Computer programming learning requires the acquisition of skills to design algorithms. The level of achievement of these skills depends on the student's effort involved to develop a program, as well as the final quality of the product. The level of skills that students achieve in programming courses is diverse, being able to observe significant differences in the degree of effectiveness of the solutions, as well as in the students' learning development time. This paper describes a pilot experience aimed at measuring the incidence of focused practical activities assigned by the teacher through a CMS, as well as the self regulation carried out by them. These aspects were measured and based on indicators derived from the activities carried out by the students in the CMS. The results are not statistically conclusive regarding the qualifications;however, the experience shows that it significantly improves the information available to the teacher and the student: (1) It provides the teacher with information regarding the ability of each student to solve different types of problems, at different moments during the course directly. (2) It allows the teacher to recommend activities or exercises tending to improve students' learning results, and (3)It provides the student with immediate feedback of the solution developed, to correct it when appropriate. The Bureau of Labor Statistics forecasts that approximately 175,100 software engineering jobs will be created between 2008 and 2018. In order to fill these positions, new computer scientists, who enjoy and are competent in the art of programming and software design, must be trained. Computer science departments must look for novel approaches to attract non-traditional students, i.e. women and minorities, to the major, in order to fill the positions predicted by the Bureau of Labor Statistics. Additionally, although computer science enrollment has increased in the freshman and sophomore levels over the past few years, computer science departments are still faced with identifying new approaches to teaching programming that will retain students, particularly if some of them have weak mathematics backgrounds and are placed directly in CS1. In this paper, a study to determine the effectiveness of a CS0 course using Scratch for improving the retention, the performance and the attitudes of at-risk majors is discussed. Initial assessments associated with the study indicate that students of the target group who program using Scratch have a high degree of perceived self-efficacy with respect to their programming abilities. Furthermore, results to date indicate that the originally at-risk students in the study went on to successfully complete CS1 with a passing rate of 74% compared to a 39% passing rate in CS1 by the students who had sufficiently high mathematics scores upon entry into the university.

This Research to Practice Full Paper presents a pedagogical practice for technical high school students for developing Computational Thinking (CT) abilities through Internet of Things technologies. The covered topics in our proposal include (i) the use of temperature and humidity sensors for data collection, treatment and visualization using Arduino and micro-controllers;(ii) Smart and Human Cities (SHC) and Open Data concepts, in order to lead the students to reflect on the problems of their city and on data protection. Our motivation to our proposal is due to the educational processes have to develop criticality and the ability to solve problems among students. In this context, CT has been used for this through the use of robotics, game building or unplugged computing. On the other hand, technologies for implementing Internet of Things (IoT) have been used in several domains of society, including cities transformation. One important aspect in this scenario is data generation, which have to be carefully tackled by government's and who develop solutions to SHC. In this way, using IoT for teaching CT is an important aspect, also considering open data, privacy and SHC context. In our pedagogical practice, students were able to design and develop solutions to problems in their daily lives indirectly applying CT skills, such as decomposition, pattern recognition, abstraction, automation and analysis, as well as self-skills, collaboration, creativity and critically, required nowadays in broad professional training. It was also possible to develop students' interest in raising awareness of the use of computational technologies, as a solution to problems in society considering aspects of SHC and open data;propose a technological solution using IoT;and analyze the use of these data collected for the social well-being. Nowadays, using interactive video and computer games for educational purposes has become a popular subject of study. Recent empirical studies underline the fact that video games may contribute to the educational process. As programming and logical reasoning are concepts that quite a few high school students find hard to cope with, alternative approaches of teaching them should be explored. The use of Rapid Digital Game Creation (RDGC) for developing Computational Thinking (ComT) skills moves away the frame from simply getting programming knowledge on a specific language, having previously spent a large amount of time in the learning of its syntax, and gives students a boost while stimulating them through the development of interesting applications. Such interesting applications are games, as they can give students the opportunity to experiment their knowledge and to develop ComT skills, while at the same time can have fun. This paper presents an approach to incorporate games, multimedia and programming in order to motivate, help understand and improve analysis, synthesis and algorithmic skills. This approach took place as part of the educational process in a high school class with children at the age of 17-18 years, during "Multimedia" course. According to this approach, two types of projects were used. Firstly, a simplified demo version of a well known game was presented, and students had to reconstruct it from the beginning, with the same functionality. In the second project type, the rules of the game and the description of the behavior of the various actors in natural language, along with a demo version of a new game were given to them. The students were asked to reproduce the given demo, by using the RAD environment. This paper also presents a study that came through a process of an evaluation questionnaire answered by the students.

The growth of the mobile device market has generated a demand for specific applications and the consequent need for labor training to develop them. Such demand has as a direct consequence, a growing need for training of application developers. This work presents the use of the active learning methodology Challenge Based Learning (CBL) for the teaching of software development for mobile devices. The use of CBL for little more than a year in four classes of a free course with 110 students is presented. Some difficulties appeared and were solved with proposed actions. The results are obtained from objective and subjective evaluations and analyzed through thematic networks. Among the positive results CBL helps in understanding the problems to be solved and in its solution and has motivated students more than other methods. CBL showed to be an interesting active learning methodology for teaching Mobile Software Development and promising to be applied in other areas.

The mobile market is growing every year, creating a demand for mission-critical and innovative enterprises, and personal applications. This demand implies the need for skills training necessary for students to enter the professional development market. The Innovation, Development and teaching in Complex Software Environments approach (IDEAS) was developed for the training of mobile developers to meet this need, through an innovative process for student selection, training through the active methodology Challenge Based Learning, software production, and startups creation. The approach was created through action-research applied during two cycles of a real project in a university environment, where 398 students applied for the first cycle, of which 110 were selected, and 900 applied for the second cycle, of which 100 were selected. We undertook evaluations with students and teachers through periodic reflections, questionnaires, and interviews at the end of each cycle. Some of the positive results included the prominence of 125 professional-looking apps that were finalized and published, report of dropout reduction and disapproval in the programming courses and experience in entrepreneurship and pre-acceleration startup program.

This full research paper presents a systematic literature review on adaptive learning in programming education. Learning how to program is a process that requires the ability to solve problems through logical reasoning. In the field of computer science education, various courses are focused on teaching programming. Research has been conducted to evaluate students' learning processes and the reasons for their dropouts in computer science courses. Students have individualized learning speeds and characteristics. The heterogeneity of student characteristics creates a difficulty in adapting the content taught in class, as it is necessary to generalize the approach in the classroom. To achieve this, approaches have used Adaptive Learning (AL) to adapt content according to the student's profile. Resources such as Learning Objects (LO), which can be games, quizzes, interactive experiences, videos, images, etc., are used to achieve this goal. Different authors have conducted studies on Adaptive Learning using algorithms, Human-Computer Interaction techniques, and other forms to analyze students' learning processes. Therefore, it is necessary to identify how Adaptive Learning has been applied to programming education in the existing literature studies. In addition, to characterize the learning styles and metrics used to evaluate these applied methods. Fifty-three articles from the last ten years related to the research objective were selected using the ACM Library, IEEExplore libraries, and Scopus. From these studies, we verified the main LO recommendation methods that use different approaches, such as Item Response Theory, Case-Based Reasoning - CBR, IEEE LOM, genetic algorithms, among others. As well as the learning styles become used, where Felder and Silverman's learning style stands out. In the analyzed studies, the LO that gained more prominence in the research were videos, both media produced by teachers on a local database and video lessons available on video-sharing
