The dynamic environments where Wireless Sensor Networks (WSNs) are being deployed, nowadays, necessitate the design of appropriate middleware architectures which provide flexible mechanisms to adapt application behavior while making wise utilization of the constrained resources. In combination with heterogeneity issues which usually appear in such networks, this results in high complexity of the application development typically involving the usage of a low or high level programming language in order to assure efficient operation of the network. To deal with these challenges, a modular middleware architecture is proposed which supports a programming abstraction based on the automation domain notion of function blocks (FBs). The network is (re) programmed with new applications in the form of mobile agents which are injected from a base station, while the Service Oriented Architecture (SOA) paradigm is adopted considering the function blocks as services distributed in the WSN nodes according to the resources of the underlying devices. Each agent is a schematic description of wirings between function blocks which are allocated by the middleware in the neighborhood of a target node, being in this way highly autonomous and adaptive, while presenting low resource utilization overhead as it is shown by an application case study.

Handling state dependencies is a major challenge in modern SDN programming, but existing frameworks do not provide sufficient abstractions nor tools to address this challenge. In this paper, we propose a novel, high-level programming abstraction and implement the Function Automation SysTem (FAST). With the two key features, i.e., automated state dependency tracking and efficient re-execution scheduling, we demonstrate that FAST substantially simplifies state-dependent SDN programming and boosts the performance.

QCCP: a taskflow programming model for emerging computing scenario

As the demand for computing power continues to rise, it is difficult for a single type of computing device or architecture to satisfy the current situation. Diversity and heterogeneity are becoming more and more popular. Seamlessly integrating the realms of high performance computing and quantum computing, and harnessing their collective potential, has emerged as a consensus approach to effectively address the pressing need for increased computing power. In the emerging computing scenario, various different types of computing devices have super-heterogeneous characteristics, and there are significant differences in computational principles, programming models, parallelism, etc. Effectively harnessing these disparate resources and achieving a unified programming paradigm have become urgent imperatives. To address the above problems, this paper introduces QCCP, a taskflow programming model that enables efficient collaborative computing between classical computers and quantum computers. QCCP establishes a unified programming abstraction, shields the super-heterogeneous characteristics of the underlying network and hardware, and supports flexible scheduling for different computational backends. The experimental results indicate that QCCP can support the processing of hybrid classical-quantum applications with diverse program structures. In particular, QCCP reveals its immense potential and superiority in tackling real-world challenges, specifically in the realm of quantum circuit cutting and reconstruction.

Heterogeneous compute architectures like Multi-Core CPUs, CUDA GPUs, and Intel Xeon Phis have become prevalent over the years. While heterogeneity makes architecture specific features available to the programmer, it also makes application development difficult, as one needs to plan for optimal usage of architectural features, suitable partitioning of the workload, communication and data transfer among the participating devices. A suitable design abstraction that hides such variabilities of the underlying devices and at the same time exploits their computing capabilities, can improve developer productivity. In this work, we present "ThrustHetero", a lightweight framework based on NVIDIA's Thrust, that provides an abstraction over several devices such as GPUs, Xeon Phis and multicore, yet allows developers to easily leverage the full compute capability of these devices. We also demonstrate a novel method for workload distribution in two stages - micro-benchmarking during framework installations to find good proportions and then using this information during application execution. We consider four classes of applications based on how they would perform on various computing architectures on the basis of the amount of branching present in the application. We show that the framework produces a good workload distribution proportions for each class of application and also show that the framework is scalable and portable. Further, we compare the performance and ease of development when using the framework with the native versions of various benchmarks and obtain favorable results.

Developing complex sensor/actuator systems, like robot applications, is challenged by a multitude of different hardware platforms, networks, programming languages, data formats, etc. In this paper, we present our architecture that copes with this heterogeneity and allows for a flexible composition of smart sensors and actuators. The main focus lies on a two layered approach combining the communication middleware FAMOUSO and the programming abstraction MOSAIC. FAMOUSO enables the information exchange between networked systems, hides the high degree of heterogeneity on hardware and network level, and is usable from different programming environments. MOSAIC uses FAMOUSO and provides a generic access to the exchanged information. Furthermore, it offers a way to abstract from different sensor and actuator hardware and provides a framework for application development with predefined components, enabling comprehensive fault detection. The paper concludes with a case study that shows how the middleware and programming abstractions are used to build a distributed modular system for a robot manipulator.

The impact of distributed programming abstractions on application energy consumption

With battery capacities remaining a key physical constraint for mobile devices, energy efficiency has become an important software design consideration. Distributed programming abstractions (e.g., sockets, RPC, messages, etc.) are an essential component of modern software, but their energy consumption characteristics are poorly understood. The programmer has few practical guidelines to choose the right abstraction for energy-constrained scenarios. In this article, we report on the findings of a systematic study we conducted to compare and contrast major distributed programming abstractions in terms of their energy consumption patterns. By varying the abstractions with the rest of the functionality fixed, we measure and analyze the impact of distributed programming abstractions on application energy consumption. Based on our findings, we present a set of practical guidelines for the programmer to select an abstraction that satisfies the energy consumption constraints in place. Our other guidelines can steer future efforts in creating energy efficient distributed programming abstractions. (c) 2013 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Vectorizing unstructured mesh computations for many-core architectures

Achieving optimal performance on the latest multi-core and many-core architectures increasingly depends on making efficient use of the hardware's vector units. This paper presents results on achieving high performance through vectorization on CPUs and the Xeon-Phi on a key class of irregular applications: unstructured mesh computations. Using single instruction multiple thread (SIMT) and single instruction multiple data (SIMD) programming models, we show how unstructured mesh computations map to OpenCL or vector intrinsics through the use of code generation techniques in the OP2 Domain Specific Library and explore how irregular memory accesses and race conditions can be organized on different hardware. We benchmark Intel Xeon CPUs and the Xeon-Phi, using a tsunami simulation and a representative CFD benchmark. Results are compared with previous work on CPUs and NVIDIA GPUs to provide a comparison of achievable performance on current many-core systems. We show that auto-vectorization and the OpenCL SIMT model do not map efficiently to CPU vector units because of vectorization issues and threading overheads. In contrast, using SIMD vector intrinsics imposes some restrictions and requires more involved programming techniques but results in efficient code and near-optimal performance, two times faster than non-vectorized code. We observe that the Xeon-Phi does not provide good performance for these applications but is still comparable with a pair of mid-range Xeon chips. Copyright (c) 2015 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.

PS-QUASAR: A publish/subscribe QoS aware middleware for Wireless Sensor and Actor Networks

It has been more than 30 years since the first research into Wireless Sensor and Actor Networks appeared. However, WSANs are still not a ubiquitous technology due to several factors which include a lack of Quality of Service (QoS) support or the absence of high level programming models. New applications with heterogeneous QoS requirements where WSANs can be successfully applied, such as Critical Infrastructure Protection (CIP), have been recognized. PS-QUASAR, a middleware for WSANs that deals with these two issues, offers a high level simple programming model based on the publish/subscribe paradigm. In this model all nodes in the network are potential publishers of each of the topics. PS-QUASAR also handles QoS (reliability, deadline, priority) and supports a many-to-many exchange of messages between nodes in a fully distributed way by means of multicasting techniques. Performance evaluation via simulation using the Contiki operating system shows that the protocol can handle multiple publishers and subscribers at the same time whilst dealing with QoS requirements. EgoSpaces: Facilitating rapid development of context-aware mobile applications

Today's mobile applications require constant adaptation to their changing environments, or contexts. Technological advances have increased the pervasiveness of mobile computing devices such as laptops, handhelds, and embedded sensors. The sheer amount of context information available for adaptation places a heightened burden on application developers as they must manage and utilize vast amounts of data from diverse sources. Facilitating programming in this data-rich environment requires a middleware that provides context information to applications in an abstract form. In this paper, we demonstrate the feasibility of such a middleware that allows programmers to focus on high-level interactions among programs and to employ declarative abstract context specifications in settings that exhibit transient interactions with opportunistically encountered components. We also discuss the novel context-aware abstractions the middleware provides and the programming knowledge necessary to write applications using it. Finally, we provide examples demonstrating the infrastructure's ability to support differing tasks from a wide variety of application domains.

An attempt to raise the level of software abstraction in assembly robotics through an apposite choice of underlying mechatronics

Robot manipulators were meant to be the production engineer's flexible friend. Assembly robots, however, have failed to fulfill their promise. The problem that has continuously plagued robotic assembly is that of spatial uncertainty. It is our thesis that the ubiquitous problem of spatial uncertainty is an artefact of the fact that current industrial manipulators are designed for an operational paradigm that assumes position control is of primary importance. In this paper we propound an alternative approach based on sliding as the primary motion primitive. We first present a model that uses sliding to allow us to raise the level of abstraction of robot programming tasks. We then describe an inherently accommodating, (planar) three degree of freedom, direct-drive robot arm that was constructed to test our approach. Finally, we present data collected from representative (planar) manipulation tasks that substantiate our claims.
