A novel affine projection blind equalization CMA algorithm is presented in this paper. Based on quantization estimation errors and variable step-size, the algorithm can enhance convergence speed and decrease steady-state errors. Meanwhile, the algorithm has lower hardware implementation complexity because of the use of quantization estimation errors. Simulation results show that the performance of the novel algorithm has obvious advantages in convergence speed and steady-state errors.

An improved projection algorithm was put forward in the process of segmentation of license plate characters. According to the feature that trough created by the projection of space between the second and third character was very stable, the trough was detected as the starting point for locating the left and right boundary of characters. According to the feature that the width of license plate characters was fixed, when one side of the boundary of characters was located, a value was jumped firstly and then the other side of the boundary was located by traditional projection algorithm. The experimental result shows that compared to traditional algorithm, improved projection algorithm is not sensitive to the noise of things at left and right sides of license plate. And it can correctly segment the Chinese character with left-right or left-center-right structure.

For a network canceler, whose input is mainly speech, the proportionate affine projection algorithm (PAPA) is expected to present faster convergence speed than the existing proportionate NLMS algorithms. However, the performance criteria of fast convergence speed conflicts with low steady-state misalignment when a constant step-size parameter is applied. In this article we introduce a variable step-size technique into the PAPA in order to achieve both fast convergence speed and low steady-state misalignment. Simulation results show that the proposed approach can greatly improve the steady-state misalignment without sacrificing the fast convergence speed of the PAPA.

The paper proposed a technique for the synthesis of sparse arrays based on a simple extension of the alternating projections algorithm that inherits all the desirable features of the technique, i.e. arbitrary 3D arrays can be synthesized from field specifications and excitation constraints specified via the convenient and general "mask" representation. In contrast, the works of Bucci et al. (2008) and Liu et al. (2008) require the more detailed information on the aperture distribution/goal pattern, which may be too demanding when specifications cannot be put in terms of "canonical" (e.g. pencil beam, flat top, etc.) patterns (in such cases obtaining a goal pattern amounts to a synthesis process itself). In addition the work of Liu et al. (2008) appears applicable to ID arrays only and does not allow control over the element excitations (dynamic range, phase jumps). The propose technique has similarities to that in the work of Keizer (2008) but provides better control on the element excitations and more general pattern specifications. On the negative side, this approach is iterative and thus more computationally intensive than the direct methods in the works of Bucci et al. (2008) and Liu et al. (2008).

Normal vowels are confirmed to have irregular property which is possibly due to chaos. In this paper, we employ two approaches to detect the existence of underlying dynamics in Chinese normal vowels recorded from both male and female adults. The PPS algorithm that can test pseudoperiodic time series against the hypothesis of periodic orbits with uncorrelated noise presents that these data sets follow chaos. Meanwhile, another novel technique, weight distribution projection (WDP) of neural networks, is proposed to identify dynamical property of these given time series. Intuitively, their WDP graphs exhibit the chaotic property. So both methods give the same conclusion that the measured Chinese vowels are consistent with chaos.

The performance level of pattern recognition (PR) systems can be improved using in a proper way new powerful artificial neural networks inside of its classification chains and respectively, decision fusion techniques on available multispectral information. Consequently, to increase the pattern recognition performances, an improved neural classification chain and respectively, an evolutive version of Sugeno's fuzzy integral based on high-resolution radar (HRR), video and thermal imagery use are described. To confirm the broached theoretical aspects, a real image database was used.

The objective of this paper is to assess the accuracy of an autofocus method developed for the Fast Factorized Back-projection (FFBP) algorithm in simulated scenarios. We specifically address the question whether correlation measurements between subimages will suffice in the focusing process in one arbitrary merging step. A forest clutter model is used together with a model of the impulse responses to simulate two SAR sub-images of a forest. Correlation is used for sub-image matching and residual displacement errors are compiled using simulation. We conclude that the matching error increases with increased number of trees per resolution cell but can be restored with a larger image size in the correlation measurements. We also conclude that the autofocus method will be successful.

Near infrared spectroscopy combined with chemometrics was investigated to determine the total amino acids (TAA) in oilseed rape leaves. The samples in calibration, validation and prediction set were 80, 40 and 30, respectively. Different spectral preprocessing were compared, and three calibration methods were employed including partial least squares (PLS), multiple linear regression (MLR) and least squares-support vector machine (LS-SVM). The performance evaluation standards were determination coefficients (R 2 ) and root mean square error (RMSE). Successive projections algorithm (SPA) was applied as variable selection method. The optimal model was achieved by SPA-LS-SVM using 13 relevant wavelengths with R 2 = 0.9830 and RMSEP = 0.3964. The LS-SVM outperformed PLS and SPA-MLR models. The results indicated that near infrared spectroscopy was successfully applied for the determination of TAA in oilseed rape leaves. This detection method could be used for the on field monitoring of growing status and other physiological parameters of oilseed rape.

The most common algorithms used for echo cancellation are the normalized least-mean-square (NLMS) and the affine projection (AP). The classical versions of these algorithms use a constant step-size parameter and need to establish a tradeoff between several performance criteria e.g., high convergence rate versus low misadjustment. In this paper, we present a class of variable step-size NLMS and AP algorithms, which are designed to recover the near-end signal from the error of the adaptive filter. The simulation results indicate a robust behavior of these algorithms against the presence of the near-end signal.

This work considers localization of nodes in a sensor network using distance measurements. Recent methods favor projection onto convex sets (POCS), since it overcomes the multimodality problem that plagues least-squares formulations. Previous efforts in this direction require either that the sensor be located in the convex hull of the anchor nodes, or that complicated hyperbolic geometric calculations be employed. Here we propose a new algorithm which projects onto the boundary of convex sets, and features a computationally simple update procedure. Both cyclic and random projection schedules are considered, and initial convergence proofs are offered.
