The paper discusses how the asymmetrical situation during single-phase autoreclosure influences the protection security and line loadability. First, we analyze the phase current displacement and earth current in single-phase and three-phase tripped conditions and their dependence on system impedance parameters. We then show the effects on the conventional distance protection algorithm and give worst case estimates for the reduction of measured impedance in asymmetrical cases. Simulations using PSCAD and a Digital Twin of Siemens distance relays are presented to give a good assessment of relay behavior and protection security. Lastly, we discuss possible solutions like reduced zone-reach of phase-to-earth loops and use of reactance method.

The concurrent deployment of PMUs and fast communications has facilitated the development of new protection strategies to meet the demands of the modern power grid. A recent paper introduced a new voltage-based protection algorithm that uses active power differential and sensitivity analysis (APdSA) to detect short circuit faults. The algorithm is applied for the protection of active distribution networks and microgrids. This paper explores the suitability of the APdSA to a high voltage (HV) network model comprising transmission lines and transformers. It is shown that a single APdSA-based relay can provide integrated but selective protection of a busbar and all transformers and feeders connected to it. The APdSA algorithm is differential in principle but delays due to PMU reporting and communication latencies make this algorithm suitable as backup protection for the protection zone integrating all the components terminating at a busbar, including the busbar itself.

An algorithm for Detection of Fault, Islanding, and Power Swings in DG-Equipped Radial Distribution Networks

The algorithm proposed in this article is used for the detection of faults, islanding, and power swings generated within radial distribution systems either equipped or not equipped with distributed generation (DG). The algorithm benefits from the increasing numbers of phasor measurement units that are currently being deployed within modern-day electrical power networks. The algorithm computes three main indices used in the detection process based on the positive sequence measurements. Also, the algorithm has the ability to identify faults of high severity levels and send warning signals to the neighboring regions preventing possible maloperations and initiating emergency procedures. A modified IEEE 34-bus system that is equipped with DG is used for testing and validation of the algorithm employing MATLAB Simulink software packages. The proposed algorithm proved its reliability and robustness in operation even for severe faults and islanding cases.

It is meaningful to import protection modeling and simulation into power system simulation for analyzing dynamic operation or cascaded operation of protection when there is a disturbance in power system. Based on the former researches of protection modeling method and protection simulation system, an application of the protection modeling and simulation mentioned above in transformer inrush eliminating algorithm research is explicated for proving the feasibility and validity of them in novel protection algorithm research in this short paper.

The overhead transmission line protection scheme for the voltage-source converter-based HVDC grids

The fast DC line protection technology is one of the main challenges to high-voltage direct current (HVDC) grids. Based on the Zhangbei HVDC grid project, this paper proposes a non-unit overhead transmission line protection scheme for bipolar voltage-source converter-based HVDC grids equipped with DC circuit breakers. The voltage gradient is used to detect faults rapidly and start the protection algorithm, and the voltage derivative criterion is adopted to discriminate the internal faults from the external ones. Two kinds of faulty pole identification methods are proposed based on the propagation characteristics between the line- and zero-mode voltages, ensuring the selectivity of the protection. The Zhangbei HVDC grid model is built in power systems computer-aided design/electromagnetic transients including DC and the performance of the proposed protection scheme is verified by simulation results of various fault conditions.

In terms of the evaluation problems about individual privacy defense situation of cyberspace, an evaluation method for individual privacy security defense situation based on convolutional neural network is proposed in this thesis; firstly, the state of situation factor at different times in the individual privacy defense system is subject to fuzzy and probabilistic processing based on Bayesian algorithm, to build up situation awareness and situation estimation model and then input the initial condition probability, state transition probability and observation data into the model; secondly, the convolutional neural network is introduced to recognize and evaluate the Bayesian algorithm model mentioned above, improving the accuracy of global restriction protection algorithm for individual privacy features; finally, simulation experiment is carried out to verify the performance advantages of modeling of the algorithm mentioned above.

Survivability is the key topic in the networks. This paper studies the shared-protection based on SRLG, and presents two algorithms. The effectiveness of the proposed algorithms is demonstrated by simulation. Compared with other algorithms;the two algorithms can reduce the blocking probability and improve network performance greatly.

The overcurrent protection on the traditional distribution system uses local measurements and settings as a basis for decision-making. However, connection of multiple distributed generators with different short-circuit characteristics makes the local measurements unpredictable, leading to possible loss of protection coordination. In order to solve this problem, this study proposes an algorithm that achieves its protection function through load flow and sensitivity calculations based on voltage measurements. The algorithm is built on a modelling approach that splits the distribution network into a series of overlapping protection zones. The overlapping feature is realised logically through peer-to-peer communications between intelligent agents located in adjacent zones. A sensitivity-based electrical signature was identified that is generated when a fault occurs within a zone. Simulation results show that the proposed protection algorithm is able to identify the zone in which the fault has occurred and the specific faulted node or line section in that zone. The fault current contributions, or no contributions, of the distributed generators (DGs) do not impact the operation of this algorithm.

D-q Equivalent Circuit-based protection algorithm for a Doubly-fed Induction Generator in the Time Domain

Most modern wind turbines employ a doubly-fed induction generator (DFIG) system due to its many advantages, such as variable speed operation, relatively high efficiency, and small converter size. The DFIG system uses a wound rotor induction machine so that the magnetizing current of the generator can be fed from both the stator and the rotor. We propose a protection algorithm for a DFIG based on a d-q equivalent circuit in the time domain. In the DFIG, the voltages and currents of the rotor side and the stator side are available. The proposed algorithm estimates the instantaneous induced voltages of magnetizing inductance using those voltages and currents from both the stator and the rotor sides. If the difference between the two estimated induced voltages exceeds the threshold, the proposed algorithm detects an internal fault. The performance of the proposed algorithm is verified under various operating and fault conditions using a PSCAD/EMTDC simulator.
