Approximating distributions over strings is a hard learning problem. Typical techniques involve using finite state machines as models and attempting to learn these;these machines can either be hand built and then have their weights estimated, or built by grammatical inference techniques: the structure and the weights are then learned simultaneously. The Probabilistic Automata learning competition (PAUTOMAC), run in 2012, was the first grammatical inference challenge that allowed the comparison between these methods and algorithms. Its main goal was to provide an overview of the state-of-the-art techniques for this hard learning problem. Both artificial data and real data were presented and contestants were to try to estimate the probabilities of strings. The purpose of this paper is to describe some of the technical and intrinsic challenges such a competition has to face, to give a broad state of the art concerning both the problems dealing with learning grammars and finite state machines and the relevant literature. This paper also provides the results of the competition and a brief description and analysis of the different approaches the main participants used.

We describe the process of selecting and preparing the Slovak IOI team. The presented information is related to the situation in the year 2007. We present the structure of the Slovak national Olympiad in informatics and of the Slovak selection camp, including the rationale behind their current form. We list several other national activities that help our students acquiring extracurricular knowledge in computer science. We discuss our cooperation with other countries in the region. Finally, we give several examples of tasks used in our Olympiad.

Plenty of local and international competitions are being held such as ACM ICPC with the increasing need for computer programming skills. Therefore, a suitable application is required to create a transparent, responsive, and accurate judging system for the competition. However, problems arise when there are some modifications made to meet the international standard rules, especially the utilization of the programming language. In this paper, UM Framework based Online Judge (OJ) system is proposed to overcome the related problems. In this proposed method, flexible judging system is designed which can be used for any programming competitions, both locally and internationally such as ACM ICPC, SPOJ, etc. It has been shown that the proposed online judging system has source code compiling speed of 3.6 seconds per code and accuracy up to 99.9%.

This paper describes the design and progress of the annual Robotrader competition that is organized at Telecommunication Engineering School of Universidad Politecnica de Madrid (UPM) for university students all across Spain. The aim of the competition is to program real time algorithmic trading systems;but along the way students, that usually have a technical engineering profile, explore the financial markets and get to know the firms and products from the financial sector. The initiative involves a mixture of education styles, each aimed at achieving specific goals. First, there are lectures given by professors and professionals from both the financial and computer science sectors. The lectures are followed by a competition in which students can put into practice what they have learnt in the lectures. The initiative provides a forum for the students that serves as a tool for e-learning during the market formation period as well as a way to follow the results of the competition.
