In the paper a new approach for modeling Java program variants (versions) is proposed, which is focused on increasing the level of software reuse, rather than on enriching data model. The proposed language called JavaContexts provides various mechanisms for object (class) persistency, thus it needs an underlying database system for reliable and efficient object storage and access. In the approach proposed, a program (database application) is composed of a program body and a set of logically independent program contexts. The program body contains global classes. Each program context contains exactly one variant of every class not belonging to the program badly called a context class. Variants of the same class belonging to different contexts need not be different. During the program execution only one context is active. It may be, however, changed dynamically at the program run-time. Thus, at a particular moment of time the program is viewed as a sum of the program body and exactly one program context. JavaContexts preserves Java homogeneity, since all new concepts proposed in this paper are modeled as classes and objects.

The study for degree of Bachelor in Computer science at our Department lasts four years and besides other subjects, offers several interconnected core courses in programming: Introduction to programming, Data structures and algorithms 1 and 2, Operating systems and Compiler construction. The intention in these courses is to put emphasizes on abstract structures and not to insist on particular realization in specific programming language or to use different languages in different courses. In order to avoid teaching many languages and various environments, it was decided to choose one language that is easy to teach and good for development of correct programming style. Chosen language has to be flexible enough to support teaching the different principles, methods and techniques.

We articulate a vision for computer programming that includes pen-based computing, a paradigm we term notational programming. Notational programming blurs contexts: certain typewritten variables can be referenced in handwritten notation and vice-versa. To illustrate this paradigm, we developed an extension, Notate, to computational notebooks which allows users to open drawing canvases within lines of code. As a case study, we explore quantum programming and designed a notation, Qaw, that extends quantum circuit notation with abstraction features, such as variable-sized wire bundles and recursion. Results from a usability study with novices suggest that users find our core interaction of implicit cross-context references intuitive, but suggests further improvements to debugging infrastructure, interface design, and recognition rates. Throughout, we discuss questions raised by the notational paradigm, including a shift from 'recognition' of notations to 'reconfiguration' of practices and values around programming, and from 'sketching' to writing and drawing, or what we call 'notating.'

Data distribution in embedded real-time sensor networks requires new protocols and programming environments that achieve time-sensitive message delivery and provide useful abstractions to the application programmer Attainment of these goals requires changes to multiple layers of the communication protocol stack. In this paper we review a protocol suite developed by the authors for data communication in embedded sensor networks. It takes into account time constraints and exports attribute-based connections that are tightly integrated with properties of the monitored environment. A programming language is described that allows external physical objects to be represented as first class abstractions in the computing system. The language facilitates writing monitoring applications. The system was implemented on a prototypical sensor network based on MICA motes.

Erlang applications comprise numerous processes-lightweight user-space threads-that communicate via message passing. This article focuses on Erlang's concurrency support and details an example 1D Poisson solver program.

Executing large number of independent jobs or jobs comprising of large number of tasks that perform minimal intertask communication is a common requirement in many domains. Various technologies ranging from classic job schedulers to the latest cloud technologies such as MapReduce can be used to execute these "many-tasks" in parallel. In this paper, we present our experience in applying two cloud technologies Apache Hadoop and Microsoft DryadLINQ to two bioinformatics applications with the above characteristics. The applications are a pairwise Alu sequence alignment application and an Expressed Sequence Tag (EST) sequence assembly program. First, we compare the performance of these cloud technologies using the above applications and also compare them with traditional MPI implementation in one application. Next, we analyze the effect of inhomogeneous data on the scheduling mechanisms of the cloud technologies. Finally, we present a comparison of performance of the cloud technologies under virtual and nonvirtual hardware platforms.

Providing new services by combining existing ones—or service composition—is an idea pervading pervasive computing. Pervasive computing technologies seek to concurrently exhibit context awareness, manage contingencies, leverage device heterogeneity, and empower users. These four goals prompt service-composition-mechanism design requirements that are unique to pervasive computing. This article catalogs service composition mechanisms and describes their variation points, which indicate how well the resulting compositions meet the four goals.

The transition from a code-based process to a model-based process isn't easy. This is particularly true for a company that operates in a safety-critical sector, where the products must be developed according to international standards, with certified tools and controlled processes. The authors summarize the experience of a railway signaling manufacturer that decided to adopt general-purpose, model-based tools—namely, Simulink/Stateflow and SysML—for product development. The company faced challenges primarily concerning the verification of the software and the integration of the tools within the existing process. Structured development solutions and formal/semiformal approaches were adopted to tackle the challenges.

New high-performance computing system designs with steeply escalating processor and core counts, burgeoning heterogeneity and accelerators, and increasingly unpredictable memory access times call for one or more dramatically new programming paradigms. These new approaches must react and adapt quickly to unexpected contentions and delays, and they must provide the execution environment with sufficient intelligence and flexibility to rearrange the execution to improve resource utilization. The authors present an approach based on task parallelism that reveals the application's parallelism by expressing its algorithm as a task flow. This strategy allows the algorithm to be decoupled from the data distribution and the underlying hardware, since the algorithm is entirely expressed as flows of data. This kind of layering provides a clear separation of concerns among architecture, algorithm, and data distribution. Developers benefit from this separation because they can focus solely on the algorithmic level without the constraints involved with programming for current and future hardware trends.
