In this paper, an approach is proposed for the robust tracking of upper body movement in unconstrained environments by using a Haar-Disparity algorithm together with a novel 2D silhouette projection algorithm. Haar-Disparity improves on the traditional skin manifold tracking by relaxing constraints on clothing, background and illumination. The 2D silhouette projection algorithm provides three orthogonal views of the 3D objects. This allows tracking of upper limbs to be performed in the 2D space as opposed to manipulating 3D noisy data directly. This paper also proposes a complete optimal set of interactions for very large interactive displays. The experimental results suggest that the proposed algorithm and optimal set of interactions are useful for interacting with large displays.

Robustness and parameter sensitivity issues of eigenstructure assignment approach are investigated. Eigenvalue sensitivity due to parameter variations is formulated as an optimization problem which is solved using a projection algorithm. Good compromise between eigenvalue sensitivity and eigenvector achievability can be arrived. The problem of unmodeled dynamics is tackled using a robustfying procedure. The algorithms proposed are computationally attractive and both yields more transparent designs.

The discovery of water level time series motifs is of much importance to improve the water level predictions. These predictions thereby are useful to the shipping industry, people living in the coastal areas, and even for emergency evacuation in case of a hurricane. In this paper, symbolic aggregate approximation (SAX) is employed to index and reduce the dimension of the time series, and the random projection algorithm is used to discover the unknown time series motifs, which are tested for accuracy by comparing them with the brute force algorithm.

Affine projection algorithms (APA) are useful adaptive filters whose main purpose is to speed the convergence of LMS-type filers. On the other hand, by optimally selecting the step-size, during the adaptation, we can obtain both fast convergence rate and low steady-state mean square error. In this paper, we introduce a new Variable Step Size (VSS) version of affine projection algorithms based on the generic VSS adaptive filter and use it for channel equalization. The proposed algorithms perform very well in attenuating noise and inter-symbol interference (ISI) in comparison with the standard NLMS and the recently introduced ordinary AP algorithms.

J. Benesty et al. (1995, 1996) pointed out that if we apply the affine projection method directly to a multichannel adaptive echo cancelling algorithm, the convergence characteristics are not necessarily good because of the lack of correlation between the multichannel signals. They then proposed a new algorithm called "MC-APA". However it has drawbacks in that the correction vectors of echo cancellers are confined to the orthogonal subspace of input signals and that its mathematical meaning is not so clear. This paper proposes a new algorithm to improve their method by choosing correction vectors from the entire input signal space for echo-cancelling and show good convergence characteristics in comparison with other methods.

We proposed earlier an optimization approach to flow control where the objective of the control is to maximize the aggregate utility of all sources over their transmission rates. The control mechanism is derived as a gradient projection algorithm to solve the dual problem. The algorithm assumes that each source is served by a single path. In this paper we extend the algorithm to the case where there are multiple paths between a source-destination pair. This allows flow control and routing to be jointly optimized.

Automatic Dependent Surveillance-Broadcast (ADS-B) is an International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) formally identified and promoted mainstream surveillance methods of the future. However, the increasing airspace traffic density makes overlapping a serious problem. In order to separate the overlapped ADS-B signals in time domain, orthogonal projection algorithms are carried out for different antenna situations. Firstly, Singular Value Decomposition (SVD) is used to determine the position of overlapped signals. Then, for antenna arrays, projection Algorithm (PA) is used to separate the overlapped signals. For single antenna, projection Algorithm Single Antenna (PASA) is used. Last, the separated signals are compared and verified.

A novel structure with direct inversion of a multiple input multiple output (MIMO) system is proposed in this paper. Based on this structure, 2 adaptive algorithms, LMS like and Affine projection Algorithm (APA), are proposed to directly obtain an accurate estimate of the inverse of the plant system. The proposed algorithms have faster convergence speed than the FxLMS algorithm. Furthermore, this structure does not necessitate any a prior information of plant system and it can trace the fluctuation of the plant. It is shown through simulations that the proposed method overperforms the FxLMS algorithm in convergence speed so it is much applicable to real world environments than the FxLMS algorithm.

Placed at the core of Smart Grids metering infrastructure are the Smart Meters, devices that not only measure electric energy consumption of a customer but also report data back to the utility. This process effectivelly sets a stage for a two-way communications link between meters and the utility, which may be used to improve not only the planning but also the operation of the grid. Data submitted goes through the Advanced Metering Infrastructure and is finally delivered to the utility at the edge of the topology. Once at the utility, the streamed data must be processed for billing and monitoring of the grid. Though, given the large volume of the data (e.g. billions of meters), usual processing may be costly both in time and resources, fact that motivates a search for lower complexity processing. In this paper we apply dimensionality reduction via random projection to obtain a reduced version (sketch) of Meters' original data, thus increasing the processing throughput of the utility. Using real smart meters measurements, we show that processing using sketches sized 50% smaller than original data can achieve a 2% average relative error while presenting greater data rates.

Model Reference Neural Network Controller for Induction Motor Speed Control

This paper proposes a novel robust speed control method for induction motor drives based on a two-layered neural network plant estimator (NNPE) and a two-layered neural network PI controller (NNPIC). The NNPE is used to provide a real-time adaptive estimation of the unknown motor dynamics. The widely used projection algorithm is used as the learning algorithm for these neural networks to automatically adjust the parameters of the NNPIC and to minimize the differences between the motor speed and the speed predicted by the NNPE. The simulation and experimental results demonstrate that the proposed robust control scheme can improve the performance of an induction motor drive and reduce its sensitivity to parameter variations and load disturbances.
