Linking project complexity to project success: a hybrid SEM-FCM method

Purpose The purpose of this study is to develop a novel hybrid approach that incorporates the structural equation model (SEM) and fuzzy cognitive map (FCM) to investigate the impacts of the variation in project complexity on project success. Design/methodology/approach This study adopts SEM to identify and validate a correlation between project complexity variables and PS. Standardized causal coefficients estimated in SEM are used to construct an FCM model to illustrate the effect of complexity on PS with linkage direction and weights. Predictive and diagnostic analyses are performed to dynamically model the variation in project complexity on the evolution of PS. Findings Results indicate that (1) the hybrid SEM-FCM approach is capable of modeling the dynamic interactions between project complexity and PS;(2) information, goal and environmental complexities are negatively correlated with PS, and technological, task and organizational complexities are positively correlated with PS and (3) the recommendations of complexity management for construction projects are put forward under the guideline of success monitoring. Originality/value This research contributes to (1) the state of knowledge by proposing a hybrid methodology that can model the dynamic interactions between project complexity and PS and (2) the state of practice by providing a new perspective of PS evaluation to enhance the probability of success in complex construction projects.

Nowadays, infrastructure projects seem to become more complex and the project manager’s ability to control projects decreases. Therefore, it is crucial to adapt project management to cope with the emerging complexity. Flexibility options are explored to deal with the increasing complexity. To grasp complexity, a selection of the Technical, Organisational and External framework was used. Eleven flexibility enablers are studied to operationalise them and make them applicable for project managers. In this explanatory research, a case study has been done to explain the possibilities for flexibility enablers to cope with the found complexities. The results of the individual case study and the cross-case study provided input for a proposal on how flexibility enablers facilitate the management of project complexity. A selection of related complexity elements and flexibility enablers have been used to develop a flexible project management tool. The tool provides insights into the selected complexities, creates awareness on flexibility perspectives from the project team, allows to choose the operationalised flexibility enablers, and reflects on the changes made to keep improving. The tool is meant to be used throughout the project and supports incorporating flexibility to be a dynamic process. Concluding, the awareness of complexity and flexibility helps to cope with complex infrastructure projects. The developed tool for project management will help apply specific flexibility enablers to cope with relevant complexity elements. Future research into other construction organisations is needed to generalise the findings of the operationalisation of the selected flexibility enablers. Also, future research is recommended on the awareness and the adaptation possibilities for flexibility in project management within the infrastructure.

Impact of absorptive capacity on project success through mediating role of strategic agility: project complexity as a moderator

The purpose of this study is to explore the role of potential and realized absorptive capacity on project suc-cess through both the mediating roles of strategic agility and the moderating role of project complexity. A simple random sampling was used to collect data from 285 respondents working in the IT sector of small-medium sized Portuguese enterprises (SMEs). Due to the Covid-19 pandemic, data were collected from and distributed on, several online channels (Gmail, LinkedIn, Twitter, and Facebook). Smart PLS-SEM, version 3.2.8 was used for the analysis. The results indicate that the two absorptive capacity sub-dimensions, poten-tial and realized absorptive capacity, not only directly affect a project's success but also indirectly through the mediator of strategic agility. Although the moderating role of project complexity has a positive and signif-icant effect on the relation between potential absorptive capacity and strategic agility, it is insignificant con-cerning the relation between realized absorptive capacity and strategic agility. Managing project complexity: how to cope with multiple dimensions of complex systems

Purpose This study aimed to contribute to the field of project management (PM) by exploring the elements of project complexity and how individuals respond to such complexity. Multiple dimensions were examined, including technical, human and political dimensions, with a significant impact on project implementation. Design/methodology/approach An in-depth case study was conducted, focusing on the implementation of a Brazilian hospital. Data were collected through semi-structured interviews, participant observation and document analysis. Bridging the research gap involved unraveling the project complexity elements and how to manage them, more specifically in the hospital context. Findings The findings revealed that project complexity challenges managers to deal with uncertainties, emergencies and unexpected situations. It implies coping with multiple factors of technical, human and political dimensions. Divergent interests contributed to the formation of coalitions, triggering relevant individual and group learning. Strategic improvisation had a potentially significant response from managers regarding project complexity to make adjustments and changes, focusing on project effectiveness and performance. Practical implications - The challenge of managing project complexity is to deal with the balance between structure and improvisation in response to complexity. Flexibility, adaptability, self-organisation and strategic improvisation are key elements in managerial practices that address complexity, especially in hospital projects. Originality/value The differentiated approach lies in the proposed model of project complexity, with elements that make up the technical, human and political dimensions, with significant results for complex projects.

complexity is a term applied throughout the project management field, and project complexity typically presents additional management challenges to achieving project objectives. Without an appropriate approach to assess and manage project complexity, project teams frequently face difficulties in executing their projects. This study provides a framework to develop a tool which can effectively measure and assess complexity levels of a project. This tool was designed with a “complexity Measurement Matrix”, and is comprised of 37 complexity indicators (CIs) which have proven to be significant to describing project complexity. The complexity measurement scales were developed by normalizing data gathered from a survey of 44 completed projects. The weight factors of the 37 CIs were calculated based on three rounds of Delphi method. The developed tool generates a set of comprehensive reports and provides users with the overall project complexity level, a series of radar diagrams describing the most important indicators, and associated strategies to manage each indicator. This study contributes to the body of knowledge by providing a pioneering approach to assessing project complexity and aids practitioners in facilitating project complexity management processes identifying the most important complexity contributors and focusing on managing complexity-associated challenges. © 2018, © 2018 Associated Schools of Construction.

Avoiding or disregarding: Exploring the relationship between scope creep, project complexity, and the success of construction projects

This study aims to investigate the relationship between scope creep and the success of construction projects in the presence of project complexity. This study employed a positivism approach. Therefore, a survey method is used to collect data from 327 Pakistan's construction industry practitioners. We employed regression and PROCESS techniques were used to test research hypotheses. The findings revealed that scope creep factors (i.e. technological, organizational, and human) negatively impacts the success of construction projects, indicating that more scope creep has fewer chances of project success. Furthermore, project complexity significantly moderates the relationship between scope creep and project success, and a more complex project has fewer chances of success. The finding implies that the organizational factors have the highest influence on the success of construction projects, followed by human and technical factors of scope creep, which need to be addressed during the initiating and planning phases of the construction projects.

In general, project complexity and project dynamism are recognized as potent characteristics that influence, usually in a negative way, the outcome of software development projects. However, with respect to the two dominant paradigms for managing software development projects (i.e., plan-based project approach and agility-based project approach), there is less agreement as to which one is better. Emerging research suggests that the preeminence of one approach over another is a matter of fit between the project management approach and the project context, including its complexity and dynamism. We contribute to this line of research by studying the moderating influence of the two project management approaches on the relationship between project complexity and project dynamism on project outcomes. Our analysis of data gathered from a survey of software development professionals shows that managing dynamism is critical for realizing project success, and an agility-based project approach is best suited for mitigating dynamism's negative effects on project success.

This research identifies 18 main project complexity factors affecting defence projects and four new factors to the literature. Many interdependencies among the factors were identified, suggesting they form a contextualised project complexity network capable of creating emerging behaviours that would not be observable if they were analysed in isolation. These interdependencies make the project adapt and self-organise, resulting in emergent behaviour and unintended consequences beyond the team's ability to cope with them. These characteristics challenge the classic view of project management based on objectivity, reductionism, control, and predictability in favour of new approaches based on subjectivity, systemic thinking, and adaptability. Moreover, the lower the team's delivery capacity, the greater the perception of the project complexity's effects, given that the project team will not have the capacity to manage and respond to these many interactions and elements. This systemic view contrast with the usual functionalist approach used on project complexity frameworks.

A Bid/Mark-Up Decision Support Model in Contractor’s Tender Strategy Development Phase Based on project complexity Measurement in the Downstream Sector of Petroleum Industry

The tender process is an inseparable step of the contract award process in the public sector, and from the other point of view, it is one of the crucial elements of the core business of construction contractors. Reviewing previous research reveals a gap in the application of a project’s detailed features and historical data to support the bid/no-bid decision and to determine the cost and time contract mark-ups. In this study, a prescriptive project complexity-based model is proposed to support the bid decision in the tender strategy development phase of a contractor for the downstream sector of the petroleum industry in Iran. For this purpose, regression analysis of historical data is adopted to configure the model and to infer from previous actual trends by exploring relationships between the contractor’s bid decision and proposed mark-ups with the project’s inherent and surrounding complexity factors. Hence, using experts’ opinions and historical data from 139 previous contracts as training and test data, a model was developed to make a decision on a bid and mark-up problem. The results of the model validation show that the credibility of the model is 74.67% and 75.36% for time and cost, respectively, and the reliability of model outputs is approximately 90% overall in predicting the bid mark-ups in accordance with the project complexity index (PCI). The main contribution of this research to current knowledge has two aspects: utilizing the complexity concept for the tender problem in the form of a project complexity index (PCI) and considering both time and cost mark-ups (TMU–CMU) in the contractor’s bid simultaneously. In addition, the results show that the more complex the project is, the higher the bid rate is. © 2022 by the authors. Licensee MDPI, Basel, Switzerland.

complexity is a critical factor in managing a project, as it presents an additional difficulty in achieving the project’s objectives. As complexity makes a project more challenging to understand and keep under control, agile methodologies have been developed to enable increased flexibility and responsiveness to changing conditions. Therefore, it is essential to empirically examine the moderating effect of project complexity on the relationship between agile response-to-change (AR) and project performance. To address this objective, a questionnaire was used to measure project complexity, project performance and AR. Structural equation modelling was used to explore the relationship between these variables. The results suggested that internal AR has a positive effect on budget performance. project complexity appears to lower the relationship between internal AR and schedule performance. As one would expect, the higher the level of project complexity, the more likely the project is to experience delays. © 2020, Springer Nature Singapore Pte Ltd.
