The work presented in the paper provides an extension to embedded multistage scalar quantization. It allows progressive coding with any set of scalar quantizers, where the partitions are not necessarily embedded, using an efficient, novel multi-layer mapping scheme. It is applicable for progressive coding of raw image and video data and for progressive extension to compression schemes like JPEG and MPEG.

Being able to transmit the audio bitstream progressively is a highly desirable property for network transmission. MPEG-4 version 2 audio supports fine grain bit rate scalability in the generic audio coder (GAC). It has a bit-sliced arithmetic coding (BSAC) tool, which provides scalability in the step of I Kbps per audio channel. There are also several other scalable audio coding methods, which have been proposed in recent years. However, these scalable audio tools are only available for mono and stereo audio material. Little work has been done on progressive coding of multichannel audio sources. MPEG advanced audio coding (AAC) is one of the most distinguished multichannel digital audio compression systems. Based on AAC, we develop in this work a progressive syntax-rich multichannel audio codec (PSMAC). It not only supports fine grain bit rate scalability for the multichannel audio bitstream but also provides several other desirable functionalities. A formal subjective listening test shows that the proposed algorithm achieves an excellent performance at several different bit rates when compared with MPEG AAC.

Near-lossless/lossless compression of error-diffused images using a two-pass approach

The current international standard, the Joint Bilevel Image Experts Group (JBIG), is a representative of a bilevel image compression algorithm. It compresses bilevel images with high performance, but it shows relatively low performance in compressing error-diffused halftone images. This paper proposes a new bilevel image compression for error-diffused images, which is based on Bayes' theorem. The proposed coding procedure consists of two passes. It groups 2 x 2 dots into a cell, where each cell is represented by the number of black dots and the locations of the black dots in the cell. The number of black dots in the cell is encoded in the first pass, and their locations are encoded in the second pass. The first pass performs a near-lossless compression, which can be refined to be lossless by the second pass. Experimental results show a high compression performance for the proposed method when it is applied to error-diffused images.

This paper presents a new, highly flexible, scalable image coder based on a Matching Pursuit expansion. The dictionary of atoms is built by translation, rotation and anisotropic refinement of gaussian functions, in order to efficiently capture edges in natural images. In the same time, the dictionary is invariant under isotropic scaling, which interestingly leads to very simple spatial resizing operations. It is shown that the proposed scheme compares to state-of-the-art coders when the compressed image is transcoded to a lower (octave-based) spatial resolution. In contrary to common compression formats, our bit-stream can moreover easily and efficiently be decoded at any spatial resolution, even with irrational re-scaling factors. In the same time, the Matching Pursuit algorithm provides an intrinsically progressive stream. This worthy feature allows for easy rate filtering operations, where the least important atoms are simply discarded to fit restrictive bandwidth constraints. Our scheme is finally shown to favorably compare to state-of-the-art progressive coders for moderate to quite important rate reductions.

The explosive growth of images and videos on the World Wide Web (WWW) is making the Web into a huge resource of visual information. Among various types of multimedia information, still images or dynamic images (video clips) in compressed format are the most widely accepted on the WWW. Therefore, it becomes an essential issue to achieve the maximum efficiency in transmitting and decoding those compressed images on the Internet. progressive coding provides a mode that allows a coarse version of an image being transmitted at a lower bit rate and then gradually refined by subsequent transmissions. Compared with conventional coding, it is more suitable for interactive applications such as those involving JPEG images on the Internet. In this paper, we first give an approximation of cosine function used in IDCT for the various orders. Based on the approximation and a series analysis, we then develop a progressive decoding scheme which comprehends the successive approximation and the spectral selection. The analysis and experiments establish the fact that our proposed method saves computational cost significantly in comparison with the existing spectral selection based progressive decoding proposed by JPEG. Extensive experiments are carried out to evaluate the proposed algorithm, which reveals that, the reconstructed images, even at the lowest bit rate and with lower order approximation, can still achieve encouraging PSNR values.

In this paper, a nonlinear subband decomposition scheme with perfect reconstruction is proposed for lossless and progressive coding of multispectral images. The merit of this new scheme is to exploit efficiently the spatial and the spectral redundancies contained in the multispectral images related to a scene of interest. Besides, the proposed method is suitable for telebrowsing applications. Experiments carried out-on real scenes allow to assess its performances.' The simulation results demonstrate that our approach leads to improved compression performances compared with currently used lossless coders.

Compression of palettized images with progressive coding of the color information

This paper introduces a new compression method for palettized images, which supports progressive refinement of the color information in contrast to the resolution refinement used in standard methods like interlaced GIF. Such, fine image details can be recognized after decoding only a small part of the compressed image data. Achieved compression ratios are comparable to those of interlaced GIF or PKG. The method combines color map sorting with bitplane by bitplane prediction and Golomb coding of the pixel held.

We propose two modified versions of the original wavelet difference reduction (WDR) algorithm proposed by Tian and Wells. The first algorithm encodes an image without entropy coding and achieves comparable PSNR performance with the original WDR at low bit rate while exceeding the PSNR performance of original WDR algorithm at medium to high bitrates. The second algorithm achieves slightly higher PSNR performance than that of original WDR with similar computational complexity. The modification to the original WDR is based on the observation that encoding the symbol streams generated in the sorting pass (significance map) and refinement pass (magnitudes) separately can be beneficial. We can either encode the symbol streams under different contexts using entropy coder, or output the raw symbol streams without entropy coding stage. It is shown in the experiments that up to 1/3 of both the encoding time and the decoding time can be saved without sacrificing any PSNR performance when compared to the original WDR.
