Algon: From Interchangeable Distributed Algorithms to Interchangeable Middleware

We present the design and implementation of a framework for interchangeable distributed algorithms. The algorithms are drawn from the set which includes mutual exclusion, deadlock detection and agreement protocols, and we have implemented several examples of the first tonsiswo of these. Algon cts of a library of algorithms, a framework for incorporating them into a new or existing system, and a tool for evaluating comparative performance. In this way, much of the complexity related to distributed systems can be isolated in its own component level and the programmer can choose from among different algorithms in the same class based on performance in a given application. Incorporating many algorithms in a single framework was made possible by the observation that algorithms in a given class, e.g. mutual exclusion, almost always expose the same methods. These methods interface with an Algon scheduler which maintains state and provides convenient hooks for the application to invoke the services of the algorithm. In this paper we describe the structure of Algon in detail, with a distributed deadlock detection algorithm as the case study. We then extend the notion of separation of concerns by creating an addition layer in Algon, underneath which the middleware that runs on each node can be interchanged, for example from Java-RMI to CORBA. Challenges in the re-tooling of the system, related to multiple inheritance, exceptions and the automatic generation of stubs and skeletons in our implementation language, Java, were overcome in novel ways. Algon has the potential to be a framework with a long life, as it can adapt to new middleware, such as. NET.

We consider the issues of routing under constraints and formulate a mathematical problem of visiting megalopolises. The order of visits is subject to precedence constraints. In addition, the cost functions depend on the set of pending tasks. The quality criterion is a variety of the additive criterion. The problem is established within the dynamic programming framework, however, a heuristic is proposed and implemented to solve practical problems of large dimensionality. © 2016

In computer graphics (CG) education, the challenge of finding modern, versatile tools is significant, particularly when integrating both legacy and advanced technologies. Traditional frameworks, often reliant on solid, yet outdated APIs like OpenGL, limit the exploration of cutting-edge graphics techniques. To address this, we introduce pyGANDALF, a unique, lightweight, open-source CG framework built on three pillars: Entity-Component-System (ECS) architecture, Python programming, and WebGPU integration. This combination sets pyGANDALF apart by providing a streamlined ECS design with an editor layer, compatibility with WebGPU for state-of-the-art features like compute and ray tracing pipelines, and a programmer-friendly Python environment. The framework supports modern features, such as Physically Based Rendering (PBR) capabilities and integration with Universal Scene Description (USD) formats, making it suitable for both educational demonstrations and real-world applications. Evaluations by expert users confirmed that pyGANDALF effectively balances ease of use with advanced functionality, preparing students for contemporary CG development challenges.

By combining voice and touch interactions, multimodal interfaces can surpass the efficiency of either modality alone. Traditional multimodal frameworks require laborious developer work to support rich multimodal commands where the user's multimodal command involves possibly exponential combinations of actions/function invocations. This paper presents ReactGenie, a programming framework that better separates multimodal input from the computational model to enable developers to create efficient and capable multimodal interfaces with ease. ReactGenie translates multimodal user commands into NLPL (Natural Language programming Language), a programming language we created, using a neural semantic parser based on large-language models. The ReactGenie runtime interprets the parsed NLPL and composes primitives in the computational model to implement complex user commands. As a result, ReactGenie allows easy implementation and unprecedented richness in commands for end-users of multimodal apps. Our evaluation showed that 12 developers can learn and build a non-trivial ReactGenie application in under 2.5 hours on average. In addition, compared with a traditional GUI, end-users can complete tasks faster and with less task load using ReactGenie apps.

programming swarm robots is considered to be more challenging than developing single robot applications, mostly due to the unpredictable behaviors and complex coordination of the swarm. In this paper, we present GSDF, a generic development framework for swarm robotics, to promote both programmability and flexibility. In its core lies a lightweight runtime, which maintains all the swarm-related data structures in a decentralized manner. The runtime is based on the design of a two-level communication graph, which decouples intra- and inter-robot communications. On the intra-robot level, existing popular messaging mechanisms, such as that of the Robot Operating System (ROS), can be adopted to reuse programming resources in the ROS eco-system. On the inter-robot level, the framework presents an abstract communication layer. It provides a unified communication interface to the framework runtime, and hence makes the framework agnostic to underlying communication mechanisms. GSDF also provides a clear interface to facilitate programming robot swarms, including prescribed tools for swarm management and information sharing. Finally, we demonstrate the feasibility and efficiency of GSDF using a couple of experiments in robotic simulators.

The plethora, the diversity of Internet of Things (IoT) devices and the targeted multi-domain applications, have created a complex environment for new developers to create applications. Also, the introduction of science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) courses, starting from the elementary school, it is not just a trend anymore but an important part of the educational curriculum. Usually, however, the platforms used in these STEM courses, like Arduino, Raspberry Pi and others, lack any capabilities for central or distributed coordination between the involved devices. In our work, we present OpenMIC library for the development of multi-agent applications running in several devices, providing intelligence and computing capabilities. We discuss the architecture and the implementation details of the OpenMIC library and describe how new applications based on the OpenMIC library can be developed. An example application is also presented for the monitoring and the management of multiple IoT devices.

A class of research, which explores energy saving via the accuracy-performance tradeoff ability of applications with soft outputs, is emerging. Many such applications implement various notions of precision improvement in their iterative computations and output approximated results. Computing more precisely often requires greater computational effort;hence there is a tradeoff space between precision and cost as long as the output accuracy remains within a targeted bound. This paper reviews the state-of-the-art accuracy tradeoff frameworks, and presents abstract model representations to facilitate our comparison of these frameworks in terms of robustness, performance, profiling, run-time feedback control, and specification of accuracy metrics.

In the work there is analyzed a process of developing and arranging information support systems of mobile vehicles with the enhanced autonomous level and fully autonomous. There are reviewed current trends in creating this sort of systems. In order to increase the effectiveness of processes of creating intellectual autopilots it is proposed to introduce into the review the space of similar systems configuration. The space axes are: sensors, models of environment, and algorithmic support. The points of this space are "assemblage points" of particular application systems. The configuration space enables to efficiently resolve the process of creating information support systems with the help of compliance matrixes, evaluate possible options of arranging the particular system. There are proposed solutions on components per each axis of the configuration space. As the basis for mobile means information systems the real time multifunctional vision systems and software-hardware unification is proposed. In terms of the hardware components, there are reviewed, in detail, arrangements of real time vision systems. The construction of external world models is proposed to establish on the interpreting navigation concept. In terms of algorithmic support, the combination of the split-level processing algorithms is proposed to implement based on large-scale frames and unification of software implementations. Examples of using the above-described approaches and solutions are presented.

In the last years many standards have been created for the industrial control domain. Some have found wide adoption in the industiy, while others seem to never leave the stage of a promising technology. An example of the first type is ISA 88, that defines an architectural design for control applications for the batch process industiy. The author is of the opinion that IEC 61499 is an example of the latter. In this paper the author analyzes how the design architecture defined in ISA 88 may be implemented using the programming framework defined in IEC 61499. Even though ISA 88 and IEC 61499 both follow an event based and object-oriented approach, the author uncovers a fundamental constraint of the IEC 61499 related to the dynamic invocation of services from distinct object instances. Without tiying to extend the IEC 61499 standard, two approaches are presented to work around this constraint.

We propose a novel technique called API virtualization to enable open innovation in Android. API virtualization inserts a shim layer between the Android platform layer and the app layer as shown in Figure 1, which can intercept any and every platform API call made by an app. In addition, API virtualization allows third-party developers to inject custom code, so that they can modify, reimplement, or customize existing Android APIs. This is achieved by (i) injecting a wrapper class for each platform API class that a third-party developer wants to replace, and (ii) rewriting the binary of an app so that the app code uses wrapper classes instead of platform API classes. Our API virtualization is motivated by the lack of openness in mobile systems at the platform level. For example, Android is known to be an open platform since the source code is open; thirdparty developers easily access and modify the source. However, when it comes to deploying their platform-level modifications, there is a stiff barrier. Only Google and other mobile vendors such as Samsung, LG, etc. have the privilege to distribute platform modifications at a large scale. In other words, there are only a select few players who can control the innovation on Android.
