Each year the ACM hosts a truly international programming contest - the International Collegiate programming contest (ICPC). Dating back to a contest held by Texas A&M University in 1970, this annual event, along with the associated regional contests, has grown to 5606 teams from 1733 universities in 84 countries (in the year 2006). Despite the maturity of the event, and the number of competitors, there has never been a systematic examination of contest strategy. Herein several strategies are proposed and examined to determine whether a team call gain all advantage by choosing a good strategy;and, if so, then what that strategy should be. We show that a team call gain in advantage by choosing a good strategy, but that there is no one best strategy. A team must choose between winning by number of solved problems and winning by points. Finding the optimal strategy to will by problems is shown to be NP-complete, while to win by points a team must solve problems in order from easiest to hardest. (C) 2006 Elsevier Ltd. Owing to the rapid growth of the modern information society, it is necessary to educate young people who are responsible for the future of the Information Technology (IT). A programming contest is a competitive learning that is intended to improve skills and enhance knowledge of the IT. In Japan, programming contests for high-school students play an important role in information education but analyses of their effect and role in the education system has been scarce. In this research, an analysis framework based on a survey of programming contests is proposed and a corresponding analysis tool for evaluating and analyzing a programming contest is created. The summary of the survey, the details of the framework and the tool are explained in this paper.

This workshop will show participants how to host a successful programming competition aimed at high school students, and will also be broadly applicable to collegiate level competitions. These contests encourage high school students to major in computer science and can have a positive effect on the recruitment for the host institution. In addition, our anecdotal evidence has shown a high participation rate from under-represented groups at such contests. Running a successful contest, however, is a challenging endeavor. With potentially hundreds of people attending -- both students and coaches -- there are many logistical issues to address. Beyond that, generating an appropriate problem set and ensuring the contest submission system that runs smoothly are critical to a successful event. A poorly run contest can do more harm than good, as the participants will leave with a negative view of the contest, the institution, and possibly even the field. The workshop will cover problem generation and submission system usage, as well as provide discussions and handouts covering all the logistical aspects for hosting such a high school contest. Documentation covering all aspects of the contest will be provided to participants. The workshop organizers include a faculty advisor, a high school coach, and a former student who both participated in -- and later ran -- the contest. At least one organizer has been in every one of the roles in this type of contest. We have successfully run seven such contests, with the last four having 200 high school contestants.

The ACM Intercollegiate programming contest is probably the most prestigious competition of its kind. Decomposing problems into familiar algorithms; making tradeoffs between efficiency and complexity; working on a team under pressure; not only are these skills needed to compete successfully in such a contest, but are also highly valued in industry. The focus of this poster is to describe a course recently added to the curriculum at Vanderbilt University that centers on programming contest skills and yet, somewhat surprisingly, encompasses several significant learning *** we already had a general idea of what the learning activities of a course like this would be, we were careful not to simply cobble together performance metrics and learning objectives to suit them. This common mistake leads to assessments that devolve into skills tests measuring basic knowledge instead of instruments that gauge a deeper understanding of the target learning objectives. To combat these pitfalls I broke down the learning activity by identifying the skills needed for success in such an exercise. I then classified each skill in two ways. (i) How could this ability play a part in the achievement of some broader, overarching concept and (ii) in what way might the learning and practice of this skill contribute to the deeper understanding of these larger concepts. Our goal is to inform faculty on how they might include a course like this in their programs and to demonstrate its value to the curriculum.

programming contests have a number of pedagogical benefits: they reinforce many concepts and skills that students see in computer science courses, build cross-cutting skills such as teamwork, and can improve job prospects by better preparing students for technical job *** largest and oldest inter-collegiate programming contest in the world is the ACM's International Collegiate programming contest (ICPC). Participating in this contest can be fun and instructive for students, but some schools are discouraged from participation because of the large hurdles involved in forming an effective programming contest team, or in making an existing team more effective.A key to success for coaches and teams is to connect with existing individuals who are involved in the process and learn from them, as it is very hard to initiate effective involvement with no external help. This birds-of-a-feather will bring together existing ICPC coaches with other faculty who want to start such a programming contest team, or who want to improve their existing *** will include issues that prevent greater participation in the North American super-region, as well as the overall international ICPC climate. Extensive links to existing resources -- both online and published -- will be provided, as well as a means for coaches to foster networking and communication. Strategy guides, including an article in this year's SIGCSE conference, will be discussed and distributed.

Learning to program computers and other devices are becoming an essential skill for students of high school and college. With this knowledge, young people can master the tools and technology that are part of everyday life. However, the traditional teaching, even in computer science courses, needs to break the barrier and use new approaches to motivate students to learn programming in an effective way. Participation in programming contests can promote student engagement. Although there are systems that support training for programming contests, they don't still promote student engagement and neither personalized and effective learning. This article aims to propose a recommendation system to support the student's performance in programming contests, with the goal of providing personalized learning. Problems are recommended according to the profile and student's skills. Therefore, we used ephemeral personalization, pull-delivery recommendation and content-based filtering approaches. Usability tests were conducted to validate the system. Finally, we present an application scenario where this system can be used how a pedagogical strategy for teaching programming.

The task preparation system (TPS) is a tool developed mainly for preparing IOI tasks. It was originally developed for, and successfully used in IOI 2017, and since then, it has been used in several other nationwide and international programming contests, including IOI 2019. The tool consists of a command-line interface for local (offline) work, and a web interface which integrates with git and provides more features. This article presents the main features of the task preparation system, and briefly describes how it works. © 2019 IOI, Vilnius University.

This paper presents the organization of the Polish Olympiad in Informatics, together with tasks preparation process and evaluation. It is a result of over 14 years of experience in organization of programming contests for high-school pupils. We believe, that although described procedures are rather widely know, their rigorous implementation is the key to organization of a successful programming contest.

We describe the process of selecting and preparing the Slovak IOI team. The presented information is related to the situation in the year 2007. We present the structure of the Slovak national Olympiad in informatics and of the Slovak selection camp, including the rationale behind their current form. We list several other national activities that help our students acquiring extracurricular knowledge in computer science. We discuss our cooperation with other countries in the region. Finally, we give several examples of tasks used in our Olympiad.
