Summary form only given. The initial tests of an active high-power X-band microwave switch are planned. The switch is designed to be the key element of either a Resonant Delay Line pulse compression System or a Delay Line Distribution System. The device works at a frequency of 11.4 GHz and is designed to handle peak power levels of up to ~ 500 MW. It employs ultra-fast, electrically-controlled ferroelectric elements that are fabricated from the recently developed BST (M), ver. 3 ceramic, whose intrinsic response time is ~10-30 nsec. In the tests, the switch will be part of an active pulse compressor fed by ~10 MW pulses provided by the X-band Magnicon operated at NRL. The pulse compressor is designed to deliver a power gain of ~10, and thus should be capable of generating up to 100 MW at its output. The results of the tests and related issues will be presented.

Starting from Nonlinear Schrodinger's equation and using the Split-step Fourier Method, we studied the characters of the supercontinuum generation of femtosecond laser pulse propagating in condensed media; many physical factors are included such as the propagation distance, the input pulse peak power, diffraction effect, dispersion effect and the nonlinear effect etc. The results show that, when the femtosecond pulse propagated inside condensed media, the process of supercontinuum generation can be divided into two main stages: the pulse compressed stage, which induced by the self-focus and other third nonlinear effects of the material; and the pulse splited stage, which leaded by the self-phase modulate and the group velocity dispersion of the material. When the femtosecond pulse propagated inside the condensed media with high input peak power, the 3rd- order nonlinear effect of material induced pulse compressed and then the sub-pulses were produced, so that new frequency components were introduced. At the same time, we also studied the spectral distribution of the pulse at different spatial locations; there are new frequencies around the central frequency. At last, some experiments were done to demonstrate the supercontinuum generation.

Effective signal processing technology should be used to improve signal-to-noise ratio in air-coupled ultrasonic testing, because of there is feeble signal and low signal-to-noise ratio. pulse compression of linear frequency modulation could enhance system's signal to noise ratio and distance resolution effectively. Principle of linear frequency modulation pulse compression is introduced, including of designing and accomplishing of matching filter. The relationship between pulse compression parameters and testing result is analyzed. The affect of exciting mode to ultrasonic signal and pulse compression to signal-to-noise ratio are researched by comparing experiment results. Air-coupled ultrasonic C-scan testing system based on pulse compression is accomplished, and the effectiveness of pulse compression method is testified by ultrasonic imaging results.

We first designed two chirp-coded excitation/compression schemes which were applied to ultrasound elasticityimaging in simulation method using Field II. The simulationresults demonstrate that in low echo-signal-to-noise ratio (eSNR)conditions, the performance of chirp-coded pulse for elasticityimaging is much better than the conventional short pulse, andindicate that elastographic signal-to-noise ratio (SNRe) of strainimages for chirp-coded pulse is a function of attenuation,electronic noise, applied strain, pulse length, compression filterand depth. Comparing the effects of two chirp-codedexcitation/compression schemes on strain imaging, wedemonstrate that under the conditions of low eSNR, the firstscheme, the combination of chirp excitation pulse with windowand matched compression filter, is suitable to be used in lowattenuation situations, and the second scheme, the combinationof chirp excitation pulse without window and mismatchedcompression filter, is fit to be used in high attenuation ***, we applied the second chirp-coded scheme to a real-timefreehand ultrasound strain imaging system and phantomexperimental results are consistent with that in simulationmethod.

We report on recent progress in the conception and fabrication of hollow-core photonic crystal fibers. To illustrate their strong potential, experiments dedicated to the delivery and the manipulation of high-power ultrashort pulses are developed. Then, the limitations principally dictated by the nature of guidance of these fibers are highlighted and solutions proposed. Finally, recent works based on particular HC-PCF guiding broad optical transmission bands with relative low-loss are presented and their opportunities discussed.

This paper describes an iterative algorithm for the design of a constant-modulus finite-duration chirp-like signal having a notch in its frequency spectrum. Frequency-notched signals with good pulse compression properties are needed in wide-band radar systems that must avoid radiating into frequency bands assigned to other systems (e.g. communication and navigation systems). The algorithm is computationally efficient and provides explicit control of the notch frequency and notch order.

High resolution range (HRR) profiles show one-dimensional radar images including the electromagnetic scattering phenomena of a target. Thus, they are not only robust to noise, but also easily obtainable in real-time. However, in order to construct a training database for successful radar target identification, a huge number of HRR profiles are needed, because they are highly dependent on the relative angle between the radar and target. In order to alleviate this difficulty, a database construction method based on the scenarios of the target's movement is proposed. The proposed method is able to provide reliable target identification performance even with a small training database.

pulse compression is important for improving range resolution, and the application of neural networks for pulse compression has been well-explored in the past. However, the practical importance of extracting rather weak echoes of targets that are either distant, or have small radar cross-section, appears to have been overlooked. Addressing this issue, neural networks with improved performance are developed in this paper for both Barker and Polyphase codes. We demonstrate that our networks perform better in such practical situations together with better noise tolerance and range resolution.

Summary form only given. Experiments on FRC formation and translation into the interior of a metal shell or liner have been conducted at AFRL. Flux exclusion, collimated light, and interferometer data on magnetized plasma injection will be presented. These are a pre-requisite for FRC compression by liner implosion, experiment progress on which will also be presented. FRC translation, capture, and compression experiments all use primarily axial ~ 2 Tesla guide and mirror fields established inside the liner, using ~ 5 millisecond rise time discharges into an array of pulsed magnet coils surrounding the liner implosion portion of the device. A 12 MA, 4.5 MJ axial discharge drives the liner implosion for compression experiments. The FRC capture experiments use 3 capacitor discharges into a segmented theta coil surrounding the FRC formation region to establish a bias field, accomplish pre-ionization of deuterium gas, and provide the reverse field main theta discharge (~ 1 Megamp) which forms the FRC. This is aided by two cusp field discharges. The guide and mirror fields enable translation of the FRC and its capture in the liner interior region. Diagnostics include pulsed power (current and voltage), magnetic field, field exclusion, He Ne laser interferometry, imaging and spectroscopy, radiography, and both activation and time-of-flight neutron detection. Design features and operating parameters are guided by 2D-MHD simulations.
