High-Level Heterogeneous and Hierarchical Parallel Systems (HLPGPU) aims to bring together researchers and practitioners to present new results and ongoing work on those aspects of high-level programming relevant, or specific to general-purpose computing on graphics processing units (GPGPUs) and new architectures. The 2016 HLPGPU symposium was an event co-located with the HiPEAC conference in Prague, Czech Republic. HLPGPU is targeted at high-level parallel techniques, including programming models, libraries and languages, algorithmic skeletons, refactoring tools and techniques for parallel patterns, tools and systems to aid parallel programming, heterogeneous computing, timing analysis and statistical performance models.

From "Think Like a Vertex" to "Think Like a Graph"

To meet the challenge of processing rapidly growing graph and network data created by modern applications, a number of distributed graph processing systems have emerged, such as Pregel and GraphLab. All these systems divide input graphs into partitions, and employ a "think like a vertex" programming model to support iterative graph computation. This vertex-centric model is easy to program and has been proved useful for many graph algorithms. However, this model hides the partitioning information from the users, thus prevents many algorithm-specific optimizations. This often results in longer execution time due to excessive network messages (e.g. in Pregel) or heavy scheduling overhead to ensure data consistency (e.g. in GraphLab). To address this limitation, we propose a new "think like a graph" programming paradigm. Under this graph-centric model, the partition structure is opened up to the users, and can be utilized so that communication within a partition can bypass the heavy message passing or scheduling machinery. We implemented this model in a new system, called Giraph++, based on Apache Giraph, an open source implementation of Pregel. We explore the applicability of the graph-centric model to three categories of graph algorithms, and demonstrate its flexibility and superior performance, especially on well-partitioned data. For example, on a web graph with 118 million vertices and 855 million edges, the graph-centric version of connected component detection algorithm runs 63X faster and uses 204X fewer network messages than its vertex- centric counterpart.

Concurrency-Aware Object-Oriented programming with Roles

Object-oriented programming has been effective in reducing code complexity in sequential programs, but in current practice, concurrent programs still present a number of challenges. We present here a model of object-oriented programming that identifies concurrent tasks and the relationship between objects and tasks, effectively making objects concurrency-aware. This awareness is formalized in a parallel programming model where every object plays a role in every task (e.g., the READONLY role). When an object is shared with a new task, it adapts to the new sharing pattern by changing its roles, and therefore its behavior, i.e., the operations that can be performed with this object. This mechanism can be leveraged to prevent interfering accesses from concurrently executing tasks, and therefore makes parallel execution deterministic. To this end, we present a role-based programming language that includes several novel concepts (role transitions, guarding, slicing) to enable practical, object-oriented deterministic parallel programming. We show that this language can be used to safely implement programs with a range of different parallel patterns. The implementations to 8 widely used programming problems achieve substantial parallel speedups and demonstrate that this approach delivers performance roughly on par with manually synchronized implementations.

This paper reports the results of a study designed to evaluate the shipping and production scheduling procedures used by a large manufacturer of radiators for the transportation industry, and to recommend possible improvements. Evaluation of current and suggested scheduling procedures was based upon the three management goals of: (1) using production facilities efficiently, (2) controlling finished goods inventory levels while providing adequate delivery service, and (3) coordinating production schedules with shipping schedules so as to minimize materials handling time and corresponding costs.

Adequate and desirable connections between suppliers and customers necessitate an appropriate flow of information. Therefore, a promising and proper data collaboration in the supply chain is of tremendous significance. Thus, the study's main objective is to provide multiple objective programming models under uncertain conditions to assess the performance of suppliers. To meet that aim, a case study for the reliability assessment of the presented model is carried out. That section is associated with supply chain visibility (SCV). Likewise, the likelihood of unpredicted and undesirable incidents involving supply chain risk (SCR) is taken into consideration. The intimate relation between visibility and risk of the supply chain is deemed efficient for the performance of the supply chain. Incoherence in maximization and minimization of SCR and SCV and other factors, including costs, capacity, or demand, necessitates multiple objective programming models to assess suppliers' performance to accomplish the before-mentioned aims. The study's results indicate the high reliability of the proposed model. Besides, the numeral results reveal that decision-makers in selecting suppliers mainly decrease SCR and then attempt to enhance SCV. In conclusion, the provided model in the study can be a desirable model for analyzing and estimating supplier performance with SCR and SCV simultaneously.

This paper shows how a stochastic programming model for least-cost feed formulations under a probabilistic protein constraint and other linear restrictions can be solved by using an iterative quadratic programming technique. To address this question, discussion is presented mathematically and verbally upon mathematical programming sector models in which both price and quantity are endogenous variables. Discussion is also presented upon the usefulness of the modeling approach for policy analysis. Selected bibliograpic citations' use of the approach in policy analysis are given. Engineering sustainable cyber-physical-social systems demand a transdisciplinary approach. Within an arbitrary domain, many systems, including those of the physical and cyber categories, may already be in-situ;however, heterogeneity permeates such systems, for example, differing protocols, data formats, among others. Heterogeneity is not a deliberate feature of an arbitrary system;rather, it is the cumulative result of pragmatic decisions that were made during design and is driven by many different factors, some of which may not be technological. Nonetheless, heterogeneity represents a critical obstacle for system designers as they seek to harness and integrate diverse system elements to deliver innovative services. This obstacle is acutely manifested in cyber-physical-social systems when collecting and fusing data for evidence-based decision-making;social and human-derived data exacerbate the problem. This paper proposes a programming model for fusing information sources in cyber-physical-social systems. The efficacy of the model is validated via a usability analysis.

Mexican fresh tomato exports in the North American market: A case study of the effects of productivity on competitiveness

The North American market for fresh tomatoes (Lycopersicon escolentum Mill.) involves a complicated web of bilateral trading relationships between the United States, Mexico and Canada. Trade in fresh tomatoes between the three countries has changed significantly in recent years. In particular, Mexico's share of total US fresh tomato imports from all countries decreased from 93 to 88%, while Canada's share of US fresh tomato imports increased from 3 to 11% between 1996 and 2009. Mexico's declining competitive position in the US fresh tomato market is also evidenced by the fact that the Mexican share of combined Mexico-Canada exports to the United States decreased from 97% to 89% between 1996 and 2009. A spatial and inter-temporal model was used to analyze the impact of increased Mexican tomato yields on the North American fresh tomato market. Results indicate that for the average year between 2005 and 2008, 20% higher yields would have resulted in a 15.1% increase in Mexico's tomato production and a 28.9% increase in fresh tomato exports from Mexico to the United States. As a result of higher Mexican tomato sector productivity, Canadian and US producers' shares of the US fresh tomato market would decrease and Mexico's would increase from 35.0 to 41.9%. The model shows that Mexico's share of US fresh tomato imports from both Mexico and Canada would grow from 88.1 to 90.3% as a result of the increased productivity. These results lead to the recommendation that increasing yields of this important export crop are key to maintaining and increasing the North American market competitiveness of Mexican-produced fresh tomatoes.

WATER MARKETS AND WATER-QUALITY

In addition to improving the allocative efficiency of water use, water markets may reduce irrigation-related water quality problems. This potential benefit is examined with a nonlinear programming model developed to simulate agricultural decision-making in a drainage problem area in California's San Joaquin Valley. Results indicate that a 30% drainage goal is achievable through improvements in irrigation practices and changes in cropping patterns induced by a water market. Although water markets will not generally achieve a least-cost solution, they may be a practical alternative to economically efficient, but informationally intensive, environmental policies such as Pigouvian taxes.
