MPI as a programming model for High-Performance Reconfigurable Computers

High-Performance Reconfigurable Computers (HPRCs) consist of one or more standard microprocessors tightly-coupled with one or more reconfigurable FPGAs. HPRCs have been shown to provide good speedups and good cost/performance ratios, but not necessarily ease of use, leading to a slow acceptance of this technology. HPRCs introduce new design challenges, such as the lack of portability across platforms, incompatibilities with legacy code, users reluctant to change their code base, a prolonged learning curve, and the need for a system-level Hardware/Software co-design development flow. This article presents the evolution and current work on TMD-MPI, which started as an MPI-based programming model for Multiprocessor Systems-on-Chip implemented in FPGAs, and has now evolved to include multiple X86 processors. TMD-MPI is shown to address current design challenges in HPRC usage, suggesting that the MPI standard has enough syntax and semantics to program these new types of parallel architectures. Also presented is the TMD-MPI Ecosystem, which consists of research projects and tools that are developed around TMD-MPI to further improve HPRC usability. Finally, we present preliminary communication performance measurements.

SHMEM+: A Multilevel-PGAS programming model for Reconfigurable Supercomputing

Reconfigurable Computing (RC) systems based on FPGAs are becoming an increasingly attractive solution to building parallel systems of the future. Applications targeting such systems have demonstrated superior performance and reduced energy consumption versus their traditional counterparts based on microprocessors. However, most of such work has been limited to small system sizes. Unlike traditional HPC systems, lack of integrated, system-wide, parallel-programming models and languages presents a significant design challenge for creating applications targeting scalable, reconfigurable HPC systems. In this article, we extend the traditional Partitioned Global Address Space (PGAS) model to provide a multilevel integration of memory, which simplifies development of parallel applications for such systems and improves developer productivity. The new multilevel-PGAS programming model captures the unique characteristics of reconfigurable HPC systems, such as the existence of multiple levels of memory hierarchy and heterogeneous computation resources. Based on this model, we extend and adapt the SHMEM communication library to become what we call SHMEM+, the first known SHMEM library enabling coordination between FPGAs and CPUs in a reconfigurable, heterogeneous HPC system. Applications designed with SHMEM+ yield improved developer productivity compared to current methods of multidevice RC design and exhibit a high degree of portability. In addition, our design of SHMEM+ library itself is portable and provides peak communication bandwidth comparable to vendor-proprietary versions of SHMEM. Application case studies are presented to illustrate the advantages of SHMEM+.

Today's dominant design for the Internet of Things (loT) is a Cloud-based system, where devices transfer their data to a back-end and in return receive instructions on how to act. This view is challenged when delays caused by communication with the back-end become an obstacle for loT applications with, for example, stringent timing constraints. In contrast, Fog Computing approaches, where devices communicate and orchestrate their operations collectively and closer to the origin of data, lack adequate tools for programming secure interactions between humans and their proximate devices at the network edge. This paper fills the gap by applying Action-Oriented programming (AcOP) model for this task. While originally the AcOP model was proposed for Cloud-based infrastructures, presently it is re-designed around the notion of coalescence and disintegration, which enable the devices to collectively and autonomously execute their operations in the Fog by serving humans in a peer-to-peer fashion. The Cloud's role has been minimized-it is being leveraged as a development and deployment platform.(C) 2019 The Authors. Published by Elsevier Inc.

SysCellC: a data-flow programming model on multi-GPU

High performance computing with low cost machines becomes a reality with GPU. Unfortunately, high performances are achieved when the programmer exploits the architectural specificities of the GPU processors: he has to focus on inter-GPU communications, task allocations among the GPUs, task scheduling, external memory prefetching, and synchronization. In this paper, we propose and evaluate a compile flow. It automates the transformation of a program expressed with the high level system design language SystemC, to its implementation on a cluster of multi-GPU. SystemC constructs and scheduler are directly mapped to the GPU API, preserving their semantic. Inter-GPU communications are abstracted by means of SystemC channels.

A mathematical model for all matter-energy processing subsystems at the level of the society, specifically India, is presented. India''s choices in the food and energy sectors over the coming decades are explored. Alternative land intensive, irrigation energy intensive and fertilizer intensive techniques of food production are identified using a nonlinear programming model. The land saved is devoted to growing firewood. The optimum combination of railway (steam, diesel and electric traction) and road (automobiles, diesel trucks and diesel and gasoline buses) transport is determined. For the oil sector, 2 alternative sources of supply of crude oil and petroleum products are included, namely, domestic production and imports. The optimum choice is determined through a linear programming model. While the model is basically a static one, designed to determine the optimal choice for the target year of 2000-2001, certain intertemporal detail is incorporated for electricity generation. The model minimizes the costs of meeting the needs for food, transport in terms of passenger km and goods/ton per k, energy needs for domestic cooking and lighting and the energy needs of the rest of the economy.

To obtain a good trade-off between accuracy and the computational load of WCDMA (wideband code-division multiple access) network planning and optimisation, link-level performance factors such as the impact of soft handover and fast power control need to be taken into account in system-level simulations. However, they have not been investigated together in previous works. In this paper, we propose a mixed integer programming model considering these factors in both uplink and downlink, and present optimisation strategies based on three meta-heuristics, namely simulated annealing (SA), evolutionary SA (ESA) and variable neighbourhood search (VNS). The base station location problem is modelled as a simplified p-median problem. Experimental results are provided to compare the performance of different algorithms with respect to the solution quality and the level of robustness.

Acting as an entirely new Internet application model, Cloud computing will be the leading way to access services and information in the near future. The thesis focuses on the definition of Cloud computing and its application occasions;puts forward six technical advantages on the basis of the beginning of its technical features;analyses the programming and task scheduling model according to the present-used cloud computing system. Examples are applied to explain the process of programming and its modifying directions, as well as the process within which services and resources exchange. For the explanation of Cloud computing, how social network may increase the Qos through changing the service load will be discussed. The development of Cloud computing is estimated in the end of the thesis.

programming models for cloud computing has been a research focus recently. Current programming models for cloud computing mainly focus on improving the efficiency of the cloud computing platforms but little has been done on the performance predictability of models. This paper presents a cloud computing programming model, called BSPCloud. The BSPCloud has the advantages of predictable performance. BSPCloud uses a hybrid of distributed-memory and shared-memory bulk synchronous parallel (BSP) programming model. Computing tasks are first divided into a set of coarse granularity bulks which are computed by the distributed-memory BSP model, and each coarse granularity bulk is further divided into a set of bulk threads which are computed by the shared-memory BSP model. BSPCloud makes full use of the multi-core architecture, and more importantly, the performance of the BSPCloud is predictable. We have implemented a proof-of-concept BSPCloud parallel programming library in java. We give the implementation of BSPCloud parallel programming library and show how the library implements hybrid programming. We detail applying the BSPCloud library on matrix multiplication. The performance predictability and speedup are evaluated in the cloud platform. We give the results of experiments.

Insect Intelligent Building is a flat and distributed new Building Intelligent System, whose tasks need be solved in parallel. How to develop parallel programs quickly and efficiently for it has become an important research content. However, the general parallel programming method lacks the domain characteristics of Insect Intelligent Building, and pay too much attention to the complex interaction between nodes. This leads to more difficulty in programming. This paper focuses on the "master-slave distributed tasks" that is a kind of typical task in Insect Intelligent Building, and proposes a programming model. This programming model defines some new programming elements such as "Domain", "Master CPN", and "Slave CPN", and hides underlying details of data propagation and aggregation between nodes. It effectively reduces the programming difficulty of "master-slave distributed tasks". In the case study, the programming model is applied to a tap water control system and the results show that it has high robustness and portability and be easy to use.
