The contribution of this paper is twofold. We first clarify geometrically an inherent difference in convergence speed between two adaptive algorithms, projected-NLMS (PNLMS) and constrained-NLMS (CNLMS), both of which are widely used for linearly constrained adaptive filtering problems. A simple geometric interpretation suggests that CNLMS converges faster than PNLMS especially in the challenging situations of the adaptive beamforming where there exist spatially-correlated interferences (i.e., interferences that have small angular separation with the desired signal). To enhance the advantage of CNLMS in convergence speed while keeping linear computational complexity, we then propose an efficient adaptive beamformer that utilizes multiple data at each iteration by extending the constrained parallel projection algorithm to complex cases. The simulation results demonstrate that the proposed beamformer exhibits even faster convergence than the constrained affine projection algorithm (CAPA) as well as CNLMS

Recent developments in PET scanners such as the HRRT (High Resolution Research Tomograph) developed by Siemens greatly enhanced their resolution as well as sensitivity, but they increased coincidence lines of response more than 4.5 times 10 generated by as many nuclear detectors as 120,000. This formidable amount of data poses a real problem in the image reconstruction and its applications. It also has been the major bottleneck in further developments of the higher resolution PET scanners. To remedy this problem in the image reconstruction, we developed a new algorithm based on the SIMD (Single Instruction Multiple Data) technique incorporated with the symmetry properties of the projection and backprojection processes, especially in the 3D OSEM algorithm. We refer to this technique as the SSP (Symmetry and SIMD based projection-backprojection) algorithm. As a demonstration, the algorithm was applied to the OSEM (Ordered Subset Expectation Maximization) 3D algorithm with HRRT data and it effectively reduced the total image reconstruction time to 80 folds.

Fast affine projection (FAP) algorithm is widely used recently for its NLMS like computational complexity and RLS like convergence rate. The regularization parameter in the FAP algorithm is used to guarantee a well behaved inverse of the covariance matrix, and it plays an important role in the performance of the FAP algorithm. However, the fixed value of the regularization parameter in the conventional FAP algorithm degrades the performance of the system when the signal and the acoustic environment have noticeable variations. In this paper, an efficient method is proposed to adjust the regularization parameter. Compared to the direct adjusting methods, it costs less computational burden and can be activated more frequently according to different signal and environment status

This paper presents a regularized modification to the weighted variable step-size affine projection algorithm (APA). The regularization overcomes the ill-conditioning introduced by both the forgetting process and the increasing size of the input matrix. The algorithm was tested by trials with colorized input signals and different parameter combinations. Simulations illustrate that the proposed algorithm is superior in terms of convergence speed and misadjustment compared with existing algorithms

This paper proposes a data-selective affine projection algorithm. The algorithm generalizes the ideas of the conventional set-membership affine-projection (SM-AP) algorithm to include a variable data-reuse factor. By utilizing the information provided by the data-dependent step size, we propose an assignment rule that automatically adjust the number of data reuses. A particular reduced-complexity implementation of the proposed algorithm is also considered in order to reduce the dimensions of the matrix inversions involved in the computation of update. Simulations show that a significant reduction in the overall complexity can be obtained with the algorithm as compared with the conventional SM-AP algorithm. In addition, the proposed algorithm retains the fast convergence of the conventional SM-AP algorithm, and the low steady-state error of the SM-NLMS algorithm

An efficient version of the affine projection (AP) algorithm, which is called FXAP-AC throughout the paper, is presented. This algorithm uses the filtered-x structure instead of the modified structure which is required for the implementation of the AP algorithm when the desired signal is not available, for instance in active noise control (ANC) applications. The conventional AP algorithm for ANC, which is based on the modified structure (MFXAP), provides good performance. However the filtered-x structure is advisable for practical cases since it achieves a meaningful computational saving avoiding the additional filtering needed by the modified structure without significantly affect the performance in practice. In this paper, an efficient computation of coefficient update is developed for the FXAP resulting in the FXAP-AC. This low-cost strategy already proposed in the conventional AP algorithm can be suitably combined with others previously reported to achieve very fast and robust FXAP algorithms. Experimental results validate the use of the proposed algorithm for practical applications

We present a practical approach for implementing the projected tetrahedra (PT) algorithm for interactive volume rendering of unstructured data using programmable graphics cards. Unlike similar works reported earlier, our method employs two fragment shaders, one for computing the tetrahedra projections and another for rendering the elements. We achieve interactive rates by storing the model in texture memory and avoiding redundant projections of implementations using vertex shaders. Our algorithm is capable of rendering over 2.0 M Tet/s on current graphics hardware, making it competitive with recent ray-casting approaches, while occupying a substantially smaller memory footprint

Bell Laboratories space-time (BLATS) wireless systems are multiple antenna communication schemes that can achieve very high spectral efficiencies in scattering environment with no increase in bandwidth or transmitted power. In this paper we propose an adaptive algorithm for detection in V-BLAST systems based on affine projection algorithm. The proposed technique can improve convergence speed compared to least mean-squares (LMS) with much reduced computational cost compared to recursive least squares (RLS). We present comparison of computational complexities of LMS, RLS, and APA-based detection algorithms. Simulation results illustrate the performance of the proposed algorithm

A novel fast algorithm of polarimetric image simulation for SAR observation over comprehensive terrain scene is developed based on the mapping and projection principles. It incorporates penetrable and impenetrable objects, volumetric and surface scatterers in the imaging space with the extinction, attenuation, shadowing and multiple scattering effects. Scattering of the vegetation canopy is modeled as a layer of random non-spherical particles by using the vector radiative transfer model. Scattering from the ground surface and building objects is calculated by using the IEM rough surface model. As an example, the polarimetric SAR images for a virtual terrain scene, composed by tree canopies, farmland, buildings, rough land surface, hills and rivers, are simulated.
