After years of investigations, the development of diode-laser pumped glass amplifiers for the POLARIS-laser system at the Friedrich-Schiller University of Jena reached the 10-J level of daily operation. pulses originating from a commercial fs-titanium:sapphire oscillator are amplified in the first stage Al, stretched to a ns-pulse duration in a 4-pass grating stretcher and further amplified in three consecutive stages A2 to A4. At the end of the chain they are re-compressed by a tiled grating compressor to a pulse duration of less than 170 fs (FWHM). In this presentation we summarize efforts made in recent years in order to provide a multi-terawatt laser output power.

The generation of ultra-short pulses is typically governed by the interplay of dispersion and nonlinearity. Ultrashort pulses have high peak-powers which cause nonlinearities. In particular, nonlinearity can cause wave- breaking of ultra-short pulses. This effect imposes limitations on the generation and amplification of femtosecond laser pulses. Chirping of the pulses reduces the peak-power during amplification, and thus, increases the onset of nonlinearities. This paper reports on an analysis of nonlinear CPA-systems. It is shown that the nonlinear effect of self-phase modulation (SPM), acquired during amplification of the stretched pulse, can be compensated by positive dispersion. In particular, the method is important for systems employing static stretching and compressing elements, e.g. chirped volume Bragg-gratings.

Self-pinching of the photon fluence of millijoule laser pulses propagating inside filaments is discussed. This effect causes local contraction of the beam diameter and is proven to lead to axial pulse self-compression.

We report the first generation of three-cycle, 8 fs, 125 mJ optical pulses in a noncollinear optical parametric chirped-pulse amplifier (NOPCPA) operating at 805 nm central wavelength. Distance measurement using an ultrasonic wave is suitable for environment recognition in autonomous mobile robots. Ultrasonic distance measurement with the pulse-echo method is based on determining the time-of-flight (TOF) of the reflected echoes. The pulse-echo method with pulse compression, the cross-correlation method, can improve the distance resolution and the signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) of the reflected echo. However, cross correlation of the cross-correlation method requires the high-cost digital signal processing. A sensor signal processing method of cross correlation using a delta-sigma modulated single-bit digital signal has been proposed. Cross correlation by single-bit signal processing reduces the calculation cost of cross correlation. Furthermore, cross correlation by single-bit signal processing improves the time resolution of digital signal processing. In this paper, the distance resolution of cross correlation by single-bit signal processing is evaluated by computer simulations and experiments of ultrasonic distance measurement. Distance measurement from the high-time-resolution cross-correlation function obtained by single-bit signal processing realized high distance resolution from experimental results, despite the low calculation costs.

Most of the modern high-current high-voltage pulsed power generators require several stages of pulse conditioning (pulse forming) to convert the multi-microsecond pulses of the Marx generator output to the 40-300 ns pulse required by a number of applications including x-ray radiography, pulsed high current linear accelerators, Z-pinch, isentropic compression (ICE), and inertial fusion energy (IFE) drivers. This makes the devices large, cumbersome to operate, and expensive. Sandia, in collaboration with a number of other institutions, is developing a new paradigm in pulsed power technology; the linear transformer driver (LTD) technology. This technological approach can provide very compact devices that can deliver very fast high current and high voltage pulses. The output pulse rise time and width can be easily tailored to the specific application needs. Trains of a large number of high current pulses can be produced with variable inter-pulse separation from nanoseconds to milliseconds. Most importantly, these devices can be rep-rated to frequencies only limited by the capacitor specifications (usually is 10 Hz). Their footprint as compared with current day pulsed power accelerators is considerably smaller since LTD do not require large oil and de-ionized water tanks. This makes them ideally fit for applications that require portability. In the present paper we present Sandia Laboratory's broad spectrum of developmental effort to design construct and extensively validate the LTD pulsed power technology.

The design of integrated radar and communication systems may be based on sets of polyphase sequences such as Oppermann sequences. In this paper, we derive an analytical expression for the cross-ambiguity function of weighted pulse trains with Oppermann sequences. Further, the auto-ambiguity function is deduced from this as a special case. Numerical examples are provided to illustrate the relationship between sequence parameters and performance characteristics.

In this paper, we consider properties of the auto-ambiguity and cross-ambiguity functions of weighted pulse trains with Oppermann sequences. Several properties are examined and proved which in turn allows for reducing the design space for optimization of a particular design. The insights gained from these properties are consolidated in a formal framework leading to procedures that can be used for a more structured waveform design. Numerical examples are provided to illustrate the relationship between sequence parameters and performance characteristics.
