For the first time, an ultra-wideband pulse generator is fabricated in GaAs HBT IC technology. The generator includes delay and differential circuits to convert a TTL input into an impulse signal and a Class-C amplifier to increase the pulse amplitude while compressing the pulse width. By adjusting the bias of the Class-C amplifier, the pulse amplitude can be varied linearly between 3.5 V and 11.5 V while maintaining the pulse width at 0.3±0.1 ns. Alternatively, the pulse width can be varied linearly between 0.25 ns and 0.65 ns, while maintaining the pulse amplitude at 10±1 V. Finally, the amplified impulse signal can be shaped into a monocycle signal by an L-C derivative circuit. These results compare well with that of pulse generators fabricated in GaAs HEMT, Si CMOS or Si discrete technologies.

Sandia is actively pursuing the development of new accelerators based on the new technology of the linear transformer driver (LTD). LTD based drivers are currently considered for many applications including X-ray radiography, very high current Z-pinch drivers, and Z-pinch IFE (inertial fusion energy). LTD is a new method for constructing high-current, high-voltage induction pulsed accelerators. The pulse forming capacitors and switches are enclosed inside the accelerating cavity. High currents can be achieved by feeding each cavity core with many capacitors connected in parallel in a circular array. High voltage is obtained by inductively adding the output voltage of many cavities in series. Utilizing the presently available capacitors and switches we can envision building the next generation of fast radiographic and Z-pinch drivers without large Marx generators and voluminous oil-water pulse forming and pulse compression networks. One of the most significant advantages is that the LTD drivers can be rep-rated. The latter makes LTD the driver of choice for Z pinch IFE. Presently we have in rep-rated operation in Sandia a one 0.1-MA, 100-kV LTD cavity. In parallel we are preparing a new LTD laboratory to house our 10, 1-MA, 100-kV LTD cavities recently constructed and received from the HCEI, Tomsk, Russia.

High range resolution can be achieved by various methods in a radar system. Simple pulse systems are narrow band, easiest and least expensive to maintain, but one can achieve only limited resolution. To achieve good range resolution pulse compression technique giving low range sidelobes is employed in radar and sonar. pulse compression is accomplished by employing phase modulation and frequency modulation. Bi-phase coded waveform employs phase modulation techniques. The Barker codes are the only known bi-phase codes with minimum sidelobes. In this paper, linear frequency modulation (LFM) and nonlinear frequency modulation (NLFM) are introduced in the bi-phase coded waveforms and their effect on the sidelobe levels, mainlobe width, Doppler tolerance are studied.

This paper describes a new approach to marine radar design. New IMO regulations allow marine radars to be designed with solid state transmitter power amplifiers using pulse compression waveforms and coherent Doppler processing. This gives a new flexibility and better possibilities to control the transmitter spectrum. The modular system design applies to waveform generation, signal processing and RF hardware.

In this report, we demonstrate a single pass power amplifier for sub-7 fs pulses working at any repetition rate larger than the inverse lifetime of the upper laser level. The output from a Ti:sapphire mode-locked laser is focused into a Ti:sapphire crystal together with CW radiation of a frequency doubled Nd:YVO 4 laser. The amplification crystal is cooled by a liquid nitrogen cryostat to avoid thermal lensing. Two different Ti:sa oscillators are used for seeding. A maximum gain of 3.8 is obtained with 100 fs pulses, currently limited by available pump power. In the amplification of ~8 fs pulses, the original output power of 510 mW is amplified up to 1.4 W, giving a maximum gain of 2.6. The smaller gain with Venteon laser is explained by a reduced overlap between the Ti:sa gain spectrum and the seed laser spectrum. The shortest output pulse is compressed by a home-built chirped-mirror compressor and its pulse width is measured. To the best of our knowledge, this is the highest average power obtained with ~8 fs pulses at this repetition rate range.

The development of RAC devices usually is focused on 2 goals, to minimize the insertion loss and phase deviation of S21(f) from ideal quadratic dependence. For large bandwidth RAC filter, to have the balance between the 2 goals, amplitude weighting technique is needed. One hand it can reduce too high reflectivity at certain frequency so as to control the multiple reflections which will cause phase diviation; and on another hand it can realise a flat passband so to have good compressed pulse shape. To avoid the profile depth etching, we concentrated on methods of weighting on reflecting structures. Comparing different type of reflectors and different methods of weighting their reflectivity, we found that the best results can be obtained using grooves of uniform depth along the structure and weighting by variation of the duty cycle of grooves. For typical down chirp device with B=400 MHz, T=20 us this approach results in the variation of the groove width duty cycle from about 10% to fully 50%.Then the narrowest width is about 220 nm, i.e. very close to the critical dimension of photo lithography(100 nm). Therefore we have used the standard e-beam lithography equipment for precise exposure of the weighted groove array. With this method, BT=8000 RAC filters with total insertion loss 55 dB and RMS phase deviation 15 degrees was developed.

Summary form only given: pulsed power provides efficient and low cost compression of energy in space and time. A five-year upgrade of the 18 MA Z pulsed-power facility was completed in September of 2007. This upgrade has doubled the stored electrical energy of the facility to 22 MJ and has already enabled peak currents of up to 26 MA in some experiments. In particular, the facility design enables current pulse shaping out to drive pulse- lengths of 300 to 600 ns for flyer plate and isentropic compression experiments on the dynamic properties of materials at high pressures. A vigorous high energy density physics program was pursued in parallel with facility and diagnostic commissioning over the last 20 months. Experiments were routinely executed over a broad range of applications including dynamic materials, z-pinch instability physics, x-ray source optimization for soft x-ray and K-shell x-ray sources, and spectroscopic measurements of photo- ionized neon plasmas, and iron opacity. Recent results, demonstrated at facility charging voltages of up to 82 kV, include the re-establishment of a dynamic hohlraum opacity platform at peak currents of nearly 24 MA generating higher electron temperatures and densities than previously, demonstration of peak currents of 26 MA into loads at short (120 ns) and long pulses (300 ns), peak soft x-ray powers of 250 TW produced by a z-pinch, isentropic compression of Ta up to pressures of nearly 4 Mbar, and measurements of the strength of Be at pressures of up to 1 Mbar. Significant advances have also been made in diagnostics. Routine two- frame and two-color radiography using the Z-Beamlet laser with bent crystal imaging at spatial resolutions of 20 Icircfrac14m has been demonstrated. Load currents measurements have been performed close to the load by inferring magnetic pressures from VISAR velocity measurements. Spectroscopy has been used to measure z-pinch implosion and stagnation dynamics in detail. Recent work on new concepts for
