This paper presents a novel, effective algorithm to discriminate and separate super-imposed SSR (Secondary Surveillance Radar) Mode S signals. Our goal is a blind separation of multiple SSR sources using a single channel receiver. Other algorithms perform sources separation exploiting space diversity or statistical properties, but with the practical inconvenience of the need for a multi-channel receiver. As today SSR stations are equipped with single-channel receivers (for Multilateration and Wide Area Multilateration applications, M-LAT, WAM) the proposed algorithm is aimed to be operationally useful.

The recently-introduced fast affine projection (FAP) adaptive filter has performance rivalling that of the RLS adaptive filter in many situations. However, the sliding-window RLS algorithm embedded within the FAP adaptive filter can be too complex to implement in some cases. We describe an alternate implementation of the FAP adaptive filter that uses orthogonal transforms to approximately calculate the affine projection. Simulations show that the performance of this simplified algorithm is nearly as good as the original algorithm when the transform is chosen properly. In addition, we provide a gradient step size (GSS) method for enhancing the performance of the FAP adaptive filter in nonstationary signal environments.

This paper describes a new adaptive algorithm and assesses its effectiveness within speech enhancement applications. The proposed variable step size block exact APA (VSS-BEAPA) filtering is based on the affine projection algorithm (APA) and introduces a block processing with a variable step size that allows to consider under-modeling scenarios. The algorithm shows improved convergence performance and computational efficiency and its robustness is proved in a typical context of a hands-free teleconferencing application in a noisy environment. The experiments show that a microphone array system joined with VSS-BEAPA filtering is capable of both decreasing the noise level and enhancing the speech signal quality.

In this paper, a data-reusing algorithm with non-zero decision boundaries for data-selective updating of the coefficients of a decision feedback equalizer (DFE) is investigated for time-varying frequency selective wireless channels. Here, the coefficients of both the feed-forward filter (FFF) and the feedback filter (FBF) are adaptively updated using set-membership affine projection algorithm. It's performance is analyzed through simulations using ITU-R recommended wireless channel models. It is shown that, this scheme offers substantial computational savings while keeping the bit error rate (BER) and convergence performance almost similar to channel equalization with the data reusing affine projection algorithms. It is also demonstrated that, this channel equalization method yields faster convergence and better BER than the existing set-membership normalized least mean square (NLMS) algorithm based scheme.

This paper considers the localization and velocimetry problem of UGV by integrated sensing and communications in a Sub-6GHz cell-free system. Multiple distributed antennas are used to detect a single target and the echo signals are processed. For the receiver processing algorithm, we develop an improved algorithm suitable for real systems to address the problem that the matched-filter based backprojection algorithm consumes too much time. By de-composing range and velocity, the original algorithm is split into range backprojection and velocity backprojection algorithms respectively, and the effective target is identified by constant alarm false rate (CFAR) algorithm. Simulation results show that the improved algorithm increased the computation speed by at least 100 times. For the real system, better results are achieved by proposed algorithm for localization and velocimetry as well.

A novel version of the constrained affine projection (CAP) algorithm, referred to as the equally constrained affine projection (ECAP) algorithm is derived simultaneously to satisfy both the linear constraints and the residual conditions by means of the Lagrange method. In a geometrical view, the ECAP algorithm is interpreted to show a one-step optimization even with the parameter perturbation that is orthogonal to the constraint hyperplane, while the CAP algorithm yields two steps to reach at the optimal point. An adaptive filtering simulation with linear constraints depicts its behavior.

This paper presents a regularized modification to the weighted variable step-size affine projection algorithm (APA). The regularization overcomes the ill-conditioning introduced by both the forgetting process and the increasing size of the input matrix. The algorithm was tested by trials with colorized input signals and different parameter combinations. Simulations illustrate that the proposed algorithm is superior in terms of convergence speed and misadjustment compared with existing algorithms

In acoustic echo cancellation (AEC) applications, oftentimes an acoustic path from a loudspeaker to a microphone is estimated by means of a linear adaptive filter. However, loudspeakers introduce nonlinear distortions which may strongly degrade the adaptive filter performance, thus nonlinear filters have to be considered. This paper proposes two adaptive algorithms namely the parallel and cascade sliding-window kernel based affine projection algorithm (PSW-KAPA and CSW-KAPA) to solve the problem of nonlinear AEC (NLAEC) while keeping the computational complexity low. They are based on a leaky KAPA which employs the theory and algorithms of kernel methods. The basic concept is to perform adaptive filtering in a linear space that is nonlinearly related to the original input space. A kernel specifically designed for acoustic applications is proposed, which consists in a weighted sum of the linear and the Gaussian kernels. The motivation is basically to separate the problem into linear and nonlinear subproblems. The weights in the kernel also impose different forgetting mechanisms in the sliding window which in turn translates to a more flexible regularization. Simulation results show that PSW-KAPA and CSW-KAPA consistently outperform the linear NLMS, and generalize well both in high and low linear to nonlinear ratio (LNLR).
