Design of highly compact short-time duty power inductors for supercapacitor charging applications

For medium-voltage, large-capacity, multi-output supercapacitor charging applications, power inductors play an important role in filtering and energy storage. For a short-time duty power inductor, the major design challenge is accurate transient thermal prediction, which goes beyond the scope of the empirical method. A transient thermal model that considers water-cooling plates was constructed to predict thermal performance. On this basis, this study presents a novel multi-objective optimisation design method, where the analytical method and the finite-element method were combined through programming control to balance accuracy and efficiency. Furthermore, a short-time duty 400 kW/182 A/2 kHz/15 kV power inductor prototype was designed and manufactured. Compared with the results of the 30-minute thermal experiment, the calculation error is no >7.0%, which is significant for the accurate and highly compact design of the short-time duty power inductor.

LADDER-DIAGRAM DESIGN FOR PROGRAMMABLE controlLERS

A method for designing ladder diagrams for sequencing tasks is described. It is systematic, fast, simple to apply, and applicable to both programmable controllers (PLCs) and hard-wired relay circuits. The method divides the required sequence into groups according to a simple rule. These groups are then encoded using the “one-hot” code, with each group assigned one relay operating as flip-flop. The method can also be adapted to systems with multi-path sequences having one or more random inputs. This is important with simple, low-cost PLCs, having no provisions for conditional jumps. Four examples of such multi-path sequences are presented.

Liquid robotics with arbitrary deformability and rich functionality can adapt to various environmental constraints and perform many significant tasks. To turn this vision into reality, an intelligent liquid system, ferrofluid, which possesses excellent macroscopic and microscopic responsiveness to external magnetic fields, is explored as the rudiment of liquid robotics. Focus is given not only to its improved fabrication and cooperative programming control, but also its underexplored object manipulation and signal transmission. The prepared ferrofluid consists of sterically stabilized ultra-small magnetic nanoparticles suspended in carrier liquids, showing strong stability, flexible mobility, and substantial magnetization. Intelligent locomotion and complex morphology control are successfully achieved by a programmable platform that generates sequential predesigned magnetic fields through the timing activation of specific electromagnets. Meanwhile, by utilizing the magneto-Archimedes effect, this ferrofluid system can perform multi-dimensional manipulation of objects with densities ranging from 1.1 to 8.9 g/cm3 in cooperation with varying magnetic fields. Furthermore, this system can sense vibrations due to its intrinsic liquid feature and send corresponding signals through detecting the changes in magnetic flux by external coils. Similarly, the flow, concentration, and speed of ferrofluids can also be detected. These advancements in fabrication, control, operation, and sensing are crucial for the development of liquid robotics.

Inspection of Process Computers for Nuclear Power Plants

Process control computers are used in nuclear power plants for very different tasks. Depending on the significance for safety the demands on faultless construction and reliability are more or less urgent. Those demands are the main topic of the paper. While analysing process control computer systems in nuclear power plants you will find, with respect to the usual separation between hardware and software, some more problems in the field of software than in the hardware. The reason will be discussed. Developments in computer technology may change this situation a little. There are strong efforts to simplify software production, and as a result it may become more easy to check software. Due to increasing integration and hectic changes it will be more and more difficult to obtain full range information about hardware, to process these informations and to verify them with reasonable expense and time.

A Modular Approach to the control Program Construction in Real-Time Minicomputer Systems

This paper presents a constructing methodology of the control programs for real-time processing in small scale computers, where the fork-join mechanism is applied. The new concept t-unit is introduced and the data processing is logically defined by its stream in control function programs. Each function program is assembled independently and the mutual linkage is dynamically taken at the run time with the t-unit. The pseudoparallel processing is executed by the modified fork-join of the t-unit streams. The t-unit is regarded as the mailbox from the viewpoint of the user and is used for cooperation. The service programs of peripheral devices are replaced according to the environment. The concept of task is not used. All the informations associated with the event control and the CPU dispatching are packed in the t-unit , and the compact supervisor is constructed.

An effective job assignment of overhead cranes has been developed by computer simulation. Key function of crane control logic has been focused on maintaining flexible operation to comply with the fluctuation of coil intervals at lines and to minimize conflict conditions of cranes as possible. Final revised logics evaluated through saved time for No. 1 Tandem Cold Mill has been proved same as that of effective manual operation in ability. The developed system combined with the other part of task force which covers, automatic postioning of cranes and handling of coils has been confirmed to be feasible as a fully automated crane control system.
