In the last decades biology scientists have relied on their own resources and tools to run the experiments and store the results of the analysis. However, the explosion of big data and the growing availability of computational methods find an obstacle in the lack of computational and storage resources. Cloud computing platforms are emerging as potential solution to overcome these limitations, but adaptation of the applications to enable scientific users to benefit from resources acquired on demand is a complex process requiring multidisciplinary expertise. The EUBrazilOpenBio initiative is implementing an e-Infrastructure that provides biodiversity community with a rich set of computational and data resources exploiting existing cloud technologies from EU and Brazil. This paper presents the implementation of one of the two use cases selected, the environmental niche modeling by means of implementing such workflow through the COMPSs framework and its deployment on the EUBrazil OpenBio platform. The proposed approach has been evaluated on a Cloud testbed managed by the VENUS-C middleware.

Pervasive Grid computing platforms are composed of a variety of xed and mobile nodes, interconnected through multiple wireless and wired network technologies. Pervasive Grid Applications must adapt themselves to the state of their surrounding environment which includes environmental data (e.g. collected from sensors) and the state of the used resources (e.g. network or node states). Adaptation is especially important if we consider complex High-Performance Pervasive Grid applications, such as intelligent transportation and emergency management. In this paper we investigate how to de ne adaptivity for complex Pervasive Grid applications by providing multiple versions of application parallel modules. The versions are de ned by exploiting different sequential algorithms and parallelization techniques. We introduce performance analysis tools for versions, which allow us to de ne specific selection policies of the best version to be executed, depending on the context. We show how each version is best suited to be executed on two application scenarios, also by means of experiments. To synthesize the contributions of this paper we introduce the ASSISTANT programming model, for adaptive Pervasive Grid applications.

A Frontier Approach to Testing the Averch-Johnson Hypothesis

The mathematical programming technique Data Envelopment Analysis is used to test the famous hypothesis of Averch and Johnson that utility regulation leads to overuse of capital because the regulated firm earns a return s greater than its cost of capital r, an implicit capital subsidy resulting in allocative inefficiency. Technical and allocative inefficiency are based on cost and production frontiers from 337 electric generating plants using 1970 data, and r is based on the Capital Asset Pricing Model. Significant capital overuse and general failure to minimize costs is detected, but a second-step regression analysis finds no relationship between the overuse and the s-r subsidy. A small updated data set covering the period 1980-2004 suggests that overuse of capital is no longer a problem, a result that may be owing to recent deregulation and restructuring.

Evaluating international ethical climates: A goal programming model

A critical concern for firms pursuing international expansion strategies involves identifying countries that offer a good fit with the firm's overall ethical orientation. Unfortunately, little has been written to aid firms in identifying countries that offer this type of fit. This paper presents a model that combines the concepts of strategic management, cross-cultural management, business ethics, and the management science technique of goal programming. The purpose of the model is to aid managers in identifying countries for international expansion that offer the best fit with the firm's ethical orientation. The paper also extends the existing literature on crosscultural management and business ethics by applying a computer optimization model to evaluate potential countries for international expansion in a way that has not been done before.

The exact likelihood function for a prototypal job search model is analyzed. The optimality condition implied by the dynamic programming framework is fully imposed. Using the optimality condition allows identification of an offer arrival probability separately from an offer acceptance probability. The estimation problem is nonstandard. The geometry of the likelihood function in finite samples is considered, along with asymptotic properties of the maximum likelihood estimator.

In this paper, we investigate how easily we can port existing HPC applications that use MPI to run on HPRC systems, using three commercial highlevel synthesis tools in conjunction with the ArchES-MPI software/hardware communication layer. Specifically, we examine how each tool interfaces with our existing message-passing hardware, and we present a sample application that illustrates how the interface can be used.

Preventing and controlling outbreaks of infectious diseases such as pandemic influenza is a top public health priority. EpiSimdemics is an implementation of a scalable parallel algorithm to simulate the spread of contagion, including disease, fear and information, in large (10(8) individuals), realistic social contact networks using individual-based models. It also has a rich language for describing public policy and agent behavior. We describe CharmSimdemics and evaluate its performance on national scale populations. Charm++ is a machine independent parallel programming system, providing high-level mechanisms and strategies to facilitate the task of developing highly complex parallel applications. Our design includes mapping of application entities to tasks, leveraging the efficient and scalable communication, synchronization and load balancing strategies of Charm++. Our experimental results on a 768 core system show that the Charm++ version achieves up to a 4-fold increase in performance when compared to the MPI version.

Recently cloud services have been evaluated by scientific communities as a viable solution to satisfy their computing needs, reducing the cost of ownership and operation to the minimum. The analysis on the adoption of the cloud computing model for eScience has identified several areas of improvement as federation management and interoperability between providers. Portability between cloud vendors is a widely recognized feature to avoid the risk of lock-in of users in proprietary systems, a stopper to the complete adoption of clouds. In this paper we present a programming framework that allows the coordination of applications on federated clouds used to provide flexibility to traditional research infrastructures as clusters and grids. This approach allows researchers to program applications abstracting the underlying infrastructure and providing scaling and elasticity features through the dynamic provision of virtualized resources. The adoption of standard interfaces is a basic feature in the development of connectors for different middlewares ensuring the portability of the code between different providers.

In this paper we examine the development of IoT applications from the perspective of the Fog Computing paradigm, where computing infrastructure at the network edge in devices and gateways is leverage for efficiency and timeliness. Due to the intrinsic nature of the IoT: heterogeneous devices/resources, a tightly coupled perception-action cycle and widely distributed devices and processing, application development in the Fog can be challenging. To address these challenges, we propose a Distributed Dataflow (DDF) programming model for the IoT that utilises computing infrastructures across the Fog and the Cloud. We evaluate our proposal by implementing a DDF framework based on Node-RED (Distributed Node-RED or D-NR), a visual programming tool that uses a flow-based model for building IoT applications. Via demonstrations, we show that our approach eases the development process and can be used to build a variety of IoT applications that work efficiently in the Fog.

Confidentiality in the storage and handling of sensitive data is a central concern in computing security;one of the most sensitive data in computer systems is users' credentials. To ensure the confidentiality and integrity of sensitive data, developers can use a Trusted Execution Environment (TEE). One of such TEE is Intel Software Guard Extensions (SGX), which reduces the trusted computing base to a hardware/software concept called enclave. However, using SGX enclaves usually incurs in a performance impact in the application execution. In this paper we propose an enclave sharing approach to reduce the performance overhead in scenarios where multiple enclaves handle the same data. To evaluate this approach, we implemented a SGX-secured OS authentication service. Three prototypes were built, considering distinct concerns about security and performance. Results show that this approach can be used in high demand environments, presenting a small overhead.
