A pulse sensor based on single-electrode triboelectric nanogenerator is reported in this work. The device has simple device structure: a PET film with ITO coating layer stacking with a thin polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) film with a trench structure. The surface of PDMS film is negatively charged through triboelectric effect with the acrylic mould. The typical human pulse presenting the radial artery pressure wave is successfully extracted from the output pulse signal. The incident wave and two reflected waves are clearly shown in the output signal. The radial artery augmentation index Alr and the time difference between two peaks ATDvp used to diagnose arterial stiffness are gained and they are consistent with the typical medical value. The correlation between the structure parameters and the output signal is studied and the optimal geometry is obtained. The stability of the device is verified in a cycling test after 2500 press-and-release operations. The simple device structure is very convenient for its integration into a wearable electronic device. The pulse sensor in this report may find application in medical monitoring and wearable electronic products in the future. (C) 2018 Published by Elsevier B.V.

We design and fabricate a facile, portable and scalable radial artery pulse sensor, then successfully employ it into the analysis of personalized health status. The sensing component comes from a stretchable graphene-coated fiber which shows good linearity and sensitivity to the tensile strain. Further combined with the smart structure of the sensor, the precise detection of periodic pulse wave and the wave changes induced by exercise and disease becomes avaiable and repeatable. In particular, the obtained single waveform contains almost all the characteristics the medical analysis requires, from which we can evaluate the cardiovascular risk factors for citizen medicine, home healthcare and disease prevention. High power millimetre wave pulse sensor for W-band

A resistive sensor for high power millimetre wave pulse measurement in a frequency range 78-118 GHz (W-band) has been developed. Two sensing elements mounted on a wide wall of a waveguide were employed to measure pulse propagating in the waveguide with 2.4 x 1.2 mm(2) window size. A finite difference time domain method was applied to engineer the sensor with optimised frequency response. Two groups of sensors were produced and tested experimentally. Dependence of each sensor's sensitivity on frequency was measured and reasonable agreement between the measured and calculated values was obtained, once the finite thickness of upper metal contacts of sensing elements and the air gap between them was taken into account during the calculations. Other important characteristics of the sensor, such as voltage standing wave ratio and dependence of the output signal on pulsed power were measured experimentally as well. The sensor was tested up to 2 kW pulse power.

Flexible piezoresistive pulse sensor using biomimetic PDMS mold replicated negatively from shark skin and PEDOT:PSS thin film

We propose a newly designed and fabricated flexible piezoresistive pulse sensor (FPPS) using a biomimetic PDMS mold replicated negatively from shark skin and PEDOT:PSS thin film. Its feasibility to measure physiological signals from the human body using FPPS was tested. The FPPS consists of a sensor element with PEDOT:PSS film coated on the PDMS substrate and two electrodes with copper tape as a counter electrode almost covering the surface of the sensor element and an Ag paste electrode on the edge of one side of the sensor element. The PDMS substrate was negatively replicated from shark skin as a biomimetic mold, and the PEDOT:PSS sensing film was coated on the replicated PDMS substrate to fabricate the sensor element of the FPPS. The unique geometry of shark skin remarkably affects the decrease of contact resistance by about 700-fold until the pressure range of 500 Pa compared to using PEDOT:PSS film on the planar PDMS substrate. The reason why the contact resistance decreases with increasing pressure is that the conducting points increase in the PEDOT:PSS chains with increasing pressure. In the low pressure range (<0.7 kPa) and high pressure range (0.7 through <(6)over tilde> kPa), the sensitivities were 62.56 kPa(-1) and 8.32 kPa(-1), respectively. For the feasibility test, physiological pulse signals were measured from a human subject's body using the FPPS, the S.I. of 6.73 m/s and R.I. of 64.03% were close to the normal range of S.I. and R.I., which are 5.72 +/- 0.28 m/s and 48.19 +/- 9.51%, respectively. The calculated vascular age, 24.5 years old, was similar to 24.9 years old, the actual age of the subject. (C) 2018 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

The application of information technology has realized the transformation of production methods and people's lifestyles and supported sports development, which is becoming more and more powerful in sports. Because of technological developments, personal endurance athletes, sports teams, and physicians can now track lifting tasks, the volume of work, and biomarkers to maximize efficiency and minimize injuries. Therefore, this paper used its advanced methods and information display technology to optimize aerobics in the presence of artificial intelligence and promote the ecological development of sports. In addition, this research work also took the elective course of aerobics major of Liaoning Normal University in 2019 as an example and adopted bio-pulse sensors as a new teaching method. Besides, this paper used questionnaires, teaching experiments, etc., combined with other course teaching practices and aerobics-related teaching experiments, and evaluated the teaching effect according to the measurement indicators. The experimental results have shown a significant difference in the students' learning attitude in the experimental group and the control group using the bio-pulse sensor. The P values, i.e., the probability values for obtaining the results, were 0.047 and 0.048, all of which were less than 0.05, so they were considered statistically significant. Using bio-pulse sensors to select aerobics courses will give full play to the richness of teaching content and novel teaching methods, which will help stimulate students' interest in learning, stimulate students' enthusiasm for learning, and improve teaching quality.

A non-invasive optical fiber pulse sensor is proposed and experimentally demonstrated. It comprises a simple structure in which a section of thin-core fiber is spliced into another single-mode fiber. And a silicone rubber device is designed to ensure that weak pulse signals are detected. To assess the availability of the optical fiber pulse sensor, a commercial photoplethysmograph is used to measure the pulse of the same subject as a control. The measurement results of the two methods are consistent. The fiber pulse sensor can show a segmented signal in individual pulses, which provides more physiological information. It also possesses the advantages of high sensitivity, simple signal acquisition and processing, easy fabrication, and thus is an ideal candidate for replacing traditional electrical sensor.

In addition to monitoring blood pressure, cholesterol levels, lifestyle habits, and medical history, heart rate also serves as an essential measure in assessing overall health. The heart rate is a crucial indicator of health and is closely related to the functioning of the cardiovascular system. The objective of the study is to develop a prototype that can measure and display the heart rate using a pulse sensor and an Arduino IDE. The heart rate is calculated by analyzing the pulse sensor's reading. In order to detect irregular heart rates, threshold checks are included. If the heart rate exceeds the predetermined threshold value, the LED and buzzer will be activated. If the heart rate is within the normal range, the system will display "GOOD" while "BAD" will be displayed if the rate is not in the allowable range. In order to alert the user and prompt them to take the appropriate action, the LED and buzzer will sound when the reading falls outside of the specified range. The prototype effectively accomplishes its goal of monitoring, displaying, and warning the user in case of an unexpected and possibly harmful spike in heart rate, particularly when engaging in physical activity or exercise.

The ability to perform real-time signal analysis on physiological signal is important in today's technology. This allows physician to monitor their patient's health condition and provide the necessary action immediately. To obtain accurate measurement of this signal, proper signal interface between the patient body and the signal analyzer is crucial. In this work, a microprocessor system interfaced with an ADC and a pulse sensor is implemented in FPGA hardware. An experiment is carried out to analyze the performance of the system by executing real-time data acquisition system on various test data. From the experiment results, the system is able to achieve good results as compared to the direct measurement using oscilloscope. Based on the power analysis results, the proposed system has total power dissipation around 200.63 mW to 201.17 mW.

pulse rate variability (PRV) is a small change in the heart beat cycle that can be obtained from the pulse signal. PRV has important application value in clinical diagnosis, disease monitoring, and prevention. PRV can be conveniently extracted from the fingertip pulse signal obtained by a photoplethysmography (PPG) pulse sensor. However, this method requires clamping the fingertip during the measurement, which is uncomfortable for the monitored person and is not conducive to continuous PRV detection in family monitoring or in a specific environment, such as driving. Thus, in this paper, we propose a pulse sensor with a soft polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF) piezoelectric film. The non-invasive pulse signals can be collected by lightly pressing the fingertip on the sensor. In the experiment, two PVDF pulse sensors were used to collect the pulse waves from the left wrist and left forefinger;simultaneously, an infrared PPG pulse sensor measures the pulse wave of the right forefinger. The pulse waves measured by the three methods were further filtered to extract PRV signals and compare the differences. The results show that the PRV signal obtained by the PVDF sensor pressing measurement method has good consistency with the PRV signal obtained by PPG measurement, and the PVDF pulse sensor can be conveniently applied in wearable devices and portable medical devices to obtain the PRV.

pulse pressure measurement, as one of the major home health monitoring technologies, is of great significance for the assessment of blood pressure and recognition of lung cancer. Here we propose and experimentally demonstrate a noninvasive optical fiber pulse sensor, which comprises a simple structure in which a section of thin-core fiber is spliced into another single-mode fiber. Responses of fiber pulse sensor to the simulated pulsations are tested by using a piezoelectric transducer. And a silicone rubber device is designed to ensure that weak pulse signals are detected. The sensors with an inserted thin-core fiber length of 2-3 mm can display remarkable response to human pulse pressure. The signal waveforms detected are almost unaffected by the subject's movement. It also possesses the advantages of high sensitivity, simple signal acquisition and processing, easy fabrication, and thus is an ideal candidate for replacing traditional electrical sensor.
