A consistency and consensus-based method to group decision making with interval linguistic preference relations

Preference relations are a powerful tool to address decision-making problems. In some situations, because of the complexity of decision-making problems and the inherent uncertainty, the decision makers cannot express their preferences by using numerical values. Interval linguistic preference relations, which are more reliable and informative for the decision-makers' preferences, are a good choice to cope with this issue. Just as with the other types of preference relations, the consistency and consensus analysis is very importance to ensure the reasonable ranking order by using interval linguistic preference relations. Considering this situation, this paper introduces a consistency concept for interval linguistic preference relations. To measure the consistency of interval linguistic preference relations, a consistency measure is defined. Then, a consistency-based programming model is built, by which the consistent linguistic preference relations with respect to each object can be obtained. To cope with the inconsistency case, two models for deriving the adjusted consistent linguistic preference relations are constructed. Then, a consistency-based programming model to estimate the missing values is built. After that, we present a group consensus index and present some of its desirable properties. Furthermore, a group consensus-based model to determine the weights of the decision makers with respect to each object is established. Finally, an approach to group decision making with interval linguistic preference relations is developed, which is based on the consistency and consensus analysis. Meanwhile, the associated numerical examples are offered to illustrate the application of the procedure.

A group decision making method with intuitionistic triangular fuzzy preference relations and its application

This paper aims to offer an intuitionistic triangular fuzzy group decision making method by preference relations. For this purpose, the concept of intuitionistic triangular fuzzy preference relations (ITFPRs) is first offered. Then, an additive consistency concept for ITFPRs is introduced. Meanwhile, a programming model is built to check the consistency of ITFPRs. Considering the case where incomplete ITFPRs are obtained, two programming models are constructed, which aim at maximizing the consistency and minimizing the uncertainty of missing information. To achieve the goals of the minimum total adjustment and the smallest number of adjusted elements, two programming models are established to repair inconsistent ITFPRs. In addition, the weights of decision makers are considered, and the consensus levels of individual ITFPRs are studied to ensure the representativeness of decision results. When individual ITFPRs do not meet the consensus requirement, a programming model to reach the consensus threshold is constructed, which permits different intuitionistic triangular fuzzy variables (ITFVs) to have different adjustments and minimizes the total adjustment. Finally, a group decision making algorithm with ITFPRs is proposed, and its feasibility and efficiency are demonstrated through an example of evaluating the intelligent traditional Chinese medicine decocting centers.

A uniform approach for programming distributed heterogeneous computing systems

Large-scale compute clusters of heterogeneous nodes equipped with multi-core CPUs and GPUs are getting increasingly popular in the scientific community. However, such systems require a combination of different programming paradigms making application development very challenging. In this article we introduce libWater, a library-based extension of the OpenCL programming model that simplifies the development of heterogeneous distributed applications. libWater consists of a simple interface, which is a transparent abstraction of the underlying distributed architecture, offering advanced features such as inter-context and inter-node device synchronization. It provides a runtime system which tracks dependency information enforced by event synchronization to dynamically build a DAG of commands, on which we automatically apply two optimizations: collective communication pattern detection and device-host-device copy removal. We assess libWater's performance in three compute clusters available from the Vienna Scientific Cluster, the Barcelona Supercomputing Center and the University of Innsbruck, demonstrating improved performance and scaling with different test applications and configurations. Colombo: Lightweight middleware for service-oriented computing

Colombo is a lightweight platform for developing, deploying, and executing service-oriented applications. It provides optimized, native runtime support for the service-oriented-computing model, as opposed to the approach of layering service-oriented applications on a legacy runtime. This approach allows Colombo to provide high runtime performance, a small footprint, and simplified application development and deployment models. The Colombo runtime natively supports the full Web Services (WS) stack, providing transactional, reliable, and secure interactions among services. It defines a multilanguage service programming model that supports, among others, Java (TM) and Business Process Execution Language for Web Services (BPEL4WS) service composition, and offers a deployment and discovery model fully based on declarative service descriptions (Web Service Description Language [WSDL] and WS-Policy). In this paper we describe these and other aspects of the architecture, design principles, and capabilities of the Colombo platform.

Ordinal-cardinal consensus analysis for large-scale group decision making with uncertain self-confidence

Consensus analysis is necessary for large-scale group decision making (LSGDM) for ensuring reasonable decision results. This paper offers a new method for LSGDM with uncertain self-confidence that follows ordinal-cardinal consensus analysis. For this purpose, a new interval ranking method is first proposed to compare alternatives. Then, an improved ordinal clustering method on criteria is introduced using the deviation between individual ranking positions. In view of opinion deviation, uncertain self-confidence deviation, and ranking deviation, the weights of decision makers (DMs) are defined. Similarly, the weights of clusters are determined by further combining cluster cardinality. Further, an ordinal-cardinal consensus procedure is offered, which contains two algorithms: the first algorithm is about the ordinal consensus improvement in view of three aspects: ranking adjustment, opinion adjustment, and uncertain self-confidence;the second algorithm studies the cardinal consensus improvement under the ordinal consensus requirement, which also mainly contains three aspects: opinion adjustment, the number of adjusted judgments, and uncertain self-confidence. Moreover, a new algo-rithm for LSGDM is presented. Finally, an example is provided to check the feasibility and efficiency of the new method, and a comparison analysis is also made.

The consumer's view of a universal information appliance (UIA) is a personal device, such as a PDA (personal digital assistant) or a wearable computer that can interact with any application, access any information store, or remotely operate any electronic device. The technologist's view of the UIA is a portable computer communicating over a bi-directional wireless link to an elaborate software system through which all programs, information stores, and electronic devices can export their interfaces to the UIA. Using an exported interface, the UIA can interoperate with the exporting entity, whether a home security system a video cassette recorder corporate application, or an automobile navigation system. Furthermore, interfaces presented by the UIA can be tailored to the user's context, such as the user's preferences, behavior, and current surroundings. The UIA programming model supports dynamic interface style and content triggered on activity detected from the user's real-world and software context. in this paper we describe the design and first implementation of a UIA, a PDA that, through a wireless link, can interact with any program, access any database, or direct most electronic devices through a remote interface. The UIA model uses ISM's TSpaces software package as the interface delivery mechanism and resource database, and as the network communication glue. TSpaces supports communication between the UIA and any peer over a dual-mode wireless link. Using a popular application example, we present a generalized architecture in which the UIA is the mobile user's software portal for interoperating with any peer: another UIA, a common network service, a legacy application, or an electronic device.

A Consistency-Based Method to Decision Making with Triangular Fuzzy Multiplicative Preference Relations

Triangular fuzzy multiplicative preference relations (TFMPRs) enable decision makers to apply triangular fuzzy numbers to denote their preferences, which can express their vagueness and fuzziness. Consistency analysis is an important research topic that can guarantee logical ranking order. Considering previous research regarding the consistency of TFMPRs, several issues and limitations exist with these relations. The researches cannot cope well with certain situations, such as unacceptably consistent TFMPRs and incomplete TFMPRs. In this paper, a new consistency definition for TFMPRs is defined that can overcome the issues in the previous concepts. Next, several desirable properties of the definition are discussed, and the relationship between the new definition and two existing ones is presented. A linear goal programming model is also built to judge the consistency of TFMPRs, and a method is introduced to obtain an acceptably consistent TFMPR from an inconsistent one. Furthermore, several goal programming models are constructed to estimate missing values in an incomplete TFMPR. Finally, a decision-making method with TFMPRs is developed. Illustrative examples are offered to demonstrate the concrete application of the developed procedure, and a comparison analysis is also made.

THE GF11 PARALLEL COMPUTER

GF11 is a parallel computer operational at IBM's T.J. Watson Research Center. It is based on the SIMD (Single Instruction Multiple Data) model of parallel computing. GF11 attains its peak execution rate of 11.3 GigaFlops by using 566 identical processing elements, each capable of delivering 20 MegaFlops. Each processor has its own 64 Kb static RAM that can access a 32-bit word on each floating point operation, a 2 Mb dynamic RAM that operates at one fourth of the SRAM speed, and a 1 Kb register file that provides four accesses per floating point operation. The processors communicate through a 576x576 Benes network, organized as three stages of 24x24 crossbar switches. The network provides 11.3 Gb/sec of communication bandwidth to the processors and allows the processors to dynamically reconfigure themselves into arrays of various dimensions and sizes or other interesting interconnection patterns such as a tree, hypercube, etc. This reconfiguration can take place on every word transfer without sacrificing the bandwidth. GF11 has several architectural enhancements to circumvent the limitations of the standard SIMD model such as the ability to perform multiple operations in every instruction and the ability to modify the operations occurring within individual processors based on processor specific data. Preliminary benchmarking efforts on some applications indicate that near peak performance can be sustained on most applications, including some that were previously believed to be ill suited for SIMD machines. Minimal restructuring of programs and algorithms is required for achieving this performance. The architecture of GF11 is summarized in this paper and the implementations of Finite Element analysis, LU decomposition, Gaussian Elimination, and Fast Fourier Transform are discussed to illustrate GF11's ability to deliver good performance with minor program restructuring.

Optimal land allocation to crop production in different decision priorities and water availability scenarios: East Azerbaijan province of Iran

Optimal cropping pattern of Maragheh-Bonab plain was determined in different decision priorities (from viewpoint of farmers and experts) and annually water availability scenarios [60, 80 and 100 MCM (million cubic meters)/year]. Goal programming model was applied to the optimization of cropping pattern with considering eight goals. In the optimal cropping pattern from viewpoint of farmers, water consumption was reduced compared to existing condition about 42%, 32%, and 3% at 60, 80, and 100 MCM/year scenarios, respectively. While, from viewpoint of experts, this reduction was about 55%, 32%, and 32% for 60, 80, and 100 MCM/year scenarios, respectively. At 60 MCM/year scenario, total net return was calculated lower than the existing cropping pattern about 11% and 45% from the viewpoint of farmers and experts, respectively. However, optimization at 80 and 100 MCM/year scenarios, increased total net return compared to existing condition about 14% and 24% from the viewpoint of farmers and 14% and 14% from the viewpoint of experts, respectively. In the optimal cropping patterns, despite lower water consumption, the amount of net return, economic water productivity, economic energy, and land productivity increased against a decrease in employment, global warming potential, and environmental impacts of pesticides in the whole area.

LOCATING CONCENTRATORS IN A COMPUTER NETWORK WITH MULTIPLE COVERAGE FOR TERMINALS

This paper deals with the problem of locating concentrators in a computer communications network where the terminals could have multiple concentrator coverage. A mathematical programming model is developed. The objective is to maximize the benefits of having multiple concentrator connections for terminals while simultaneously minimizing communication costs as well as set up and operating costs for the concentrators subject to capacity constraints. A Lagrangian relaxation of the problem is presented, and a solution procedure based on subgradient optimization is developed. Computational results indicate that this solution procedure is very effective with mean gaps between the best feasible solution value and upper bound less than 0.5%.
