Intra-layer network coding for lossy communication of progressive codes

In this paper we discuss layered multicast (LM) of progressive source codes using network coding. LM is absolutely optimal if different sinks in the network are satisfied up to their max-flow. Since absolutely optimal intra-layer network strategies might not exist for general networks, we present conditions under which an absolutely optimal, intra-layer multicast strategy exists for a given network and how that strategy may be efficiently constructed. We also discuss the problem of designing optimal intra-layer multicast strategies for general directed networks. (C) 2014 Elsevier GmbH. All rights reserved.

A progressive 3D triangular mesh compression algorithm built on the MOG-based Bayesian entropy coding and the gradual prediction scheme is proposed in this work. For connectivity coding, we employ MOG models to estimate the posterior probabilities of topology symbols given vertex geometries. Then, we encode the topology symbols using an arithmetic coder with different contexts, which depend on the posterior probabilities. For geometry coding, we propose the gradual prediction labeling and the dual-ring prediction to divide vertices into groups and predict later groups more efficiently using the information in already encoded groups. Simulation results demonstrate that the proposed algorithm provides significantly better performance than the conventional wavemesh coder, with the average bit rate reduction of about 16.9 %.

progressive coding technology based on ROI can effectively improve network transmission efficiency of remote image and meet application demand for users to concern important region with a priority. This article firstly analyzes traditional ROI coding method based on bit plane shift, points out existent deficiency of such methods;then put forward a novel ROI progressive coding algorithm. Basic principle of this algorithm is that, on the basis of regular wavelet subband, separate high frequency subbands into high frequency ROI subband and high frequency BG subband and rearrange transformed wavelet subbands, then realize progressive coding from low frequency subband, high frequency ROI subband to high frequency BG subband;at last, effectiveness and superiority of this algorithm are verified by experimental analysis.

A VLSI progressive coding for wavelet-based image compression

This paper presents a new algorithm for progressive image coding, called Tag Setting In Hierarchical Tree (TSIHT). The TSIHT coding can save the memory requirement while keeping the low-bit-rate quality high. The TSIHT algorithm has been implemented onto a chip with 0.35 mu IP4M CMOS technology. The chip can handle 256x256 gray-scale images and the gate count is about 2560 gates within 247500 mu m2 area. The latency of the critical path is 6.32 ns, and the maximum working frequency can be as high as 158 MHz.(1)

The variety of electronic devices for digital video recording and playback is growing rapidly, thus increasing the availability of such information in many different platforms. So, the development of efficient ways of storing, transmitting and accessing such data becomes increasingly important. In this context, video coding plays a key role in compressing data, optimizing resource usage for storing and transmitting digital video. Nevertheless, tasks involving video analysis, manipulation and content-based search also become increasingly relevant, forming a basis for several applications that exploit the abundance of information in digital video. Often the solution to these problems makes use of video segmentation, which consists of dividing a video into homogeneous regions according to certain characteristics such as color, texture, motion or some semantic aspect. In this thesis, a new method for segmentation of videos in their constituent objects based on motion coherence of regions is proposed. The proposed segmentation method initially identifies the correspondences of sparsely sampled points along different video frames. Then, it performs clustering of point sets that have similar trajectories. Finally, a pixelwise classification is obtained from these sampled point sets. The proposed method does not assume any camera model or global motion model to the scene and/or objects. Still, it allows the identification of multiple objects, without knowing the number of objects a priori. In order to validate the proposed segmentation method, an object-based video coding approach was developed. According to this approach, the motion of an object is represented by affine transformations, while object texture and shape are simultaneously coded, in a progressive way. The developed video coding method yields functionalities such as progressive transmission and object scalability. High efficiency ordered dither block truncation coding with dither array LUT and its scalable coding application

Block truncation coding is an efficient compression technique while offering good image quality. Nonetheless. the blocking effect inherent in BTC causes severe perceptual artifact in high compression ratio applications. In this study, the ordered dither block truncation coding (ODBTC) is proposed to solve this problem, where the dither array look up table (LUT) approach is proposed to significantly reduce the complexity of the BTC. Moreover, a novel progressive coding scheme is presented for efficiently displaying ODBTC images. The ODBTC utilizes the characteristic of the bit-interleaved bit map to determine the transmitting order and then progressively reconstructs the ODBTC image. In addition. the progressive ODBTC can provide higher compression ratio by toggling and entropy coding treatments. This paper presents a progressive coding scheme for 3-D objects, based on overcomplete signal expansions on the 2-D sphere. Due to increased freedom in the basis construction, redundant expansions have shown interesting approximation properties in the decomposition of signals with multidimensional singularities organized along embedded submanifolds. We propose to map simple 3-D models on 2-D spheres and then to decompose the signal over a redundant dictionary of oriented and anisotropic atoms living on the sphere. The signal expansion is computed iteratively with a matching pursuit algorithm, which greedily selects the most prominent components of the 3-D model. The decomposition therefore inherently represents a progressive stream of atoms, which is advantageously used in the design of scalable representations. An encoder is proposed that compresses the stream of atoms by adaptive coefficient quantization and entropy coding of atom indexes. Experimental results show that the novel coding strategy outperforms state-of-the-art progressive coders in terms of distortion, mostly at low bit rates. Furthermore, since the dictionary is built on structured atoms, the proposed representation simultaneously offers an increased flexibility for easy stream manipulations. We finally illustrate that advantage in the design of a view-dependent transmission scheme.

In earlier work, Demaret and Iske proposed the scattered data coding (SDC) method for (single-rate) coding of arbitrarily-sampled image data. In this paper, several modifications to the SDC method are proposed in order to remove some limitations of the original scheme, improve coding efficiency, and add a progressive lossy-to-lossless coding capability. Through experimental results, the proposed method is shown to yield a significant improvement in coding efficiency (relative to the original SDC method) as well as provide an efficient progressive lossy-to-lossless coding capability.

A novel progressive coding scheme is presented for the efficient display of dithered images. Dithered images are the results of thresholding original gray-level images with dithering screens. After the preprocessing of bit-interleaving, this algorithm utilizes the characteristic of reordered image to determine the transmitting order and then progressively reconstructs the dithered image. In addition, the dithered images are further compressed by lossy and lossless procedures. The experimental results demonstrate high-quality reconstructions while maintaining low transmitted bit rates. Moreover, an objective error criterion obtained by LMS optimization is also presented in this study. As documented in the experiments, the error criterion is quite consistent to the basic characteristic of human visual system. (c) 2006 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.

Compact and progressive Plant Models for Streaming in Networked Virtual Environments

Just as in the real world, plants are important objects in virtual worlds for creating pleasant and realistic environments, especially those involving natural scenes. As such, much effort has been made in realistic modeling of plants. As the trend moves towards networked and distributed virtual environments, however, the current models are inadequate as they are not designed for progressive transmissions. In this article, we fill in this gap by proposing a progressive representation for plants based on generalized cylinders. We model the shape and thickness of branches in a plant as Bezier curves, group the curves according to the similarity, and differentially code the curves to represent the plant in a compact and progressive manner. To facilitate the transmission of the plants, we quantify the visual contribution of each branch and use this weight in packet scheduling. We show the efficiency of our representations and the effectiveness of our packet scheduler through experiments over a wide area network.
