Li-ion batteries have become increasingly important in several engineering fields of technology. The batteries play a crucial role, for example, in renewable energy applications in which battery storages are used to balance the power fluctuations caused by continuously varying weather conditions. Another good example is electric vehicles whose operation is most often dependent on Li-ion batteries. The ever-increasing applications of Li-ion batteries have set new challenges in bat- tery analysis. In order to know when the battery must be replaced and in which application it might still be utilized, knowing the age of the battery is crucial. The battery state of health (SoH) is used to estimate the aging and degradation of the battery. The SoH can be estimated by measuring the battery internal impedance since it is highly dependent on the aging processes. Studying the battery aging is time-consuming because of the slow aging mechanisms and charging or discharging the battery to the desired operating state. This thesis studies methods for emulating the battery aging in real time using power-hardware- in-the-loop environment. The methods make it possible to analyze the SoH of Li-ion batteries within a short time without utilizing the actual aging process. This thesis presents the modeling of Li-ion battery impedance and the implementa- tion of battery emulation. The battery impedance model parameters are extracted from real data using a complex nonlinear least squares algorithm. Battery aging models are used to vary the battery SoH in real time. The operation of the em- ulation setup is verified by impedance measurements using wideband-identification techniques.

818 W Yb-doped amplifier with <7 GHz linewidth based on pseudo-random phase modulation in polarization-maintained all-fiber configuration

We present a polarization-maintained (PM), narrow-linewidth, ytterbium (Yb)-doped all-fiber amplifier with the result of continuous-wave 818 W, 85.2% slope efficiency, single-mode beam quality and a 13 dB polarization extinction ratio. It is based on 6.6 GHz pseudo-random binary sequence (PRBS) phase modulation (<7 GHz full width half maximum (FWIIM) laser linewidth) in a simple, three-staged master oscillator power amplifier configuration. The result demonstrates the highest output power per linewidth ratio in the kW regime with a conventional PM 20/400 mu m Yb-doped fiber amplifier. Further studies including the optimization of PRBS parameters and filtered PRBS phase modulation using a low-pass filter will enable <10 GHz, >kW PM high-power fiber lasers in the near future.

Comprehensive two-dimensional gas chromatography with pattern modulation

Comprehensive two-dimensional gas chromatography (GCx GC) modulators normally transfer primary column effluent to the head of the secondary column as a series of sharp pulses. Such pulses are produced with time-varying temperature gradients in thermal modulation or with time-varying flow patterns in flow modulation. Thermal modulators produce narrow peaks at optimal flow rates, but require large amounts of consumables or a highly engineered heating/cooling system. Flow modulators involve simpler hardware and no additional consumables. However, flow modulators require a large increase in secondary column flow or transfer only a small portion of the primary effluent to the secondary column. This study examines a new method of producing GCx GC separations with a flow modulator. Instead of injecting narrow pulses, the modulator transfers primary effluent to the secondary column in the form of an intricate injection pattern. The detector signal is deconvoluted and converted to a two-dimensional chromatogram. The high duty cycle of the technique (>50%) leads to deconvoluted peaks with twenty times greater intensity than those produced by conventional modulation with a Deans switch modulator. Pattern modulation can be produced without requiring elevated carrier flows. This paper describes the implementation of a 4-level pulse-amplitude-modulation (4-PAM) receiver consisting of a 6-bit time-interleaved successive-approximation analog-to-digital converter (TI-SAR ADC), followed by a fully digital speculative 2-tap decision-feedback equalizer (DFE) operating at one-fourth of the modulation rate. The receiver, implemented in an experimental chip fabricated in 32nm SOI CMOS, is designed to recover data at 56 Gb/s over a channel with an attenuation of 11 dB at 14 GHz. The power consumption of the receiver is 202.7mW at a supply of 1.2V, achieving an overall energy efficiency of 3.62 pJ/b. The DFE along with area-optimized register arrays and memory-control buffers occupies an area of 0.154 x 0.169mm(2). Experimental results demonstrating a BER<10(-8) are obtained using a (2(7)-1)-bit pseudo-random binary sequence (PRBS-7).

This paper describes a fully-integrated 77-GHz ultra-wideband pseudo-random noise (PRN) radar transceiver in a Silicon-Germanium technology. The transceiver is equipped with a programmable pseudo-random binary sequence (PRBS) generator, which is realized in a current-mode logic topology and can be operated with a clock rate of up to 4.25 GHz to enable a range resolution of 3.5 cm. The signal generation unit is simplified by including a frequency multiplier to create a 76.5-GHz carrier signal from a single 4.25-GHz input, that is also used as a clock for the PRBS generator. The transceiver achieves a phase noise of -105.3 dBc/Hz at 1-MHz offset frequency, a transmit output power of 6.2 dBm, a receive gain of 24 dB and an input-referred 1-dB compression point of -14 dBm. Track&hold circuits included in the receive path allow the use of a sub-sampling technique to reduce the IF data rate down to 1 MHz. Radar measurements with two PRN transceivers with different primitive polynomials were done concurrently to show a fundamental function of the programmable PRBS generator. Radar measurements with the PRN and the frequency-modulated continuous-wave (FMCW) principles show comparable results and the PRN radar proves to be a real alternative to the FMCW radar.

This paper describes a fully-integrated 77-GHz distant-selective pseudo-random noise coded Doppler radar transceiver in a Silicon-Germanium technology. The transceiver is capable of measuring a vibration or a velocity of a target at a specified distance, which is programmable and can be configured very precisely in the transceiver, and suppressing all other targets elsewhere. It is equipped with two pseudo-random binary sequence (PRBS) generators, which are implemented by using 12-stage linear-feedback shift registers (LFSRs) with a programmable primitive polynomial and can generate various maximum-length sequences to enable a high dynamic range. The LFSRs are realized in a Galois configuration and with current-mode logic gates and can thus be operated with a clock rate of up to 4.25 GHz to enable a range resolution of 3.5 cm. A single external signal source is used both as a clock for the PRBS generators and as an input signal for the frequency multiplier, which creates a carrier signal with a frequency of 76.5 GHz. Radar measurements with static as well as vibrating targets were done to show the applicability of the developed system.

Determination of the linear frequency response of single pipelines using persistent transient excitation: a numerical investigation

The linear frequency response of a fluid-filled pipeline extracted by fluid transient waves can be used to detect leaks in pipelines. This research conducts numerical analysis on how to accurately determine the linear frequency response diagram (FRD) of single pipelines using persistent transient pressure signals. Two types of persistent signals, the maximum-length binary sequence and the inverse-repeat sequence (IRS), are compared in terms of the accuracy in estimating the linear response of a pipeline at resonant frequencies. The IRS is found to be more appropriate for identifying the linear portion of the FRD of a pipeline, since its antisymmetric property can supress part of the nonlinear response. Numerical simulations are conducted to verify the findings.

Some Notes on Generalized Cyclotomic sequences of Length pq

We review the constructions of two main kinds of generalized cyclotomic binary sequences with length pq （the product with two distinct primes）. One is the White-generalized cyclotomic sequences, the other is the Ding-Helleseth（DH, for short）-generalized cyclotomic sequences. We present some new pseudo-random properties of DH-generalized cyclotomic sequences using the theory of character sums instead of the theory of cyclotomy, which is a conventional method for investigating generalized cyclotomic sequences.

This paper presents the definition of perfect punctured binary sequence pair and the combinatorial admissible conditions for searching the perfect punctured binary sequence pairs and proves that all of the pseudo-random binary sequences satisfy these conditions. Computer calculation verifies that the pseudo-random binary sequences with length up to N=127 can be easily turned into perfect punctured binary sequence pairs.

Electrically conducting organic polymers are widely used as a means of gas, odour or aroma analysis using multi-element array techniques coupled with direct current (d.c.) interrogation techniques. Recently, it has been established that the use of alternating current (a.c.) interrogation gives rise to improved performance. In addition, the need to use multi-element arrays is much reduced since a single sensor can be interrogated at a wide range of frequencies. This paper describes the use of pseudo-random binary sequences (PRBS) as interrogation signals for semi-conducting organic polymer gas sensors. Preliminary experiments have been conducted upon volatile vapours and results are presented herein. (C) 1998 Elsevier Science S.A. All rights reserved.
