Current browser-level security solutions do not provide a mechanism for information flow control (IFC) policies. As such, they need to be combined with language-based security approaches. Practical implementations for ICF enforcement remains a challenge when the full spectrum of web applications features is taken into account (i.e. JavaScript features, web APIs, DOM, portability, performance, etc.). In this work we develop GIFC, a permissive-upgrade-based inlined monitoring mechanism to detect unwanted information flow in web applications. GIFC covers a wide range of JavaScript features that give rise to implicit flows. In contrast to related work, GIFC also handles dynamic code evaluation online, and it features an API function model mechanism that enables information tracking through APIs calls. As a result, GIFC can handle information flows that use DOM nodes as channels of information. We validate GIFC by means of a benchmark suite from literature specifically designed for information flow verification, which we also extend. We compare GIFC qualitatively with respect to closest related work and show that GIFC performs better at detecting unwanted implicit flows.

This research work ascertained the effect of Visual Basic (VBasic) programming Instructional Delivery using Web-Based Tools on Students' Interest and Academic Achievement in Universities in Nigeria. The purpose of the study is to determine the effect of Visual Basic (VBasic) programming Instructional Delivery using Web-Based Tools on Students' Interest and Academic Achievement in Universities in Nigeria. The study embraced a quasi-experimental research design. The respondent for this study comprised 74 students in year two of Alex Ekwueme Federal University, Ndu-ufu Alike and Ebonyi State University, Abakaliki. For the fact that the population is small and manageable, the entire population were studied. Researchers used VBasic programming Achievement Test (VBPAT) instrument developed to collect data. Visual Basic Achievement Test contained 50-item questions with letter A to D options for each interest scale were used for data collection. The reliability was tested using Cronbach's Alpha. To ensure consistency and integrity, lecturers in the study area. The researchers trained the lecturers on how to distribute the instrument for both the experiment and control groups in order to ensure homogeneous instruction. The lecturers taught the experimental group using the utilization of a web-based approach and the control group using the conventional approach. Scores generated from the experimental test using Visual Basic programming Achievement Test (V + B + PAT), were analysed using mean and analysis of covariance (ANCOVA) for answering research questions and to test hypotheses respectively at 0.5 level of significance with the aid of statistical package for social science (SPSS) version 20. The aim of this study is to analyze the typical process of the practical part of software development courses at universities and to evaluate whether the current process meets the expectations of students or whether the needs of students would be better met by the benefits of automated code feedback. A semiautomated survey was conducted in German, involving bachelor students from different universities who had attended an introductory programming class within the last 6 semesters. The results clearly show that the students would like to have individual assignments instead of the due to time constraints, usual group exercises as they see more advantages for their learning progress. The use of automated code feedback could not only solve this time problem but would also bring other benefits.

An interactive computer model for coriolis demonstrations

The coriolis effect can be a difficult concept for students to understand, particularly in large classes where the effectiveness of physical demonstrations is limited by visibility. We developed a fully interactive computer visualization aimed at introductory undergraduate and precollege students based on the physical demonstration of a marble rolling across a turntable. The marble's velocity, turntable angular velocity and direction, and friction between the marble and the surface can be controlled to allow significant instructional flexibility. Pre and post demonstration student surveys indicate that the application improved student understanding of the coriolis effect, and the use of this type of demonstration was favorably received by the students. This program is written in the free, open-source Python programming language, specifically with the VPython module, which makes three-dimensional, physically-based, real-time visualizations efficiently programmable for geoscience demonstrations by non-professional programmers.

Scientific software is defined as software that is used to analyze data to investigate unanswered research questions in the scientific community. Developers use programming languages such as Julia to build scientific software. When programming with Julia, developers experience program execution time discrepancy i.e. not obtaining desired program execution time, which hinders them to efficiently complete their tasks. The goal of this paper is to help developers in achieving desired program execution time for Julia by identifying the causes of why program execution time discrepancies happen with an empirical study of Stack Overflow posts. We conduct an empirical study with 263 Julia-related posts collected from Stack Overflow, and apply qualitative analysis on the collected 263 posts. We identify 9 categories of program execution time discrepancies for Julia, which include discrepancies related to data structures usage such as, arrays and dictionaries. We also identify 10 causes that explain why the program execution time discrepancies happen. For example, we identify program execution time discrepancy to happen when developers unnecessarily allocate memory by using array comprehension.

Graph analysis is a critical task in many fields, such as social networking, epidemiology, bioinformatics, and fraud detection. In particular, understanding and inferring relationships between graph elements lies at the core of many graph-based workloads. Real-world graph workloads and their associated data structures create irregular computational patterns that complicate the realization of high-performance kernels. Given these complications, there does not exist a de facto "best" architecture, language, or algorithmic approach that simultaneously balances performance, energy efficiency, portability, and productivity. In this paper, we realize different algorithms of edge-connected Jaccard similarity for graph link prediction and characterize their performance across a broad spectrum of graphs on an Intel Stratix 10 FPGA. By utilizing a high-level synthesis (HLS)-driven, high-productivity approach (via the C++-based SYCL language) we rapidly prototype two implementations - a from-scratch edge-centric version and a faithfully-ported commodity GPU implementation - which would have been intractable via a hardware description language. With these implementations, we further consider the benefit and necessity of four HLS-enabled optimizations, both in isolation and in concert - totaling seven distinct synthesized hardware pipelines. Leveraging real-world graphs of up to 516 million edges, we show empirically-measured speedups of up to 9.5 x over the initial HLS implementations when all optimizations work in concert.

Combining Webduino programming With Situated Learning to Promote Computational Thinking, Motivation, and Satisfaction Among High School Students

Many countries have incorporated computational thinking (CT) and programming languages into their science and technology courses. Students can improve their CT ability by learning programming languages. Moreover, situated learning enables students to generate knowledge and master problem-solving skills through interaction with situations. This study incorporated Webduino learning and the situated learning strategy into a programming course and analyzed its impact on high school students' CT ability, learning motivation, and course satisfaction. A quasi-experimental research method was adopted, wherein the experimental group was subjected to the situated learning strategy and the control group was subjected to a traditional teaching method. The study results revealed that integrating Webduino programming with situated learning could effectively improve five categories of CT skills;moreover, the activity models of situated learning enhanced the value and expectation dimensions of learning motivation. In addition, satisfaction with the course content and self-identity slightly improved. However, because teachers were required to elaborate on stories to promote learner engagement with life situations, the time available for programming was limited. Thus, no significant difference was observed in teaching satisfaction.

Active learning is considered by many academics as an important and effective learning strategy. Assessment is integrated in learning as a tool for learning, but traditional assessment methods often encourage surface learning (passive learning) rather than deep learning (active learning). Peer assessment is a method of motivating students, involving students discussing, marking and providing feedback on other students' work, and is one of the successful approaches which can be used to enhance deep learning. Students are required to think critically about what they are learning during the peer assessment process. Tutors' marking is usually accepted as reliable, but student peers' marking in a peer assessment process is suspect. As part of a study investigating whether peer assessment can be an accurate assessment method in a computer programming course, a novel web-based peer assessment tool has been developed. In this paper, we describe the tool and report the results of evaluating the tool through experiments involving large programming classes. The results suggest that computer-mediated peer assessment is a valuable assessment approach which promotes active learning and is an accurate assessment method in a programming course.

In the recent years the search for scalability in terms of computing power has led to very complex parallel computer architectures which require greater control of the storage and computation resources to utilize all the available hardware capacity for optimal performance. New solutions in the level of programming languages/models have increased the reliance and need for threads. A system with a huge number of threads can face problems with thread micro-management, smooth scaling between data and task parallelism, portability, and consistency. We present TCF++, a new concurrent C/C++ language extension generalizing on the idea of threads with so called thick control flows. Opposed to threading, thick control flows provide a way to orchestrate computation using lower number of independent actors, dynamically adapting to problem size. The language extension approach is chosen to support mixing with legacy code. We qualitatively analyze the new language's eligibility and explain its idiomatic use with a selection of core parallel algorithm kernels.

The programming language PEARL has by far the most distinctive real-time properties, which is why it has excellently proven itself in industrial automation applications. The main features of the language and its support for distributed systems are presented. As the first universally applicable textual programming language, PEARL offers safety-related subsets suitable for each of the four internationally standardised safety integrity levels, as well as special language constructs to formulate safe sequence controls. Parts of PEARL can already be used for specification purposes due to their inherent clarity, unambiguity and direct comprehensibility.
