming design sequence is one kind of problem-solving processes. It covers multiple cognitive levels of activities. In a typical programming design process, we must first recognize the nature of the problem, followed by analytical thinking and summarizing through logical reasoning to propose an algorithm. At last, translate the proposed algorithm to a founal programming language in order to solve the problem by using computer. However, most students are good at studying conceptual knowledge, and lack of logical analysis training. This study presents an adaptive problem-solving oriented programming learning system, which can classify learning problems in the learning process, and combine with case-based reasoning method to construction the best learning diagnostic model. When students construct learning knowledge through the proposed problem-solving process, the system will diagnose the learning difficulties of students according to the learning portfolios, and provide an adaptive real-time study guide mechanism for each specific student. In summary, the proposed system can encourage students to have a good manner and correct understanding in problem-solving, and help students develop professional programming abilities.

The paper introduces an architecture of the system for teaching and learning programming based on interactivity and modern educational approaches like gamification, microlearning, automated assessment, community learning, learning-by-doing, learning analytics, and personalization and presents design of the software architecture. Firstly, the required students' knowledge and skills are divided into several domains according to their relation to the more complex programming teaching topics. Subsequently, the paper presents ideas on which the system architecture is designed. The main part of the paper describes key modules and principles used in a design of the proposed system. The conclusion describes the structure of educational content divided into the levels, according to the system architecture.

This study suggests the effective learning programming method using the Wiki Community Systems. In an e-learning setting, it is hard to expect the growing learners' ability of thinking and collaboration when programming learning focuses on learning content. The Wiki Community systems we suggested, which are community-centered, however, can foster learners' ability of algorithm thinking through processing of sharing ideas and collaborating on a work with learners. We applied learning programming method using the Wiki Community systems to the fourth-grade elementary students. As a result, learners could share their ideas about solving problems and collaborate on the entire processes of learning. Furthermore, this system makes learners' knowledge for algorism to be more elaborate during learners are finding out the optimum algorithm and improve learners' thinking power.

The knowledge of programming consists of conceptual knowledge and strategic knowledge. Lack of problem-solving strategies is one of the major reasons why code learning is hard for many novice programmers. In this paper, we not only construct these two types of knowledge, but also construct the relationship of learning cases and e-portfolio for diagnosing the learning difficulties of each learner. Based on these constructed knowledge, we develop a learning diagnostic system using case-based reasoning method to give the learners feedback and suggestion in real time. We choose C as a first programming language for the beginners. The system is built on 3-tier client/server architecture and can run on various platforms such as Windows, Linux, OS X, and Android. There are two learning diagnostic stages to indicate novice programming mistakes about the conceptual programming knowledge and strategic programming knowledge, to help learners recognize, diagnose, and recover from programming errors.

This research aims to realize a novel method for learning history analysis based on the learning processes in programming exercise classes. This paper proposes the sequential pattern mining method specialized for analysis of learning histories of programing learning. This paper initially describes a data processing method which investigates learning transitions as sequences based on the analyses of learners' source codes and compile errors generated in their exercises. Next, this paper describes an analysis support tool. This tool assists collection of learning histories, generation of sequence based on analysis of the histories, extraction of the noteworthy patterns based on SPADE algorithm and acquisition of findings from the extracted patterns. This tool enables to effectively analyze the relationships between learning processes in programming exercises and learning situations. Such analysis can contribute to practical grasping of learning situations in accordance with learning process and acquisition of advanced findings based on it.

The effect of self-regulated programming learning on undergraduate students' academic performance and motivation

Purpose The purpose of this study was to investigate the effect of self-regulated programming learning on undergraduate students' academic performance and motivation compared to traditional methods. Design/methodology/approach This study was conducted with an explanatory sequential mixed method. Participants consist of 31 undergraduate students studying in the department of computer and instructional technologies education. The students were separated into two groups as experimental (n = 15) and control (n = 16) in the robotic programming course. Academic performance tests, programming motivation scale and interview form were used as data collection tools. After collecting quantitative data, interviews were conducted with the students regarding their academic performance and motivation. Findings The results indicated that the self-regulated programming learning process can contribute positively to students' academic performance and motivation compared to traditional methods. Students stated that self-regulated learning strategies can positively affect their academic performance and motivation. Originality/value In this study, a self-regulated learning support system was designed to encourage students to use self-regulated learning strategies. This study has the potential to contribute to the gap in the literature, especially as a study of adapting the phased model of self-regulated learning to programming teaching. Instructors can use the self-regulating programming learning framework by adapting it to different disciplines.

programming has recently become taught more widely. As teachers often need to correspond with a large number of students, they have difficulty grasping individual student learning situations. Therefore, we previously developed a method to estimate the learning situations of students from the source code editing history that reflects their trial-and-error processes. However, this method burdens the teachers by requiring them to prepare a large amount of training data. In this paper, we present Everest: an exercise environment for programming to reduce the burden of training data creation. In Everest, training data is created through student reflection. As a result, introducing Everest can reduce the data creation burden on teachers.

This article examines US K-12 computing teacher needs for a programming learning system. We surveyed 39 K-12 teachers about the necessity of programming learning system features. We found that teachers needed to view student code remotely, student code auto-save, differentiation of student assignments, and a tutorial library for students to learn about the programming environment. In addition to rating feature usefulness, we also asked teachers to list features or needs that the survey did not address. Through qualitative responses, we found that teachers wanted cheating prevention and detection, the ability to freeze and project code onto student screens, and student and classroom-level analytics. We also compare the needs of teachers who teach computing as the main subject in their classroom to the needs of teachers who integrate computing into another discipline. This research can inform the development of programming learning systems to better support teachers and their students.

This paper shows how a teaching innovation project is being developed using GitHub to support laboratory and autonomous programming assignments/tasks as part of the Industrial Engineering course at the University of Almeria. A Github organization has been created where not only assignment instructions are given but also where students can collaborate by engaging in real-time teamwork activities focused on problem based learning while working in a professional programming environment. The students' work can be easily controlled and monitored using the commit tracking system, thus facilitating the assessment of large groups.
