In this paper, we present a forgetting factor scheme for variable step-size affine projection algorithms (APA). The proposed scheme uses a forgetting processed input matrix as the projection matrix of pseudo-inverse to estimate weight deviation. This method introduces time significances into the projection matrix, whereupon the evaluated error has been assigned some time characteristics and accordingly, it is closer to the real error's behavior than that uses uniform time significances. It is shown that the proposed algorithm is superior in terms of convergence and misadjustment compared to existing algorithms. According to tremendous independent trials with various signals and parameters, the robustness and adaptation stability of the proposed algorithm are also demonstrated. As a special case, a variable step size NLMS algorithm with forgetting factor is also presented in this paper

The filtered-X affine projection (AP) algorithm is applied for active control of the tonal noises generated by periodic noise sources like rotating machines. The convergence analysis of a complex filtered-X (CFX) AP algorithm using multi-reference signals is then investigated. Next, computer simulation is presented to show that the CFX AP algorithm yields faster convergence than the CFX LMS algorithm.

Display and visualization of high dimensional data are typically performed with a well-chosen linear projection of the data or by displaying many linear projections to form an animation. This study presents an evolutionary algorithm for producing nonlinear projections of high dimensional data with cues, in the drawing of the projection, as to the types of distortions introduced. Such projections can provide drawings closer to the true high dimensional distances of the displayed data than any single linear drawing. This permits a researcher to view a good analog to a scatter plot for high dimensional data. The system is demonstrated on a synthetic four dimensional fitness landscape and on distance data derived from RNA folds. Because fitness landscapes often have more dimensions than can be easily visualized it is difficult to gain an intuitive understanding of a fitness landscape. The nonlinear projection algorithm is applied to an abstraction of the fitness landscape called a fitness web. Fitness webs can be used to display the relative quality of optima, the frequency with which they were found by different evolutionary runs, or other factors of interest. In addition to displaying the relative position of optima in a fitness landscape, a graph of the fitness function along the edges a fitness web displays important slices of the fitness landscape. Called fitness morphs these plots can provide intuition about the fitness landscapes as well as direction for subsequent evolutionary searches. The second demonstration of the nonlinear projection algorithm is to data generated from an ad hoc metric on RNA folds. The algorithm yields drawings that permit a researcher to correctly distinguish two different types of folds for iron response elements.

In this paper, we investigate the performance of constrained adaptive algorithms in a beamforming system that is also responsible for the estimation of the angle-of-arrival (AOA) of a moving source. The merits of a number of linearly constrained adaptive algorithms are verified in an assumed far-field condition: the constrained least mean square (CLMS) algorithm, the constrained affine projection algorithm (CAPA), the constrained conjugate gradient (CCG) algorithm, and the constrained recursive least square (CRLS) algorithm. In order to have a more suitable scenario for the simulations, a fixed AOA estimation method is used and a moving target model is proposed and tested in our experiments.

For discrete-time linear systems with inputs constraints, we characterize the generalized stability region and give an algorithm to find the facet of this region. We show that there exists a finite horizon such that the infinite horizon constrained LQR problem can turn to a finite horizon constrained LQR problem and give an upper bound of this horizon for any given initial state. We also give an upper bound of this finite horizon for all initial states inside the stability region.

An analytical form of the instantaneous frequency law (IFL) is very important when the physical parameters have to be evaluated from the time-frequency content of a signal. Generally, the analyzed signals are composed of several time-frequency components characterized by various nonlinear IFL. To deal with such signals, we propose a new method based on the warping operators (WO) and on the complex time distribution (CTD). Using parallel structures composed of several WO, some time-frequency components of the analyzed signal are linearized. This linearization is highlighted by using the CTD which considerably reduces the artefacts due to the complexity of the analyzed signal. This leads to an accurate estimation process, illustrated and justified by numerical and real examples.

This paper proposes a new algorithm, which uses an optimal step size (OSS) weight adjustment scheme. This strategy leads to a better convergence rate and misadjustment in environments with sudden changes of parameters and for colored input data. The computational complexity is comparable with the well known RLS. The performance of the novel approach is verified by simulations under system identification scenario and compared with that of the NLMS and RLS algorithms. The strategy uses averaged values of the correlation matrix and the cross-correlation vector. Experimental results for car interior echo cancelation are presented including analysis of convergence rate and misadjustment

The problem of dynamic errors-in-variable identification is studied in this paper. We investigate asymptotic convergence properties of the previous bias-eliminating algorithms. We first derive an error dynamic equation for the bias-eliminating parameter estimates. We then show that the asymptotic convergence of the bias-eliminating algorithms is basically determined by the eigenvalue of the largest magnitude of a system matrix in the estimation error dynamic equation. Moreover, the bias-eliminating algorithms possess desired convergence when all the eigenvalues of the system matrix in the estimation error dynamic equation fall strictly inside the unit circle. Given possible divergence of the iterationtype bias-eliminating algorithms under very low SNR (Signal-to-noise ratio) values at the system input and output, we re-formulate the bias-elimination problem as a minimization problem associated with a concentrated loss function and develop a variable projection algorithm to efficiently solve the resulting minimization problem. Finally, we illustrate and verify the theoretical results through stochastic simulations.
