Applications written solely in OpenCL or CUDA cannot execute on a cluster as a whole. Most previous approaches that extend these programming models to clusters are based on a common idea: designating a centralized host node and coordinating the other nodes with the host for computation. However, the centralized host node is a serious performance bottleneck when the number of nodes is large. In this paper, we propose a scalable and distributed OpenCL framework called SnuCL-D for large-scale clusters. SnuCL-D's remote device virtualization provides an OpenCL application with an illusion that all compute devices in a cluster are confined in a single node. To reduce the amount of control-message and data communication between nodes, SnuCL-D replicates the OpenCL host program execution and data in each node. We also propose a new OpenCL host API function and a queueing optimization technique that significantly reduce the overhead incurred by the previous centralized approaches. To show the effectiveness of SnuCL-D, we evaluate SnuCL-D with a microbenchmark and eleven benchmark applications on a large-scale CPU cluster and a medium-scale GPU cluster.

The TEXTAROSSA project aims to bridge the technology gaps that exascale computing systems will face in the near future in order to overcome their performance and energy efficiency challenges. This project provides solutions for improved energy efficiency and thermal control, seamless integration of heterogeneous accelerators in HPC multi-node platforms, and new arithmetic methods. Challenges are tacked through a co-design approach to heterogeneous HPC solutions, supported by the integration and extension of HW and SW IPs, programming models, and tools derived from European research.

EnviroSuite: An Environmentally Immersive programming Framework for Sensor Networks

Sensor networks open a new frontier for embedded-distributed computing. Paradigms for sensor network programming-in-the-large have been identified as a significant challenge toward developing large-scale applications. Classical programming languages are too low-level. This paper presents the design, implementation, and evaluation of EnviroSuite, a programming framework that introduces a new paradigm, called environmentally immersive programming, to abstract distributed interactions with the environment. Environmentally immersive programming refers to an object-based programming model in which individual objects represent physical elements in the external environment. It allows the programmer to think directly in terms of environmental abstractions. EnviroSuite provides language primitives for environmentally immersive programming that map transparently into a support library of distributed algorithms for tracking and environmental monitoring. We show how nesC code of realistic applications is significantly simplified using EnviroSuite and demonstrate the resulting system performance on Mica2 and XSM platforms. © 2006, ACM. Increasing variety and affordability of multi- and many-core embedded architectures can pose both a challenge and opportunity to developers of high performance computing applications. In this paper we present a case study where we develop and evaluate a unified parallel approach to a signal-correlation algorithm,currently in-use in a commercial/industrial locating system. We utilize both HPX C++ and CUDA runtimes to achieve scalable code for current embedded multi- and many-core architectures (NVIDIA Tegra, Intel Broadwell M, Arm Cortex A-15). We also compare our approach onto traditional high-performance hardware as well as a native embedded many-core variant. To increase the accuracy of our performance analysis we introduce dedicated performance model. The results show that our approach is feasible and enables us to harness the advantages of modern micro-server architectures, but also indicates that there are limitations to some of the currently existing many-core embedded architectures, that can lead to traditional hardware being superior both in efficiency and absolute performance.

It has been known for some time that groups as index domains of indexable container types provide a unified view for "geometric" (grids) and "hierarchic" (trees) spatial structures. This conceptual unification is the starting point of further generalizations. In this paper we present a new kind of index domains that combine both kinds of structure in a single index domain. Together with the "structured-universe approach", these new index domains constitute a framework for an expressive description of adaptive multi-grid discretizations and algorithms.

We present MPOpt-Cell, an architecture-aware framework for high-productivity development and efficient execution of stream applications on the CELL BE Processor. It enables developers to quickly build Synchronous Data Flow (SDF) applications using a simple and intuitive programming interface based on a set of compiler directives that capture the key abstractions of SDF. The compiler backend and system runtime efficiently manage hardware resources.

This paper presents a programming model approach that explicitly addresses the programmability of scientific code by annotating imperative code with its algorithmic structural behavior. This information is used to create hierarchical structures, as opposed to the flat structure that most programming models work with, which allows sound code transformation at any level of the code, adjusting the granularity of parallelization simultaneously with other parameters to better exploit the available hardware resources.

Exascale platforms require support for resilience capabilities due to increasing numbers of components and associated error rates. In this paper, we present a new directive-based approach to perform application-level checkpoint/restart in a simplified and portable way. We propose a solution based on compiler directives, similar to OpenMP, that allows users to easily specify the state of the application that has to be saved and restored. This leaves the tedious and error-prone serialization and deserialization activities to our library, which relies on SCR/FTI to perform scalable and efficient I/O operations. Our results, based on several benchmarks and two large applications, reveal no additional overhead compared to the direct use of FTI and SCR checkpoint/restart libraries. Apart from that, our portable approach significantly increases the programmability reducing the number of code lines required to perform checkpoint/restart in an average of approximate to 82% and approximate to 94%, for FTI and SCR respectively.

A subset of the Parallel Research Kernels (PRK), simplified parallel application patterns, are used to study the behavior of different runtimes implementing the PGAS programming model. The goal of this paper is to show that such an approach is practical and effective as we approach the exascale era. Our experimental results indicate that for the kernels we selected, MPI with two-sided communications outperforms the PGAS runtimes SHMEM, UPC, Grappa, and MPI-3 with RMA extensions.

Previous studies into performance portability have typically analysed a single application (and its various implementations) in isolation. In this study we explore the wider landscape of performance portability by considering a number of applications from across the space of dwarfs, written in multiple parallel programming models, and across a diverse set of architectures. We apply rigorous performance portability metrics, as defined by Pennycook et al [1]. We believe this is the broadest and most rigorous performance portability study to date, representing a far reaching exploration of the state of performance portability that is achievable today. We will present a summary of the performance portability of each application and programming model across our diverge range of twelve computer architectures, including six different server CPUs from five different vendors, five different GPUs from two different vendors, and one vector architecture. We will conclude with an analysis of the performance portability of key programming models in general, across different application spaces as well across differing architectures, allowing us to comment on more general performance portability principles.
