Assessing the performance portability of modern parallel programming models using TeaLeaf

In this work, we evaluate several emerging parallel programming models: Kokkos, RAJA, OpenACC, and OpenMP 4.0, against the mature CUDA and OpenCL APIs. Each model has been used to port Tealeaf, a miniature proxy application, or mini app, that solves the heat conduction equation and belongs to the Mantevo Project. We find that the best performance is achieved with architecture-specific implementations but that, in many cases, the performance portable models are able to solve the same problems to within a 5% to 30% performance penalty. While the models expose varying levels of complexity to the developer, they all achieve reasonable performance with this application. As such, if this small performance penalty is permissible for a problem domain, we believe that productivity and development complexity can be considered the major differentiators when choosing a modern parallel programming model to develop applications like Tealeaf.

An analysis was made of errors which can result from regional aggregation in spatial linear programming models. The agricultural sector of Portugal provided the empirical base for the analysis. programming solutions were obtained first for eleven regions and then for three regions which were aggregates of the eleven regions. It is concluded that significant errors which resulted from this form of aggregation can be reduced or eliminated by intraregional stratification of production activities and resources and a priori specification of intraregional transport cost. Since Aurora entered the TOP500 list in November 2023, the top ten systems saw some shifts in the ratio of GPU vendors represented. With each vendor supplying their own preferred programming models for their hardware, it becomes relevant to compare the portability of these models on other hardware platforms. For the present paper we implemented the N-body problem with different optimizations using native and portable programming frameworks. For each of those we determined the best performing optimized version on one target architecture and compared the performance achieved for each platform.

This paper examines the problem of capital budgeting in the area of highway maintenance. Emphasis is placed on specific, real-world user concerns relating to standard capital budgeting models, and suggestions are made for improving planning in this area. A two-phase approach to capital budgeting is suggested as a mechanism for resolving some of these concerns. In phase 1 a financial planning model is used as a means of determining appropriate budget levels. In phase 2 a goal programming model for achieving desired levels of service is given. A brief description is given of such a two-phase system currently being implemented in a Canadian transport ministry.

The evolution of parallel computing architectures presents new challenges for developing efficient parallelized codes. The emergence of heterogeneous systems has given rise to multiple programming models, each requiring careful adaptation to maximize performance. In this context, we propose reevaluating memory layout designs for computational tasks within larger nodes by comparing various architectures. To gain insight into the performance discrepancies between shared memory and shared-address space settings, we systematically measure the bandwidth between cores and sockets using different methodologies. Our findings reveal significant differences in performance, suggesting that MPI running inside UNIX processes may not fully utilize its intranode bandwidth potential. In light of our work in the MPC thread-based MPI runtime, which can leverage shared memory to achieve higher performance due to its optimized layout, we advocate for enabling the use of shared memory within the MPI standard.

Impact of productivity shock on household welfare in AfCFTA: a GSSA method

In a bid to improve living standards, the African Union and African Development Bank is encouraging the free movement of goods and productivity via technological innovation. In 2018, it even signed a continental free trade agreement (AfCFTA) between the various member countries, given that these countries do not have the same currency. This study quantitatively analyses the impact of a productivity shock on household welfare in Africa free trade zone (AfCFTA). Using the Generalized Simulation Stochastic Algorithm (GSSA) method and productivity data from the AfCFTA countries, we analyse welfare when there is economic integration and when there is not. The results show that when a country’s productivity level is high, so is the welfare of its population, with or without economic integration. Monetary integration must precede economic integration if the welfare of all households in member countries is to improve. Monetary integration guarantees a fixed parity of exchange rates between member countries and consequently stable or low fluctuating prices. This stability enables individuals to make better forecasts and improve trade. © The Author(s), under exclusive licence to Springer Nature Switzerland AG 2025.

The rise of virtualized and distributed infrastructures has led to new challenges to accomplish the effective use of compute resources through the design and orchestration of distributed applications. As legacy, monolithic applications are replaced with service-oriented applications, questions arise about the steps to be taken in order to maximize the usefulness of the infrastructures and to provide users with tools for the development and execution of distributed applications. One of the issues to be solved is the existence of multiple cloud solutions that are not interoperable, which forces the user to be locked to a specific provider or to continuously adapt applications. With the objective of simplifying the programmers challenges, ServiceSs provides a straightforward programming model and an execution framework that helps on abstracting applications from the actual execution environment. This paper presents how ServiceSs transparently interoperates with multiple providers implementing the appropriate interfaces to execute scientific applications on federated clouds.

Rolex: resilience-oriented language extensions for extreme-scale systems

Future exascale high-performance computing (HPC) systems will be constructed from VLSI devices that will be less reliable than those used today, and faults will become the norm, not the exception. This will pose significant problems for system designers and programmers, who for half-a-century have enjoyed an execution model that assumed correct behaviour by the underlying computing system. The mean time to failure of the system scales inversely to the number of components in the system and, therefore, faults and resultant system level failures will increase, as systems scale in terms of the number of processor cores and memory modules used. However, every error detected need not cause catastrophic failure. Many HPC applications are inherently fault resilient. Yet it is the application programmers who have this knowledge but lack mechanisms to convey it to the system. In this paper, we present new Resilience Oriented Language Extensions (Rolex) which facilitate the incorporation of fault resilience as an intrinsic property of the application code. We describe the syntax and semantics of the language extensions as well as the implementation of the supporting compiler infrastructure and runtime system. Our experiments show that an approach that leverages the programmer's insight to reason about the context and significance of faults to the application outcome significantly improves the probability that an application runs to a successful conclusion.

Modern software differs significantly from traditional computer applications that mostly process reasonably small amounts of static input data-sets in batch mode. Modern software increasingly processes massive amounts of data, whereby it is also often the case that new input data is produced and/or existing data is modified on the fly. Consequently, programming models that facilitate the development of such software are emerging. What characterizes them is that data, respectively changes thereof, implicitly flow through computation modules. The software engineer declaratively defines computations as compositions of other computations without explicitly modeling how data should flow along dependency relations between data producer and data consumer modules, letting the runtime to automatically manage and optimize data flows.

Scheduling intense applications most 'surprising' first

Certain streaming applications are required to perform sophisticated analytics within bounded time on arriving streams of data. Such applications have the interesting characteristic that the total amount of work that could be performed is unbounded. We show how recent results from algorithmic theory are useful in scheduling such applications as they allow the efficient creation of synopses of unprocessed data. These synopses can then be used to schedule the processing of the stream. In particular, we describe a preliminary implementation of a scheduler that optimizes the information rate available to applications by estimating the entropy of arriving streams. We describe the theory underlying such a scheduler and motivate how existing programming models can be extended to accommodate it by outlining a basic but functional implementation in the Java programming language.
