Ubiquitous deployment of cameras and recent advances in video analytics enable a new class of applications, situation awareness using camera networks. The application class includes surveillance, traffic monitoring, and assisted living that autonomously generate actionable knowledge from a large number of camera streams. Despite technological advances, developing a large-scale situation awareness application still remains a challenge due to the programming complexity, highly dynamic workloads, and latency-sensitive quality of service. To solve the problem, my research topic concerns developing a programming model and a runtime system to support large-scale situation awareness applications on camera networks. The programming model requires a minimal set of domain-specific handlers from the domain experts, allowing them to focus on the algorithmic aspect of situation awareness applications rather than the details of distributed programming. The runtime system provides automatic resource management using smart cameras and the cloud for handling dynamic workloads and ensuring latency-sensitive quality of services.

Concurrency-related bugs may happen when multiple threads access shared data and interleave in ways that do not correspond to any sequential execution. Their absence is not guaranteed by the traditional notion of "data race" freedom. We present a new definition of data races in terms of 11 problematic interleaving scenarios, and prove that it is complete by showing that any execution not exhibiting these scenarios is serializable for a chosen set of locations. Our definition subsumes the traditional definition of a data race as well as high-level data races such as stale-value errors and inconsistent views. We also propose a language feature called atomic sets of locations, which lets programmers specify the existence of consistency properties between fields in objects, without specifying the properties themselves. We use static analysis to automatically infer those points in the code where synchronization is needed to avoid data races under our new definition. An important benefit of this approach is that, in general, far fewer annotations are required than is the case with existing approaches such as synchronized blocks or atomic sections. Our implementation successfully inferred the appropriate synchronization for a significant subset of Java's Standard Collections framework.

OpenACC is a high-level directive-based parallel programming model that can manage the sophistication of heterogeneity in architectures and abstract it from the users. The portability of the model across CPUs and accelerators has gained the model a wide variety of users. This means it is also crucial to analyze the reliability of the compilers' implementations. To address this challenge, the OpenACC Validation and Verification team has proposed a validation testsuite to verify the OpenACC implementations across various compilers with an infrastructure for a more streamlined execution. This paper will cover the following aspects: (a) the new developments since the last publication on the testsuite, (b) outline the use of the infrastructure, (c) discuss tests that highlight our workflow process, (d) analyze the results from executing the testsuite on various systems, and (e) outline future developments.

Storage Class Memory (SCM) is emerging as a viable alternative to traditional DRAM, alleviating its scalability limits, both in terms of capacity and energy consumption, while being non-volatile. Hence, SCM has the potential to become a universal memory, blurring well-known storage hierarchies. However, along with opportunities, SCM brings many challenges. In this tutorial we will dissect SCM challenges and provide an in-depth view of existing programming models that circumvent them, as well as novel data structures that stem from these models. We will also elaborate on fail-safety testing challenges - an often overlooked, yet important topic. Finally, we will discuss SCM emulation techniques for end-toend testing of SCM-based software components. In contrast to surveys investigating the use of SCM in database systems, this tutorial is designed as a programming guide for researchers and professionals interested in leveraging SCM in database systems.

This paper presents a framework to design a shared memory multiprocessor on a programmable platform. We propose a complete flow, composed by a programming model and a template architecture. Our framework permits to write a parallel application by using a shared memory model. It deals with the consistency of shared data, with no need of hardware coherence protocol, but uses a software model to properly synchronize the local copies with the shared memory image. This idea can be applied both to a scratchpad-based architecture or a cache-based one. The architecture is synthesizable with standard IPs, such as the softcores and interconnect elements, which may be found in any commercial FPGA toolset.

Irregular workloads are typically bottlenecked by the memory system. These workloads often use sparse data representations, e.g., compressed sparse row/column (CSR/CSC), to conserve space at the cost of complicated, irregular traversals. Such traversals access large volumes of data and offer little locality for caches and conventional prefetchers to exploit. This paper presents Prodigy, a low-cost hardware-software co-design solution for intelligent prefetching to improve the memory latency of several important irregular workloads. Prodigy targets irregular workloads including graph analytics, sparse linear algebra, and fluid mechanics that exhibit two specific types of data-dependent memory access patterns. Prodigy adopts a "best of both worlds" approach by using static program information from software, and dynamic run-time information from hardware. The core of the system is the Data Indirection Graph (DIG)-a proposed compact representation used to express program semantics such as the layout and memory access patterns of key data structures. The DIG representation is agnostic to a particular data structure format and is demonstrated to work with several sparse formats including CSR and CSC. Program semantics are automatically captured with a compiler pass, encoded as a DIG, and inserted into the application binary. The DIG is then used to program a low-cost hardware prefetcher to fetch data according to an irregular algorithm's data structure traversal pattern. We equip the prefetcher with a flexible prefetching algorithm that maintains timeliness by dynamically adapting its prefetch distance to an application's execution pace. We evaluate the performance, energy consumption, and transistor cost of Prodigy using a variety of algorithms from the GAP, HPCG, and NAS benchmark suites. We compare the performance of Prodigy against a non-prefetching baseline as well as state-of-the-art prefetchers. We show that by using just 0.8KB of storage, Prodigy outperforms a non

Greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions need to be reduced in order to avoid dangerous climate change. There are a number of ways of achieving emissions reductions and agriculture can play an important role. Some involve reducing emissions and enhancing sequestration from agricultural production and yet others involve substituting low emitting products for higher emitting products. In this dissertation we will investigate agricultural mitigation strategies in terms of a countrywide INDC and later in terms of replacing petroleum-based fuels with biofuel produced from agricultural feedstocks. In the latter case we will focus on efficiency enhancement by investigating the key logistics questions involved with moving bulky feedstocks to facilities. In the first essay, a framework is employed that can provide a sector level evaluation and suggestion for agricultural mitigation policies in INDCs (Intended Nationally Determined Contributions), taking into account strategy interactions and food market effects by building a quadratic, price endogenous programming model. In the case study of Vietnam, the model provides the optimal portfolios of the INDC options across different mitigation targets/incentives. Significant differences between economic and technical potential of mitigation policies are discovered. According to the assessment of mitigation policies on food market prices, Vietnam’s agriculture can accomplish unconditional contribution claimed in the INDC with modest impacts on its food markets. The results also suggest that delaying mitigation effort will increase the total costs of achieving the INDC commitments especially when the total amount of mitigation is not large. In the second essay, we turn to the issues of supply chain efficiency in moving agricultural feedstocks from points of production to biorefineries. In the domain of IoT a major objective is the interconnection of a variety of devices with higher level applications. Therefore, several IoT middleware systems have been developed. These IoT integration middleware systems are heterogeneous, e.g., in terms of the supported transport protocols. Thus, IoT environments often differ due to the utilized middleware. As a result, by deploying applications in different environments the communication clients on the application side have to be adjusted manually. This leads to a greater development effort for each deployment and hampers the application's portability. In this paper, we present a generic driver injection concept to enable the development of portable IoT applications and the automated deployment in different environments without manual adaptation efforts. For this, a programming model and a deployment modeling concept are introduced. We demonstrate the feasibility of our approach with a TOSCA-based prototype.

This paper is to propose a systematic evaluation for paint messages among C++/CLI controls, e.g., form, button, and picture box. Specifically, the occurrences of such messages and priorities of their processing are investigated to enhance the design of programming models for graphical user interface (GUI). To demonstrate the effectiveness of this approach, those models are progressively integrated with processing paint messages from various controls, in a graphically-demanding C++/CLI project.
