The Hitchhiker's Guide to Software Languages

There is only that much space in the CS curriculum, and there are always new subjects that should be accommodated by the curriculum. For instance, in our community, we would want all graduates to leave university with a modest background in technical spaces, software languages, and meta-programming;also, with conceptually informed and reasonably timeless skills to efficiently master related programming techniques and technologies. In reality, the curricula of few CS departments meet this expectation. In this talk, I will discuss such curricula-related expectations of our community and the suboptimal situation at CS departments-as I perceive them. More importantly, I will allude to a revision of the CS curriculum that could optimize matters and may stand a chance for mid-term adoption.

Magic Potion: Incorporating New Development Paradigms through Metaprogramming

Today\'s applications require mixing and matching languages, platforms, and paradigms, which increases a solution\'s complexity. The authors propose a lighter approach that borrows a desired paradigm and incorporates it as an integral part of a preferred development environment. They\'ve applied metaprogramming to internalize the ontology-modeling paradigm into a programming environment that\'s based on the Java ecosystem. Their method is also lightweight and suitable for small teams. They implemented an embedded domain-specific metalanguage, called Magic Potion, in the Clojure development environment, where it blends ontology, functional, object-oriented, and concurrent paradigms.

An Open-Source Java Platform for Automated Reaction Mapping

This article presents software applications that have been built upon a modular, open-source, reaction mapping library that can be used in both cheminformatics and bioinformatics research. We first describe the theoretical underpinnings and modular architecture of the core software library. We then describe two applications that have been built upon that core. The first is a generic reaction viewer and mapper, and the second classifies reactions according to rules that can be modified by end users with little or no programming skills.

With interest in virtual reality (VR) technologies, techniques, and devices growing at a quick pace, many researchers in areas such as psychology or cognitive neuroscience want to use VR. The software and VR systems available today do not support the skill sets or experimental requirements of this group of users. We describe a number of concerns and requirements that researchers express and focus on the extent to which today's VR systems support non-VR experts. The work then concludes with a number of suggestions and potential development avenues that should be undertaken to ensure that VR systems are usable by a large range of researchers, regardless of their programming skills or technical backgrounds.

Proper development of Computer Science analytical programming skills requires rigorous practice sessions with problem sets and coding exercises, but this is often not a priority for many students. Digital educational games have been shown to increase the appeal of repetitive instructional tasks however many of these games fail to capitalize on the power of cultural motivators. In this paper, we investigate a novel approach towards game design, a culturally-enriched approach that deliberately plays up the strengths of culture as a motivational trigger and instructional stimulant. The research presented illustrates how powerful motivational hooks were created in an educational gaming environment for developing analytical programming skills through subtle, careful use of cultural elements. An experiment conducted using the game revealed modest gains in the debugging skills of 77% of the student participants, and a strong relationship between length of gameplay and increase in analytical skill. Furthermore, a strong relationship was found linking the degree of cultural game feedback to positive student affect towards programming exercises thereby validating the utility of our approach.

The article discusses a case study of parallelizing the Bzip2 program for multicore software engineering. Graduate computer science students participated, working in independent teams of two to parallelize Bzip2 in a competition. The strategies used by the teams are described, including the use of a mixture of OpenMP and PThreads. It indicates that parallelizing a sequential program might not be possible right way. Refactorings improve code modularity and remove unnecessary data dependencies.
