Undergraduate students of a Software Engineering degree must be able to select the appropriate paradigm to solve a problem. They must also be able to know the foundations of concurrent and parallel programming. In the Software Engineering degree taught in the University of Oviedo, both competencies were assigned to the programming Technology and paradigms course. In this article, we present the approach we followed in the design of that course to teach object-oriented, functional, concurrent and parallel programming to second year undergraduate students with basic knowledge of Java. Due to the time limitations of the course, the proposed design uses one single programming language besides Java. We describe the most important challenges we faced and how we addressed them.

Digital computers that automate manufacturing process are an important aspect for any manufacturing engineers in the modern world. Selection of the programming paradigm (PP), as well as the programming language (PL) that supports it, is crucial to ensure the correct ideas are being used to automate the solution of the problem. In current Malaysian Higher institution practices, various PPs and PLs courses are offered to current undergraduate manufacturing majors. An online survey was deployed to experienced manufacturing engineers from various manufacturing specializations in the industry. Graduates from one of Malaysia's public universities, International Islamic University Malaysia (HUM) have been chosen for this particular study. From the survey, it has been found that almost 80% of the participants agreed that PPs are important for manufacturing graduates. It was found out that 90% of the participants were from intermediate (scale of 3) until poor (scale of 1) to express their ability to explain PPs if asked. Only about 10% are able to explain on PPs (scale of 4 and 5). The study concluded that majority of the manufacturing graduates from HUM agreed that PP is an important subject to be taught in university. However, it was found the majority of the manufacturing graduates lack the knowledge and understanding of PPs and general PLs.

This article aims to explore and classify the programming paradigms (PPs) used in programming languages (PLs). It consists of four parts: a brief introduction, an experimental section analyzing 90 PLs created between 1957 and 2024 based on four criteria. The findings are presented in tables and graphs, including a catalog of PLs, a table mapping PLs to PPs and multi-paradigms, and charts showing the creation of PLs by year, relationships between PPs and PLs, and the use of multi-paradigms in PLs. The study reveals that the years 1980 and 1995 saw the highest number of PLs created. 73% of all considered PLs apply 2 or more styles, with the functional and imperative style being the most applied. © 2024 IEEE.

Scientific workflows have been used as a programming model to automate scientific tasks ranging from short pipelines to complex workflows that span across heterogeneous data and computing resources. While utilization of scientific workflow technologies varies slightly across different scientific disciplines, all informatics and computational science disciplines provide a common set of attributes to facilitate and accelerate workflow-driven research. Scientific workflows provide assembly of complex processing easily in local or distributed environments via rich and expressive programming models. Scientific workflows enable transparent access to diverse resources ranging from local clusters and traditional supercomputers to elastic and heterogeneous Cloud resources. Scientific workflows support incorporation of multiple software tools including domain specific tools for standard processing to custom generalized workflows and middleware tools that can be reused in various contexts. Scientific workflows often collect provenance information on workflow entities, e.g., workflow definitions, their executions and run time parameters, and, in turn, assure a level of reproducibility while enabling referencing and replicating results. While doing all these, scientific workflows often foster an open-source, open-access and standards-driven community development model based on sharing and collaborations. Cyberinfrastructure platforms and gateways commonly employ scientific workflows to bridge the gap between the infrastructure and users needs. While capturing and communicating the scientific process formally, workflows ensure flexibility, synergy between users, provide optimized usage of resources, increase reuse and ensure compliance with system specific data models and community-driven standards. Currently, scientific workflows are used widely in life sciences at different stages of end-to-end 'data lifecycle from generation to analysis and publication of biological data. The

Fault localization is to identify faulty program elements. Among a large number of fault localization approaches in the literature, coverage-based fault localization, especially spectrum-based fault localization (SBFL), has been intensively studied due to its effectiveness and lightweightness. Despite the rich literature, almost all existing fault localization approaches and studies have been conducted on imperative programming languages such as Java and C, leaving a gap in other programming paradigms. In this paper, we aim to study fault localization approaches for the functional programming paradigm, using the Haskell language as a representative. To the best of our knowledge, we build up the first dataset on real Haskell projects, including both real and seeded faults. The dataset enables the research of fault localization for functional languages. With it, we explore fault localization techniques for Haskell. In particular, as is typical for SBFL approaches, we study methods for coverage collection and formulae for suspiciousness score computation, and carefully adapt these two components to Haskell considering the language features and characteristics, resulting in a series of adaption approaches. Moreover, we design a learning-based approach and a transfer learning based approach to take advantage of data from imperative languages. Both approaches are evaluated on our dataset to demonstrate the promises of the direction.

The research on paradigms in audio and music programming is an ongoing endeavor. However, although new audio programming paradigms have been created, already established paradigms did prevail and dominate major music production systems. Our research aims at the question, how programming paradigms and music production interacts. We describe the implementation process of an imperative algorithm calculating the greatest common divisor (gcd) in Pure Data and exemplify common problems of transformational processes between an imperative paradigm and a patch-paradigm. Having a closer look at related problems in research on programming paradigms in general, we raise the question of how constraints and boundaries of paradigms play a role in the design process of a program. With the deliberation on selected papers within the context of computer science, we give insight into different views of how the process of programming can be thought and how certain domains of application demand a specific paradigm.

The purpose of this panel is to confront the wide variety of opinions on the role of language paradigms in teaching programming. We have selected four divergent opinions:Armstrong says that concurrent programming is considered difficult because it is taught in the wrong paradigm, namely imperative or object-oriented programming. Instead, concurrency should be taught using a paradigm that makes it *** says that everyone should be taught how to program, not just computer science majors. Further, programming should be taught as an extension of what students already know, which is algebra. More important than a particular paradigm, however, is teaching students a design *** says that object-oriented programming must be the first and principal paradigm, because it is best for teaching how to analyze problems and structure solutions. Other paradigms can be taught after students have a solid understanding of *** Roy says that programming should be taught in terms of concepts, not paradigms. Common paradigms (functional, OO, etc.) then appear naturally, depending on the concepts used.

In the late 1960s, tensions were erupting in corporate and academic computing cultures in the United States and abroad with competing views about the state of computer programming and possible future implications. This article examines the computer programming cultures during this period by viewing them through the lens of two dissimilar leaders, Grace Hopper and Edsger Dijkstra, who emphasized pragmatic versus theoretical stances, respectively.

Loihi is Intel's novel, manycore neuromorphic processor and is the first of its kind to feature a microcode-programmable learning engine that enables on-chip training of spiking neural networks (SNNs). The authors present the Loihi toolchain, which consists of an intuitive Python-based API for specifying SNNs, a compiler and runtime library for building and executing SNNs on Loihi, and several target platforms (Loihi silicon, FPGA, and functional simulator). To showcase the toolchain, the authors describe how to build, train, and use an SNN to classify handwritten digits from the MNIST database.

This paper contains a discussion of striking similarities between influential philosophical concepts of the past and the approaches currently employed in selected areas of computer science. In particular, works of the Pythagoreans, Plato, Abelard, Ash'arites, Malebranche and Berkeley are presented and contrasted with such computer science ideas as digital computers, object-oriented programming, the modelling of an object's actions and causality in virtual environments, and 3D graphics rendering. The intention of this paper is to provoke the computer science community to go off the beaten path in order to find inspiration for the development of new approaches in software engineering.
