This paper considers how the information needs of managers may be helped by the development of integrated project support environments (IPSEs). In particular the paper concentrates on the issue of obtaining quantitative information about a software product and its development process using software metrics. The nature and use of software metrics and the problems of metrics data collection are discussed in terms of the authors' experience of an already existing metrics data collection system. The paper then considers the way in which metrics collection and analysis can be incorporated into IPSEs and the requirements that metrics systems place on the design of IPSEs.

The Experimental Aircraft Programme (EAP) is a technology demonstrator project in advance of the next generation of fighter aircraft. An integrated software toolset has been established to support the development and production of software for the advanced avionic systems embedded in this aircraft. This paper presents the work undertaken and the experience gained in developing, using and supporting the EAP software toolset from project initiation to final delivery of the software for flight testing. Many of the issues pertaining to the future requirements of an integrated project support environment and the rigours imposed in delivering relliable and high-quality real-time software for embedded processors are discussed.

Newly released robot programming tools have made it feasible for end-users to program industrial robots by combining block-based languages and lead-through programming. To use these systems effectively, end-users, who usually have limited or no programming experience, require training. To train users, tutoring systems are often used for block-based programming-some even for lead-through programming-but no tutorial system combines these two types of programming. We present CoBlox Interactive Tutorials (CITs), a novel tutoring approach that teaches how to use both the hardware and software components that comprise a typical end-user robot programming environment. As users switch between the two programming styles, CITs provide them with extensive scaffolding, give users immediate feedback on missteps, and provide guidance on next steps. To evaluate CITs, we conducted a study with 79 industrial end-users using a programming environment released by ABB Robotics that compares our approach to training with training videos, the most commonly used training in industry. This study, one of the largest to date on training professional end-users, found that CIT-trained users authored more correct programs in less time than video-trained users. This shows that a tight integration of hardware and software concepts is crucial to training end-users to program industrial robots.

Cloud computing for small research groups in computational science and engineering: current status and outlook

Cloud computing could offer good business models for small computational science and engineering (CSE) research groups because these groups often do not have enough human resources and knowledge to manage the complexity of computational and data infrastructure for their research, while cloud computing aims to eliminate that complexity from the user. In this paper, we have analyzed current status of supporting tools for small CSE groups to utilize cloud computing. Although cloud computing is perceived as an interesting model, we have identified several issues that prevent a wide adoption of cloud computing from small CSE research groups. We also present recommendations for addressing these issues in order to attract small CSE groups to utilize cloud computing.

CALIBRATING ESTIMATION TOOLS FOR SOFTWARE-DEVELOPMENT

Desired improvement in the software process and product has given rise to greater use of quantitative managment techniques in software development. The use of algorithmic-based software cost estimation tools has been a part of this movement. This paper uses data collected from six commercial organisations on 112 software projects to investigate the extent to which organisations need to calibrate these tools to their own environment. It is found that calibration is mandatory if reasonable accuracy is to be obtained from the tools.

Functional testing of feature model analysis tools: a test suite

A feature model is a compact representation of all the products of a software product line. Automated analysis of feature models is rapidly gaining importance: new operations of analysis have been proposed, new tools have been developed to support those operations and different logical paradigms and algorithms have been proposed to perform them. Implementing operations is a complex task that easily leads to errors in analysis solutions. In this context, the lack of specific testing mechanisms is becoming a major obstacle hindering the development of tools and affecting their quality and reliability. In this article, the authors present FaMa test suite, a set of implementation-independent test cases to validate the functionality of feature model analysis tools. This is an efficient and handy mechanism to assist in the development of tools, detecting faults and improving their quality. In order to show the effectiveness of their proposal, the authors evaluated the suite using mutation testing as well as real faults and tools. Their results are promising and directly applicable in the testing of analysis solutions. The authors intend this work to be a first step towards the development of a widely accepted test suite to support functional testing in the community of automated analysis of feature models.

This Address introduces the tools available to produce the software for such integrated, distributed systems, and highlights the uses and deficiencies of these tools, Unless such tools are used, it is impossible to develop safe, efficient and dependable control systems, with guaranteed, correct real-time software and hardware performance.

This paper describes the support environment being developed at the University of Wales, Aberystwyth, for use in teaching software engineering. The environment provides a fully integrated tool set that will eventually support all aspects of the software life-cycle. Modes of operation are provided to suit the needs of both naive and fairly sophisticated users. The environment has been developed as far as possible by using existing software.

AUTOMATED TIMING ANALYSIS OF REAL-TIME PROGRAMS

ReStat is an interactive software tool for statically analysing the timing properties of real-time programs. Given a distributed program, a description of an architecture and a scheduling discipline, ReStat can be used to determine whether the implementation of the program on the architecture will meet a set of timing deadlines. The program may consist of a number of communicating processes and these can be statically assigned to any processor. Each process is assumed to have a simple, non-terminating cyclic structure, as is often the case in real-time control systems. ReStat uses a method of static analysis which establishes the timing properties of a real-time program by examining finite execution segments. The analysis is based on the syntactic structure of the program and can be efficiently implemented. The paper provides an overview of an experimental version of the tool and illustrates its use as a design aid by way of examples.

Clustering support and replication management for scalable network services

The ubiquity of the Internet and various intranets has brought about widespread availability of online services and applications accessible through the network. Cluster-based network services have been rapidly emerging due to their cost-effectiveness in achieving high availability and incremental scalability. This paper presents the design and implementation of the Neptune middleware System that provides clustering support and replication management for scalable network services. Neptune employs a loosely connected and functionally symmetric clustering architecture to achieve high scalability and robustness. It shields the clustering complexities from application developers through simple programming interfaces. in addition, Neptune provides, replication management with flexible replication consistency support at the clustering middleware level. Such support can be easily applied to a large number of applications with different underlying data management mechanisms or service semantics. The system has been implemented on Linux and Solaris clusters, where a number of applications have been successfully deployed. Our evaluations demonstrate the system performance and smooth failure recovery achieved by proposed techniques.
