This paper extends previous UWB multiple access (MA) performance characterization by combining pseudorandomly coded, Time Hopped pulse position modulation (TH-PPM) with 4-Ary Biorthogonal communication signaling, referred to here as TH-BPPM MA signaling. Communication performance for the hybrid TH-BPPM technique is first validated for a single user operating over an AWGN channel. Single user results are then extended and MA performance characterized for both synchronous and asynchronous networks containing up to 15 users. In both cases, the proposed 4-Ary TH-BPPM technique with Gold coding achieves nearly identical performance as previously demonstrated MA methods employing binary TH-PPM. A key benefit afforded by the 4-Ary TH-BPPM technique, given fixed average power and symbol length constraints, is a doubling of the effective data rate while achieving identical bit error rate performance.

We present analytical results on the average bit error probability (ABEP) of an optically pre-amplified pulse-position-modulation (PPM) receiver that operates under fading and pointing errors. The analytical description enables the efficient calculation of the ABEP in Malaga-M, gamma - gamma and negative-exponential fading for a wide range of modulation orders and noise modes. As expected, a significant power budget gain is initially obtained by increasing the PPM modulation order, however a further improvement requires the optimization of the received beam waist. Finally, the noise modes that enter the receiver negatively affect its operation irrespective of fading and pointing errors.

In this paper, we study the performance of nonorthogonal pulse position modulation (NPPM) for ultra-wideband (UWB) communication. Error probability and performance bounds are derived for a multi-user environment. It is shown that with proper selection of the pulse waveform and modulation index, NPPM can achieve better performance than orthogonal PPM with the same throughput.

In OCDMA systems, pulse position modulation (PPM) and multi-code modulation (MCM) have been proven as efficient methods for respectively mitigating multiple access interference (MAI) and dispersion. In this paper, we propose to combine PPM and MCM to create a novel modulation scheme, multi-code pulse position modulation (MCPPM). We then theoretically analyze the performance of the 2-D OCDMA system using MCPPM over a linear dispersive channel, while taking into account the negative impact of MAI, optical-beating interference (OBI), and receiver noise. It is seen that the use of MCPPM can simultaneously relax the effects of MAI, OBI, and dispersion. As a result, in comparison to the conventional systems using PPM and MCM, the one using MCPPM can support a higher user bit rate and a larger number of users. Also, a lower transmitted power can be achieved.

NASA is developing technology for 64-ary PPM using relatively large PPM time slots (10 ns) and relatively simple electronic-based receiver logic. In this paper we describe photonics-based receiver options for the case of much higher data rates and inherently shorter decision times. The receivers take the form of virtual (array or quadrant) arrays with associated comparison tests. Previously we explored this concept for 4-ary and 16-ary PPM at data rates of up to 10 Gb/s. The lessons learned are applied to the case of 64-ary PPM at 1.25 Gb/s. Various receiver designs are compared, and the optimum design, based on virtual arrays, is evaluated using numerical simulations.

To prolong the lifespan of devices with a limited power budget, efficient modulation schemes, such as pulse position modulation (PPM), can be employed. High-order differential pulse position modulation (DPPM), which can be efficiently demodulated using an event timer, presents advantages over other PPM modulation methods because it can provide higher data rates and does not require synchronization. This research aims to demonstrate data transmission using high-order DPPM signal in a laboratory environment and measure bit error ratio (BER) for position widths 50-200 ps. In the theoretical part, an assessment of data transmission rate dependence from the position count and position width of DPPM signal with guard time is presented. Moreover, a theoretical comparison in terms of power efficiency and maximum data rate with other types of PPM, such as transmitted reference pulse-positionmodulation (TR-PPM), is made. In the experimental part, the performance measurements of DPPM communication system consisting of arbitrary waveform generator (AWG) as DPPM transmitter and Eventech A033-ET/USB event timer as digital-to-time converter (DTC) of DPPM receiver are presented.

This paper introduces the use of photon-added squeezed states (PASSs) for quantum pulse position modulation (QPPM). It is shown that the use of PASSs in QPPM communication systems can reduce the symbol error probability (SEP) with respect to the use of different classes of quantum states with the same energy, including squeezed states and photon-added coherent states. The impact of thermal noise and phase diffusion on the SEP is also evaluated. The findings of this paper show the utility of PASSs in quantum communication systems.

In this paper, we have proposed an optical pulse position modulation based on double-circle iteration, targeting at the next generation of high speed optical metropolitan area networks. The focuse of this paper lies on the performance of spectral efficiency, the bit error rate and chromatic dispersion. The proposed modulation format is also compared to on-off-keying(OOK) and 4-level pulse-amplitude modulation(PAM4). The results show a clear advantage of bit error rate and dispersion tolerance, thus it can achieve longer fiber delivery distance.
