A pseudo adaptive routing algorithm for high-performance e-RiCoBiT-1 (enhanced ring connected binary tree) topology

Network on Chip (NoC) is now a top contender for connecting various modules in the chip. Numerous topologies, such as the torus and 2D mesh, have been in use for a very long time. Other topologies, such as the fat tree and polygon, were also developed. One of the emerging topologies, Ring Connected Binary Tree (RiCoBiT), has high-performance characteristics (maximum and average hop counts) and nearly identical area parameters (number of wire segments and wire length). The absence of an adaptive routing mechanism in this system is its main constraint. We provide a novel RiCoBiT adaptive routing method in this paper. We conducted simulation research to evaluate the method’s performance while accounting for all the configurations, including 1:1, 1:N, N:1, and M:N (from source to destination). The results show that the algorithm performs well in terms of response time for all configurations, even when the node fails. Furthermore, we verified the algorithm’s deadlock-free condition in each case using simulation. As a result, the suggested adaptive routing strategy for RiCoBiT may provide a useful way to achieve successful communication in NoCs. © The Author(s), under exclusive licence to Bharati Vidyapeeth's Institute of Computer Applications and Management 2024.
