GPUBlocks: GUI programming tool for CUDA and OpenCL

Recent advances in general-purpose graphics processing units (GPGPUs) have resulted in massively parallel hardware that is widely available to achieve high performance in desktop, notebook, and even mobile computer systems. While multicore technology has become the norm of modern computers, programming such systems requires the understanding of underlying hardware architecture and hence posts a great challenge for average programmers, who might be professionals in specific domains, but not experts in parallel programming. This paper presents a GUI tool called GPUBlocks that can facilitate parallel programming on multicore computer systems. GPUBlocks is developed based on the OpenBlocks framework, an extendable tool for graphical programming, to construct the GUI-based programming environment for CUDA and OpenCL parallel computing platforms. Programmers simply need to drag-n-drop blocks, fill the fields of the blocks, and connect them according to array or matrix computations that are specified by algorithms. GPUBlocks can then translate block-based code to CUDA or OpenCL programs. Furthermore, a couple of optimization constructs have also been offered for rapid program optimization. Experimental results have shown that the generated CUDA and OpenCL programs can achieve reasonable speedups on GPUs. Consequently, GPUBlocks can be used as a tool for fast prototyping of GPU applications or a platform for educational parallel programming.

We focus on application of abstract network protocols towards prototyping sensor networks. Such abstract programs exist for several applications, e.g., routing, tracking, dissemination, etc. These programs are often specified in terms of event-driven actions where the program responds to actions in the environment or previous actions taken by the program. Hence, they are easy to specify, verify and manipulate. However, they cannot be applied directly in sensor networks as the computation model in sensor networks (write all with collision) differs from that (read/write or shared memory) used in abstract programs. Towards this end, we propose ProSe, a programming tool that enables the designers to (1) specify protocols in simple, abstract models, (2) reuse existing fault-tolerant/self-stabilizing protocols from the literature, and (3) automatically generate and deploy code. ProSe hides the deficiencies of existing programming platforms that require the designers to explicitly deal with buffer management, stack management, and flow control. As a result, we expect that ProSe will enable rapid prototyping and quick deployment of protocols.

We developed P-CUBE, which is an education tool for programming mobile robots, and confirmed the system operation. Elementary school and junior high school students have recently begun to learn programming using PCs. Students who are taught how to create programs are often required to use an interface of a personal computer. This method keeps visually impaired and younger children from learning programming. Furthermore, the cost associated with PCs is often prohibitive. In an attempt to address these problems, we have developed P-CUBE, which is a new programming education tool. P-CUBE consists of cubic blocks and a program mat. The user creates a program by laying out surface gap blocks on the program mat based on the structure of the algorithm. RFID readers are arranged in the programming mat, and the information of the RFID tags in the blocks is read in order to specify the location of each block. P-CUBE is considered to be nearly indestructible because of its simple structure and is expected to be used as an educational toy for students.

Introductory computer science courses can be notoriously difficult for students, especially those outside of the major. There are many reasons for this, but the programming software itself may play a significant role. To address this issue, we have developed Pythy, a web-based programming environment that allows students to write, execute, and test programming assignments from within the familiar interface of a web browser. In this work, we discuss various aspects of Pythy in detail, including the rationale behind its design, the system architecture on which it is built, and the various functions offered by the software. Next, we discuss an evaluation of Pythy’s effectiveness during a programming course for non CS-majors offered at Virginia Tech, comparing it to a different software solution used in another programming course. Results suggest that Pythy was successful in several target areas, including making it easier to get started with programming and providing feedback about program behavior. Access log data from Pythy itself reveals details about how students used the system. Finally, we conclude with a summary of key contributions and suggest some potential future directions for the system.

4D-Printed tool for Compressing a Shape Memory Polyurethane Foam during programming

Although several force application concepts are known that can be used to deform shape memory polymers (SMPs) within the scope of programming, controlled deformation is challenging in the case of samples with a cylinder-like shape, which need to be homogeneously compressed starting from the lateral surface. To solve this problem, this contribution follows a material approach that takes advantage of four-dimensional (4D) printing. Fused filament fabrication (FFF) was used as an additive manufacturing (AM) technique to produce a thermoresponsive tool in a cylindrical shape from a polyether urethane (PEU) having a glass transition temperature (Tg) close to 55 degrees C, as determined by differential scanning calorimetry (DSC). Once it was 4D-printed, a sample of laser cut polyester urethane urea (PEUU) foam with a cylindrical wall was placed inside of it. Subsequent heating to 75 degrees C and keeping that temperature constant for 15 min resulted in the compression of the foam, because the internal stresses of the PEU were transferred to the PEUU, whose soft segments were completely molten at 65 degrees C as verified by DSC. Upon cooling to -15 degrees C and thus below the offset temperature of the soft segment crystallization transition of the PEUU, the foam was fixed in its new shape. After 900 days of storage at temperatures close to 23 degrees C, the foam recovered its original shape upon reheating to 75 degrees C. In another experiment, a 4D-printed cylinder was put into hibernation for 900 days before its thermoresponsiveness was investigated. In the future, 4D-printed tools may be produced in many geometries, which fit well to the shapes of the SMPs to be programmed. Beyond programming SMP foams, transferring the forces released by 4D-printed tools to other programmable materials can further expand technical possibilities.

The integration of programming in K-12 education (kindergarten to grade 12) can be viewed worldwide. Expected outcomes of the integration is that students will develop skills in problem solving, creativity, logical thinking, reasoning, and computational thinking. Previous research has identified several challenges for the integration of programming, such as lack of guidance, motivation, time and competence. The aim of this study is to examine the use of programming tools in teaching and learning material by K-12 teachers. The teaching and learning material analysed in this study were collected from a website (***) where K-12 teachers can share their teaching and learning material with each other. A document review process, inspired by a systematic literature review process, was used to select the teaching and learning material to be included in the study. The selected teaching and learning material were later analysed through content analysis with deductive and inductive coding. In the study, four types of programming tools can be found in the analysed teaching and learning material: textual programming tools, block programming tools, tangible programming tools, and unplugged programming. The findings of the study indicate potential relationships between the use of different programming tools and school subjects and student grades. These findings can be drawn upon by teachers and other stakeholders in the decision on what programming tools to integrate in classroom practice and how they are to be used.

The field of high-resolution mass spectrometry has undergone a rapid progress in the last years due to instrumental improvements leading to a higher sensitivity and selectivity of instruments. A variety of qualitative screening approaches, summarized as nontarget screening, have been introduced and have successfully extended the environmental monitoring of organic micropollutants. Several automated data processing workflows have been developed to handle the immense amount of data that are recorded in short time frames by these methods. Most data processing workflows include similar steps, but underlying algorithms and implementation of different processing steps vary. In this study the consistency of data processing with different software tools was investigated. For this purpose, the same raw data files were processed with the software packages MZmine2, enviMass, Compound Discoverer, and XCMS online and resulting feature lists were compared. Results show a low coherence between different processing tools, as overlap of features between all four programs was around 10%, and for each software between 40% and 55% of features did not match with any other program. The implementation of replicate and blank filter was identified as one of the sources of observed divergences. However, there is a need for a better understanding and user instructions on the influence of different algorithms and settings on feature extraction and following filtering steps. In future studies it would be of interest to investigate how final data interpretation is influenced by different processing software. With this work we want to encourage more awareness on data processing as a crucial step in the workflow of nontarget screening.

"Cyber-Film": A visual approach that facilitates program comprehension

This paper presents a visual approach that will make program comprehension easy. This visual approach employs "Cyber-Films" where a user can use them not only as a programming tool but also as a learning tool. This paper briefly describes how to use "Cyber-Films" as a programming tool, how to use them as a learning tool, and how to guarantee the absence (or at least minimize the presence) of syntax errors in programming. In order to verify that "Cyber-Films" are also useful as a learning tool, a prototype implementation was developed and an experiment was conducted. This paper presents and discusses the results of that experiment. Its goal was to evaluate whether or not the visual approach used was easy to understand even for users with no background at all. The results of that experiment showed that the majority of the respondents correctly identified each scheme of communication presented in "Cyber-Film" format by just observing the set of frames in animation either once or twice and at most thrice before understanding a given scheme. Because the respondents easily identified how a given scheme worked by observing it, this approach can also facilitate the understanding of programs written by other people.

Program Design for Ship Piping Network Visualization Model Based on WPF and C#

The traditional approach to ship pipeline programming often involves describing and calculating based on text files. This method tends to be error-prone and time-consuming, especially for complex systems with a large amount of data related to pipelines. In case of system failures, troubleshooting becomes inconvenient. Additionally, matrix calculations can lead to issues such as extreme values, and visualizing the results is challenging. To address these challenges, this paper proposes an intuitive, user-friendly, and efficient ship pipeline programming tool. The tool utilizes Microsoft's WPF (Windows Presentation Foundation) graphical interface technology and the C# programming language. A graphical interface for ship pipeline networks is constructed, allowing users to visually build the physical model of pipelines through intuitive drag-and-drop and connection operations. Furthermore, the paper adopts Excel spreadsheets as the input method for data and combines it with domain knowledge of marine engineering pipelines. This approach establishes logical models for various pipelines, valves, and other equipment on ships. The models incorporate attributes from the spreadsheet to control characteristics like maximum flow rates and flow directions. By combining graphical modules, pipeline connections, and Excel spreadsheets, the method proposed in this paper offers a more convenient way to construct pipeline network models. The resulting models closely resemble actual ship pipelines, leading to improved accuracy and efficiency in data processing and calculations.

This paper describes the design and evaluation process of two mobile programming assistance tools that allow children in the early childhood to develop programs and execute them using robots. The tools are called TITIBOTS and TITIBOTS Colab which incorporates collaboration. The tools have icon-based interfaces and integrate visual programming, robotics, and mobile devices as one tool. The main issues and lessons learned during the design process are described. The methodology used in this project was User-Centered Design (UCD) process. The tools were developed and evaluated applying participatory-design, experience prototyping, and usability testing. The final product are two simple, intuitive, and easy to use tools, for children between 4 and 6 years old. The results were promising: children liked the applications and were willing to continue using it to program robots for solving specific tasks.
