How to control and monitor devices when I'm not at home? It is a question that until the last century did not have an overwhelming answer from the engineering field. The technological development of recent years has allowed us to perform this task by using software and hardware tools: monitoring different devices from our smart phone comes down to simply downloading an app or entering a website. This article presents an application that can be example of how to answer the aforementioned question.

Good documentation offers the promise of enabling developers to easily understand design decisions. Unfortunately, in practice, design documents are often rarely updated, becoming inaccurate, incomplete, and untrustworthy. A better solution is to enable developers to write down design rules which are checked against code for consistency. But existing rule checkers require learning specialized query languages or program analysis frameworks, creating a barrier to writing project-specific rules. We introduce two new techniques for authoring design rules: snippet-based authoring and semi-natural-language authoring. In snippet-based authoring, developers specify characteristics of elements to match by writing partial code snippets. In semi-natural language authoring, a textual representation offers a representation for understanding design rules and resolving ambiguities. We implemented these approaches in RulePad. To evaluate RulePad, we conducted a between-subjects study with 14 participants comparing RulePad to the PMD Designer, a utility for writing rules in a popular rule checker. We found that those with RulePad were able to successfully author 13 times more query elements in significantly less time and reported being significantly more willing to use RulePad in their everyday work.

There is an immense interest in teaching computer science concepts - and programming specifically - to everyone. The United States Military Academy at West Point has required every student, regardless of major, to pass a computer science zero (CS0) course for the last 50 years: From punch cards to Python. We present a history of our CS0 course and the lessons learned from the most recent redesign of the course. We review the last decade of student assessments and how they influenced the latest iteration. We contrast the expectations of students in a CS0 course with those in a CS1 course. We discuss the national efforts to make CS accessible to all and explore the challenges unique to a CS0 course. We demonstrate similarities between our course and the Advance Placement CS Principles and show where differences are justified. We review the relevant pedagogical research for CS0 and present lessons learned over multiple iterations of the course. Based on our current course review and implementation, we believe that Computer Science for everyone is attainable and relevant to the needs of every student.

The tremendous growth in IT companies is due to bringing high-quality software products in the market. Quality plays a very important role for the success of any software company. The inappropriate extraction of requirements causes failure of the software product. Thus to gain superior quality software product the primary goal is to excavate correct requirements. Researchers suggested Quality Function Deployment (QFD) as one of the methods that offers accurate requirements of the product. It involves customers and designers to improve the quality of software product. Though QFD helps in picking up the product quality, traditional crisp approach ignoring linguistic nature escorts the need of fuzzy integration. The fuzzy nature of linguistic correlation terms offers a great help to accomplish appropriate result. Thus development of the software tool using Fuzzy Quality Function Deployment (FQFD) can improve the quality of software product. The development of the proposed software system can be carried out by choosing appropriate tools so as to obtain good quality software. The broad variety of accessibility in programming tools led the need to choose appropriate language. This paper helps in analyzing the suitable tool for the proposed software system by comparing features of the programming languages with each other. This paper focuses on the comparison of programming languages by their decisive factors and features to analyze the power of these languages in developing the proposed system. Different languages such as C, C++ and java are compared to show why *** is best suited to this software by comparing their design aspect as well as functions, events and methods in context with VB. net.

This paper presents RoboComp, an open-source component-oriented robotics framework. Ease of use and low development effort has proven to be two of the key issues to take into account when building frameworks. Due to the crucial role of development tools in these questions, this paper deeply describes the tools that make RoboComp more than just a middleware. To provide an overview of the developer experience, some examples are given throughout the text. It is also compared to the most open-source relevant projects with similar goals, specifying its weaknesses and strengths.

Collectively-authored programming resources such as Q&A sites and open-source libraries provide a limited window into how programs are constructed, debugged, and run. To address these limitations, we introduce Meta: a language extension for Python that allows programmers to share functions and track how they are used by a crowd of other programmers. Meta functions are shareable via URL and instrumented to record runtime data. Combining thousands of Meta functions with their collective runtime data, we demonstrate tools including an optimizer that replaces your function with a more efficient version written by someone else, an auto-patcher that saves your program from crashing by finding equivalent functions in the community, and a proactive linter that warns you when a function fails elsewhere in the community. We find that professional programmers are able to use Meta for complex tasks (creating new Meta functions that, for example, cross-validate a logistic regression), and that Meta is able to find 44 optimizations (for a 1.45 times average speedup) and 5 bug fixes across the crowd.

A design pattern encapsulates the knowledge of object-oriented designers into re-usable artifacts. A design pattern is a descriptive device that fosters software design re-use. There are several reasons why design patterns are not used as generative constructs that support code re-use. The first reason is that design patterns describe a set of solutions to a family of related design problems and it is difficult to generate a single body of code that adequately solves each problem in the family. A second reason is that it is difficult to construct and edit generative design patterns. A third major impediment is the lack of a tool-independent representation. A common representation could lead to a shared repository to make more patterns available. In this paper we describe a new approach to generative design patterns that solves these three difficult problems. We illustrate this approach using tools called CO2P2S and Meta-CO2P2S, but our approach is tool-independent.

The increasing sophistication and availability of Augmented and Virtual Reality (AR/VR) technologies wield the potential to transform how we teach and learn computational concepts and coding. This project develops a platform for creative coding in virtual and augmented reality. The Embodied Coding Environment (ECE) is a flow-based visual coding system designed to increase physical engagement with programming and lower the barrier to entry for novice programmers. It is conceptualized as a merged digital/physical workspace where spatial representation of code, the visual outputs of the code, and user interactions and edit histories are co-located in a virtual 3D space.

A design pattern is a mechanism for encapsulating the knowledge of experienced designers into a re-usable artifact. Parallel design patterns reflect commonly occurring parallel communication and synchronization structures. Our tools, CO2P3S (Correct Object-Oriented Pattern-based Parallel programming System) and MetaCO(2)P(3)S, use generative design patterns. A programmer selects the parallel design patterns that are appropriate for an application, and then adapts the patterns for that specific application by selecting from a small set of code-configuration options. CO2P3S then generates a custom framework for the application that includes all of the structural code necessary for the application to ran in parallel. The programmer is only required to write simple code that launches the application and to fill in some application-specific sequential hook routines. We use generative design patterns to take an application specification (parallel design patterns + sequential user code) and use it to generate parallel application code that achieves good performance in shared memory and distributed memory environments. Although our implementations are for Java, the approach we describe is tool and language independent. This paper describes generalizing CO2P3S to generate distributed-memory parallel solutions.
