FlexPDA:A Flexible programming framework for Deep Learning Accelerators

There are a wide variety of intelligence accelerators with promising performance and energy efficiency,deployed in a broad range of applications such as computer vision and speech ***,programming productivity hinders the deployment of deep learning *** low-level library invoked in the high-level deep learning framework which supports the end-to-end execution with a given model,is designed to reduce the programming burden on the intelligence ***,it is inflexible for developers to build a network model for every deep learning application,which probably brings unnecessary repetitive *** this paper,a flexible and efficient programming framework for deep learning accelerators,FlexPDA,is proposed,which provides more optimization opportunities than the low-level library and realizes quick transplantation of applications to intelligence accelerators for fast *** evaluate FlexPDA by using 10 representative operators selected from deep learning algorithms and an end-to-end *** experimental results validate the effectiveness of FlexPDA,which achieves an end-to-end performance improvement of 1.620x over the low-level library.

JCOGIN: a programming framework for particle transport on combinatorial geometry

Domain-specific programming frameworks are usually effective to simplify the development of large-scale applications on supercomputers. This paper introduces a parallel programming framework named JCOGIN for particle transport on combinatorial geometry. JCOGIN provides a combinatorial geometry data model and a patch-based parallel computing model to manage the data distribution in parallel computing and implements the hybrid parallelism of the domain decomposition and the particle parallelism on MPI/OpenMP to overcome the bottleneck of huge memory demand and long computational time. The application programming interface of JCOGIN can support users to quickly develop their parallel particle transport applications. Based on this framework, users only need to write serial codes for large-scale numerical simulations on modern supercomputers. The parallel efficiency of applications based on JCOGIN can reach up to 80% on hundreds of thousands of CPU cores.

The emergence of pervasive wide-area distributed computing environments, such as pervasive information systems and computational Grids, has enabled new generations of applications that are based on seamless access, aggregation, and interaction. However, the inherent complexity, heterogeneity, and dynamism of these systems require a change in how the applications are developed and managed. In this paper, we present a programming framework that extends existing programming models/frameworks to support the development of autonomic self-managing applications. The framework enables the development of autonomic elements and the formulation of autonomic applications as the dynamic composition of autonomic elements. The operation of the proposed framework is illustrated using a forest fire management application.

FieldOpt: A powerful and effective programming framework tailored for field development optimization

Petroleum field development involves critical decisions such as well location, well completion design and optimal control setting that have a significant impact on revenues and costs. These decisions are associated with a large degree of engineering effort that commonly involves time-consuming reservoir simulations to compute the performance of different field development scenarios. Increasingly within the petroleum industry, software tools and optimization methodology are developed and implemented to support and augment the various decision-making processes. The overall aim of these tools is to increase productivity and improve decision quality. Within this context, this work introduces an open-source, extensible, tailor-made programming framework: FieldOpt. FieldOpt's primary purpose is rapid prototyping and testing of optimization procedures to solve critical field development problems. The framework is implemented in C++ and provides an efficient integration of mathematical optimization procedures with reservoir simulation. FieldOpt's modular architecture and use of object-oriented programming allow the users to adapt and extend the code with ease. The architecture has proven successful in facilitating new optimization algorithms, new use cases, and new methodology for optimization with minimal effort and change to internal data structures and data flow. Three use cases are presented to demonstrate the optimization capabilities of FieldOpt as well as the flexibility and ease-of-use of the software regarding configuring various optimization procedures to solve a range of field development problems. The three use cases presented optimize on well control, well completion design and well placement parameters, respectively. For each case, both the configuration of the algorithms and problems within FieldOpt as well as the final solution and performance of the different optimization procedures are discussed. CrowdKit: A Generic programming framework for Mobile Crowdsensing Applications

Mobile Crowdsensing (MCS) has become a popular sensing paradigm, where a number of participants use their mobile devices to collectively share and extract information related to a certain common interest. In this trend, many typical applications, such as environmental monitoring, intelligent transportation, and public safety, are emerging in our daily lives, and the need to quickly develop various new applications is becoming more urgent. However, existing programming frameworks for MCS applications either target specific scenarios that lack extensibility or require considerable development effort and expertise, hindering innovation in this direction. In order to reduce the burden of developing new MCS applications, we devise a developer-oriented generic programming framework, namely CrowdKit. It abstracts the common and fundamental data models and functions of MCS applications and makes them reusable. Meanwhile, it follows the principles of modular design, visual development, and automatic code generation to further bring extensibility and drastically reduce the difficulty and time cost of developers. Moreover, its algorithm modules can accommodate various advanced MCS algorithms, thus narrowing the gap between theory and practice. We implement and release a full-fledged version of CrowdKit, and conduct comprehensive case study and user study to demonstrate its simplicity, generality, extensibility and high efficiency.

This paper introduces a programming framework named JAUMIN for large-scale numerical applications on unstructured meshes. Based on this framework, serial codes are only required to be written for large-scale parallel application suitable for modern supercomputers with tens of thousands of CPU cores.

Recent studies have shown promising performance benefits when multiple stages of a pipelined stencil application are mapped to different parts of a GPU to run concurrently. An important factor for the computing efficiency of such pipelines is the granularity of a task. In previous programming frameworks that support true pipelined computations on GPU, the choice has to be made by the programmers during the application development time. Due to many difficulties, programmers' decisions are often far from optimal, causing inferior performance and performance portability. This paper presents GOPipe, a granularity-oblivious programming framework for efficient pipelined stencil executions on GPU. With GOPipe, programmers no longer need to specify the appropriate task granularity. GOPipe automatically finds it, and dynamically schedules tasks of that granularity for efficiency while observing all inter-task and inter-stage data dependencies. In our experiments on six real-life applications and various scenarios, GOPipe outperforms the state-of-the-art system by 1.39x on average with a much better programming productivity.

This paper presents Spirit, a lightweight programming framework for intelligent system. Ease of use and tiny development effort are two key features considered during the design. Spirit is mainly a template class, which provides a configure table, commonly used libraries in system control and computer vision, inter-process communication for parallel programming, hardware middleware for different hardware products, and customizable algorithm functions. Developers utilize Spirit to create modules or even systems for their intelligent applications very quickly as well as using powerful tools in Spirit for convenient debugging. We compared Spirit with existing robot frameworks and proposed a new design criterion. Results show that Spirit gives a better experience on rapid system design and debugging. We used it when developing an intelligent vehicle system.

Self-adaptive systems can adapt to environmental changes. In spite of many studies of self-adaptive systems, there are few implementations of them on real-world hardware. One of the main reasons for this is that the existing programming frameworks do not pay enough attention to the constraints on real-world hardware. In this study, we focus on an adaptation mechanism for real-world embedded systems and present a preliminary programming framework to implement self-adaptive embedded systems. As a case study we build a self-adaptive system using our framework on LEGO Mindstorms EV3 to demonstrate the feasibility of our framework.

This paper proposes Pyne, a parallel programming framework for developing parallel simulations. Pyne is designed such that parallel applications are developed with sequential programming. Pyne provides a programming environment in which programmers select data structures, define the sequence of operations for the data, and implement some sequential functions to describe the detailed calculation rules for the operations. Pyne automatically creates parallel data structures and performs parallel executions. This paper discusses the programming interface and runtime optimization algorithms that enable the parallel programming model. We evaluated Pyne by implementing a fluid dynamics simulation with both Pyne and a state-of-the-art parallel library. The results show that Pyne succeeds at reducing the code size by 70%, while maintaining performance and scalability.
