The main goal of ultrasound tomography (UT) is to provide both a high contrast imaging and a multi-parametric imaging. Within the frame of soft-tissue imaging, we focus our application to breast inspection for early stage cancer detection. Conforming with breast anatomy, ANAIS (ANAtomical Imaging and Interventional System) prototype is designed including a semicircular antenna which enables imaging of ductolobular structures sensitive to cancer initiation. The 200-mm diameter half-ring transducer contains 1024 elements with 3-MHz center frequency and 2.25-MHz (-6 dB) bandwidth. Chirp excitation is used to improve contrast with pulse compression method. Performed with a needle hydrophone, calibration studies yield system characteristics such as field distribution or transducer element localization. Taking advantage of a near field reconstruction algorithm, tomographic images of thin wire and of breast anthropomorphic phantom (CIRS) are presented. The low frequency approach and the high density of the ring antenna provide interesting results that, as we expect, may still be enhanced.

In this paper we introduce an approach for solving the state equations of a helical flux compression generators. These state equations are obtained from 2-dimensional filamentary model of helical flux compression generators. Firstly, we derivate the matrix representation of differential equations of the heliacal flux compression generator. Then with selection of the appropriate state vector, the state equations are obtained. Finally the state equations are solved by using an approach, which is based on the dynamic matrix concept. In the author belief, this approach is very useful and straightforward and has not been appeared previously in the open literature.

Summary form only given. The ITU-T Rec. G.711 is widely used for narrowband telephony applications, including PSTN/GSTN and packet-based network applications such as VoIP, and has been used for many decades because of its proven voice quality, ubiquity, and utility. ITU has just established a lossless coding technology for G.711 encoded payloads, ITU-T Rec. G.711.0-Lossless compression of G.711 pulse code modulation. This paper introduces some coding technologies proposed and applied to the G.711.0 codec, such as Plus-Minus zero mapping for the mapped domain linear predictive coding and escaped-Huffman coding combined with adaptive recursive Rice coding for lossless compression of the prediction residual. The proposed and conventional algorithms were implemented and the coding performances of the codec were evaluated using large speech corpus in various conditions in terms of the computational complexity/compression performance trade-off. Since the distribution of the prediction residual signal sometimes does not follow the expected Laplacian PDF model of Rice coding, E-Huffman coding can improve the compression performance for relatively smaller Rice quotients of residual and Recursive Rice coding can improve the compression performance for relatively larger Rice quotients of residual. It is shown that the PM zero mapping improves the compression performance by 0.2% for ?-law input. The E-Huffman coding combined with adaptive recursive Rice coding improves the compression by 0.16% while the complexity was increased by 0.046 WMOPS for the encoder/decoder pair, averaged for all test conditions, compare to the conventional Rice coding scheme. The worst-case complexity was increased by 0.079 WMOPS. Average computational complexity is 1.071 WMOPS for the encoder/decoder pair and the worst-case complexity is 1.667 WMOPS in total.

The OMEGA/OMEGA EP Laser System is being used to study a variety of approaches to direct-drive inertial confinement fusion-the traditional central hot-spot (CHS) approach, fast ignition (FI), and shock ignition (SI). To achieve ignition, CHS requires the highly uniform compression of a solid deuterium-tritium (DT) layered target on a low-adiabat (defined as the ratio of the pressure to the Fermi-degenerate pressure) and with an implosion velocity, v > 3.5 × 10 7 cm/s. A laser-pulse shape with multiple pickets produces this low adiabat. The timing of multiple shocks launched by the pickets and the main laser pulse is optimized in experiments using cone-in-shell geometry. Cryogenic targets imploded with optimally timed, low-adiabat multiple-picket pulses have demonstrated near 1-D compression with an areal density, ρR = 290 mg/cm 2 , at v = 3.1 × 10 7 cm/s. These are by far the highest DT areal densities demonstrated in the laboratory. FI and SI relax energy and uniformity requirements on the compression laser by separating fuel assembly from ignition. Integrated FI experiments have been performed on the OMEGA/OMEGA EP Laser System. A 10-ps, 1-kJ OMEGA EP beam is pointed into the tip of a gold cone inserted into a thick plastic converging and compressing shell. The neutron yield increased by more than a factor of 2 when the OMEGA EP beam was optimally delayed, indicating ~10% conversion efficiency from laser energy to core heating. Shock-ignition experiments, where a shock is launched by a picket at the end of the laser pulse into the compressing capsule, have been performed on low-adiabat warm plastic targets. Both yield and areal density improve significantly when a spike is used at the end of the laser pulse, indicating that energy from the shock is coupled into the compressing target. This talk will discuss these results, compare them to simulations, and identify future work necessary to demonstrate ignition relevance for all these scheme

An amplitude coupling coefficient has been defined to quantify spatiotemporal couplings in ultrashort pulses, which is dimensionless and normalized. The amplitude couplings in ultrashort pulses, such as first-order spatial chirp and angular dispersion caused by angular dispersion elements have been studied by using the defined amplitude coupling coefficient, and corresponding amplitude coupling coefficients have been given analytically. Furthermore, the second-order spatial chirp caused by angular dispersion elements have been studied.

Summary form only given. The paper describes the effects of an output peaking capacitor on the propagation of underwater streamer. A pulsed power modulator using a magnetic compression circuit was employed to generate 20 to 30 kV pulses with 2 microsecond pulse width. A point-to-plane electrode setup with 2 cm gap in tap water was used. A copper line with 0.4 mm tip diameter was used as the discharge electrode, and an aluminum plate was set in water and connected to ground. Underwater streamer propagation was visualized by an intensified charge-coupled display camera with a high-speed gate. An optional output peaking capacitor was connected in parallel to the electrodes to get pulses with different rise-time. Thin and well-distributed channels were observed when the peaking capacitor was used. In contrast, the number of streamer channels was small and each of them was thick and bright when the peaking capacitor was removed from the circuit. It is concluded that the peaking capacitor has a favorable effect on the generation and propagation of the underwater streamer-like discharges.

Wireless sensor nodes typically have limited processing capabilities and are powered by batteries. The amount of energy expended in transmitting a single data bit would be several orders of magnitude higher when compared to the energy needed for a 32 bit computation. Thus, to maximize network lifetime, data transmissions should be minimized without losing vital information. In this paper, a novel adaptive compression scheme using nonlinear estimation theory is proposed for data aggregation. Satisfactory performance of the proposed compression scheme in the presence of noise, distortion, and quantization errors is demonstrated using Lyapunov approach. The proposed scheme is contrasted with existing compression schemes using various metrics applicable to wireless sensor networks such as energy efficiency, distortion and compression ratio. Simulation and hardware experimental results demonstrate almost 50% energy savings with very low distortion (less than 5%) and overhead. By iteratively applying the proposed scheme at the cluster head nodes, higher energy savings are obtained with a tolerable level of distortion.
